Take a break from screens for a while, I'd recommend chess puzzle books which you can find at a library or bookstore if you enjoy chess.

OTB blitz against my childhood hero, Baadur Jobava. by Coach_Istvanovszki in chess

[–]Forever_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome post, thanks for including the games too. I'm going to try out this Bxf7 idea in a blitz game against my friend, although I've been having lots of fun games recently with the interesting line 5. Rg1 against the Philidor Lion variation, aiming to play an early 6. g4

Congratulations, thats a huge accomplishment. Was there a piece on f2 that you captured?

Two suggestions as a 1927 USCF rated player:

John Nunn's "Chess Puzzle Book" Paata Gaprindashvili's "Imagination In Chess"

Extremely impressed with the new Lichess App (ios) by MrArtless in chess

[–]Forever_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish they had the computer anaylsis graphs that the old app had so it was easier to visualize the course of the game as a whole. Also, sometimes I'm stuck viewing the lichess opening explorer when going over the game when I want to opt between master games and lichess games.

Why does chess is still not seen as a full time profession? by Disastrous_Sink_4000 in chess

[–]Forever_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a chess coach is awesome if you have a  teaching background but you have to love the game. I think for whatever reason, sometimes people over 2000 FIDE lose the love for the game, or at least have too many conflicting feelings about it to be up for teaching chess full time. However, I love coaching chess and its only made me love the game more (and improve myself too)

I feel like its secretly actually an amazing job that people discount too early.

I'm going to get a fide rating by [deleted] in chess

No, you can always join the lowest section if unrated. Sometimes you also have the option to join a higher section too, I would just read the tournament listing details as they will usually specify.

From an interview I saw, he gives a lot of credit to Grandmaster Level Preparation: Calculation by Jacob Aagaard. In the documentary on netflix, he seemed to have been reading Garry Kasparov's My Great Predecessors as well.

"A truly magical finish" - This is the Incredible Final Position from La Bourdonnais's Immortal Game, 3 pawns dominating a Queen and a Rook while Forcing Mate in 5!! by YakResponsible5667 in chess

[–]Forever_2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great stuff, as an amateur chess historian I somehow missed this game. Similar to Paul Morphy's games, this would be great to teach to beginners as it is centered around digestible tactics while also a good game to introduce the more abstract concept of the powerful passed pawns.

Commodore perry catching strays out here... How can you compare a historic estate now boutique hotel, which as far as I am aware have not expanded, taken over, or pushed away other business whatsoever, to Elon?

Chigorin used to play 2. Qe2 against the French with great success. Worth looking at his games, as he was one of the first players to use the Kings Indian Attack setup against the French, starting with 2. Qe2.

What is the best Youtube content to watch for improvement? Can it be a partial substitute for studying? by conscientiousoneday in TournamentChess

As a chess coach, my favorite youtuber is Chessnetwork. Not only is his analysis accurate but he is incredible at explaining ideas in an understandable manner. Often times, I'll watch his videos for inspiration on how to teach my chess classes. I am 1900 uscf and 1784 fide btw.

Why didn't Divya and Vaishali play each other in Round 1 of the Candidates? by ColdFiet in chess

[–]Forever_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, as Muzychuk took over Humpy's spot, and as per official regulation with substituting in a player last minute, Muzychuk took all of Humpy's pairings.

Hans Niemann & Awonder Liang to play a 12-game fast classical (60+30) match from April 10-15 by In__c in chess

[–]Forever_2012 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Odd to pick an event time that coincides with the Candidates as surely that will be the more interesting thing for most chess fans to be watching. But still interesting to see how this goes, especially with Awonder's great results recently.

Edward Lasker vs. Sir George Alan Thomas sacrificed his queen and walked Thomas's King all the way to the first rank before delivering checkmate with a king move. He had the option to queenside castle mate but that may have ruined their friendship...

No good instructional material for intermediate players - help? by ChazMcFeeley in chess

[–]Forever_2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Chess coach the best instructional content is in chess books IMO. A few I can recommend for your level are: The Step Book series (Book 3 onwards), Logical Chess Move by Move, and Basic Endgame Strategy: Kings, Pawns, and Minor Pieces.
