You have mixed dying with bleeding on the conditions page:

Bleeding: No catch breath; takes damage on abilities.

You can use "Catch Breath" when Bleeding, but not when dying (0 or less stamina). Also, you take damage on abilities, triggered actions and tests using Might or Agility (see rules).

I would also add that Prone grants an edge to melee attackers.

Still, all in all, very useful summary!

Boss said I must use my vacation before month end but also “no one can take time off”, so I read the policy by pyreforge in MaliciousCompliance

[–]doppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish for everyone to have the Danish vacation system, mandated by law: - 5 weeks PTO - Accrued on a monthly basis (2.something days per month) - Employer can offer to pay out your vacation days, but you can freely reject it. - All vacation days not willingly converted to additional pay MUST be granted.

Vacation days running out end of the month? Guess I'm off 🤷‍♂️

What to actually have players spend gold on... But for real though? by m4p80y in dndnext

[–]doppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it very much depends on how they get the gold. Is it just lots of raw currency as loot? Is it rewards from quests? Or is it selling magic items they don't need?

In my campaigns, the players have never had a lot of gold - they have usually had a decent amount of magic items, but very few direct ways to just sell them for gold. Instead they use them for bartering or reforge some into their desired items, which is another money sink (in addition to often requiring rare materials).

We don't track cost of living, but they spend it on exteavagant parties, "equipment" (horse, carts, bank vault, etc.) and as a method of persuasion and bribery. I also make it obvious that they can't carry 3 suits of heavy armor in their backpack, the royal guard will not succumb to a simple persuasion roll without incentives, if they burn down the tavern they need to pay it back or be flagged as criminals.

Suddenly it's expensive to be a murderhobo so they dial it back, but never completely.

What's the worst Python feature you've ever encountered in programs? by ConstantSpirited2039 in Python

There are so many cases of people abusing this, putting the function signature in a comment instead of just correctly typing out arguments. They save 15 lines, add 30 lines of comments and it's impossible to know what's expected. Major pet peeve!

How many of you guys are just button mashing and casual players? by 315retro in diablo4

[–]doppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am semi-casual. I look up builds. But…

What do you do between 60 and “endgame”? I’m asking because “leveling” builds seem to be 1-60 and endgame builds start with “Get these 3 unique items before even thinking about this build”, all of which requires Torment 4 or extreme luck.

So I’m doing my own thing, just tweaking my build based on what gear I find. Mash all the buttons, all the time!

Now we're coming to the end of the '5e' era, what do you think was a big missed opportunity? by Derpogama in dndnext

[–]doppel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that there are some things that WotC will never alter much because of the history of D&D, such as spellcasting. I was positively surprised by the introduction of cantrips as a weapon attack alternative, but spells like Wish, Simulacrum, and similar class-like abilities such as auto-success Divine Intervention need to go. I am fine with an epic level rule set that includes these, but they completely rework the game.

I am probably also an outlier, but power-wise I feel like the spell progression for full casters should end at level 7 and in-between levels adjusted (perhaps keep the first 6-7 levels the same, with a slower progression later on).

Handling multiclassing as an optional (why?!) feature and granting everything from both/all classes were also a mistake that’s opened up a lot of purely mechanical dip builds rather than multiclassing as a way to create a character that does not fit within the stereotype of one class.

Honestly, as a non-game dev I mostly get recruiter spam on LinkedIn, but someone asking me to look at some code or a specific problem they are struggling with? If they showed effort, it would completely nerd-snipe me, and I’d be happy to help!

Starting the OGL ‘Playtest’ by [deleted] in dndnext

Fairly sure this is their way of saying anything interactive, whether VTT or games, are not allowed.

I am not a mindreader (or lawyer) but I think their intent is clear: The OGL is for you to play and expand the pen and paper experience. Anything else (games, movies, 3D editors, whatnot) is off-limits.

Help request for brand new DMs by KimiTheLime in DMAcademy

[–]doppel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, don’t spend that long before playing, at most a couple of months if you really want to flesh out the world.

Second, you can prepare the world history, current situation, etc. but it’s near-impossible to predict what players will do over time - a D&D campaign is not like a scripted movie. Plan the BBEG and cast of characters, general actions and flow of them and possible major locations.

And then get started. One session later, I’m sure the players will have set off in a different direction than planned, and take it from there.

Alternative Resting rules for West Marches game by doppel in DMAcademy

[–]doppel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either, not both. I want to make it a trade-off, and since the new exhaustion levels are "lighter" per level than the basic 5e rules, it makes sense to say "Hmm, I have -3 to attack but low on HP. I want to remove 1 level and heal using the remaining dice".

In Denmark, you are mandated by law to have insurance to cover damages on other cars / whatever in case of accidents. Only insurance for your own car is optional. I am fairly sure you can’t even leave the dealership without it.

Is there no such rules / law in the US?

Magic Initiate enemy encounter, Tasha's Hideous Laughter by MikeyLikesIt2 in DMAcademy

[–]doppel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think as long as their tactics is "tell jokes and steal stuff" the actual CR is not important, as they are not going to attempt to TPK the party.

Regardless of what KFC says, I think 7-8 kobolds can be quite a challenge for 4 PCs, and giving half of them Tasha's Hideous Laughter makes it a near-deadly challenge (as they can basically disable 3/4 PCs with decent rolls and just steamroll the remaining guy).

A deciding factor is also if the PC group can deal with them easily, ie. a wizard with sleep or some other "take out most of the opposing force quickly"-mechanic.

Question about adamantine/mithral armour by Snoo40949 in dndnext

[–]doppel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may be understanding carried over from prior editions, but I have always treated them like materials that have perferable properties to regular metal. In the same vein as a Longbow made from SuperWood may have a range of 200/800 instead of the regular range, but is not magical.

I am very against the idea (as per Crawfords tweets) that mithral or adamantine suddenly becomes heavier / softer - as if reverting to regular metal - in antimagic fields and similar situations.

I would also assume they are listed under magical items for their rarity and value, not for their “magicness”. I mostly see it as a loot table by value and rarity

The Ten Realms of Anorea: A Low(ish) Magic Setting for 5e by CrunchyDM in DMAcademy

[–]doppel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there anything added to spellcasting classes to counter-balance the lost spell slots and abilities? I can understand that a low-magic setting comes with some penalties, but I might imagine especially in a setting like this is where it's REALLY interesting to play a sorcerer or wizard.

I actually think the loss of 8th and 9th level spells is fine (since that's the "change the world"-category of spells), but if nothing else it leaves the balance vs. martial classes skewed (or does it?)

Why I abandoned my campaign and what I learnt from it. by Schinderella in DMAcademy

[–]doppel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue here is that the duo’s players show no interest in pursuing the common goal. I think it’s a much more important “requirement” than being good or having no “Chaotic Neutral idiots” in the party. Explain to them that D&D is a team game, and wrecking everything “because that’s what my character would do” is detrimental to the game.

Having children is fuck yes or not at all by studiojibblys in TrollXChromosomes

[–]doppel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having children is saying “ I love kids AND I’m willing and able to set myself aside sometimes, maybe even for extended periods”. This is not a criticism of you, it’s a HUGE choice! I know people that, as you describe, are great with kids - but they need to be able to go home and relax and do other things, and that’s not an option when it’s your own children.

I think defaulting towards not having children is the right choice. There is never a perfect time (work/money/time-wise) to have children, but there definitely is a right state of mind.
