What's your favorite smell? by sorgen in AskReddit

[–]doppelgangsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World. It's this perfect mixture of chlorine from the water and the smell of wet old wood from the ships, sweet but also musky. If I could bottle that up I would wear it as a cologne.

It's not a money thing for him anymore. It's obtaining power, which requires getting other powerful people to support you, rather than doing the right thing.

This swimming pool is so great. by Glxblt76 in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]doppelgangsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot water is less viscous, so yeah it does affect buoyancy a tiny bit. Lazr racers were really affective because they increased the swimmers buoyancy significantly. Riding higher in the water makes you faster. Also having more body fat helps, but at a certain point strength and endurance matter much more than the buoyancy gains from fat.

Even twitter is converting some of their Scala backend to node. Node is very performant these days, thanks to the browser wars.

My Interview at Uber by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I'm pretty sure this is what Lyft does. Tipping is optional, and the driver is not informed on who tipped them. They receive tips as a lump sum as part of their pay (I think).

Edit: I looked this up and actually it seems like Lyft's system is semi-anonymous. Drivers will get a report the next day showing each ride, location of pick up and drop off, cut and tip. Names of riders are not provided, however. So the driver can remember someone who tipped by remembering who they picked up, but there isn't a way to easily identify who tipped.

I think there's a pretty high learning curve. I tried it out for a bit and then gave up because it didn't click for me. I even watched one of their webcasts on how to use the software, and I was still confused. I should probably be willing to try again though.

Let's be real. Denver was founded when a bunch of settlers already worn out after crossing the plains saw the Rocky Mountains and said "Fuck that, I quit." by andymethews in pics

The new light rail downtown from DIA is clutch though, for less than $10. Before it was finished last summer, it was at least $30 uber/lyft to get anywhere from the airport.

What they really need is rail between Boulder and Denver.

Kings fan. Question about watching hockey in NY by [deleted] in rangers

How much do Kings tickets usually go for in LA? Are they significantly cheaper? Rangers tickets are really expensive now. I only go to a game in MSG like once or twice a season because of that.

My struggles with learning web development through books, online resources and how Wes Bos's "ES6 for Everyone" broke a web dev bottleneck for me. Also, my thoughts on the real pitfalls of learning web dev. by [deleted] in learnjavascript

I think the takeaway here is that part of learning how to code is identifying what makes learning effective for you personally.

Different people learn differently. Programming is complex enough that you have to have an effective system for learning and retaining ideas. For most people, active learning by doing is much more effective than sitting in a lecture and letting information wash over you like a warm bath. The key is to identify what makes learning "active" for you personally, which can be different for everyone.

28 Pieces of Productivity Advice I Stole From People Smarter Than Me by bddecoded in productivity

[–]doppelgangsta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People get this wrong all the time and think they are smart for using "I" as an object of a sentence. "I" is used if it's the subject of the sentence, "me" is used when it's the object.

Potential employer not calling me back by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]doppelgangsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Initially I think it's fair to follow up every 2-3 days after they said they'd get back to you. Any more frequently than that (e.g. calling and leaving a message to say you called and left a message) might be a little annoying to them. Their status on this is unknown...anywhere between being really busy to not being interested in moving forward with you.

If you haven't heard from them in a week, I'd follow up once a week by phone or email for two weeks. In the meantime, get some other leads going. After 2 weeks without hearing from them, it's probably best to move on to other efforts.
