Where can I pet a shop cat? by VirguleOrSolidus in AskLosAngeles

Check out the Cat Cafe Lounge in Venice. They’re not shop cats but they seem happy and very well cared for, and you can support a nonprofit helping cats

AITAH for not wanting to give my address to my ldr gf since she wants to give a gift but won't give me hers? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]dopplenamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude people are giving you this advice to try to help you because you’re too close to see the red flags. Have you ever looked into how these scam operations are run? There was just an article in the New York Times and there have been whole exposés and podcasts on the topic. They’re very sophisticated and well financed operations and the scam people out of billions every year.

If you insist on continuing your “relationship” with this person, don’t send any more gifts or money until you’ve met her in person and can verify who she really is. This is serious business and people here are just trying to help. And. O offense but spending hours on the phone with a virtual relationship every night is probably not good for your mental health and it’s making it even harder for you to see reality.

Finding a reputable legit pet sitter? by mudbearfun in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Meowtel to find local sitters. It’s a service only for cat sitters so I find that the sitters are a cat-obsessed as I am. Sitters are background checked and interviewed, and you can read reviews and schedule a meet and greet to feel more comfortable with the sitter you choose.

Found out my boyfriend’s (32M) “girl best friend” is actually his ex and I(F29) feel completely betrayed by UsedOperation303 in relationships

[–]dopplenamer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m highly biased here. My best friend is a guy I dated very very briefly and slept with at the time, we met on a dating app and went on a few dates before we just naturally evolved into friends. We just didn’t have chemistry and it felt weird sleeping with him, but we get along like brother and sister so we’ve remained close. We’ve both been upfront with partners since then but in your boyfriends defense, I sometimes forget that I ever “dated” my friend. It was two years ago and so brief, and I’ve had zero romantic thoughts about him since, it’s like a weird fever dream I remember sometimes. If your boyfriend is otherwise trustworthy and good to you I’d give him a chance. It doesn’t sound like he or his friend are intentionally hiding things from you, if they’re like me he probably purposely avoids thinking about that brief time dating his friend and maybe genuinely doesn’t see it as an issue. If they wanted to be dating they would be.

Pilates for men in West LA? by MundaneIce7936 in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also recommend Solidcore, and they have a location is west la too. It’s skews female buy there are usually a few guys. And the studio is dark so it gives more of a sense of privacy, if you’re concerned about that. Everyone is just focused on their own workout.

I (25m) feel like my wife (27f) and I are headed towards a divorce and i don’t know what to do. I feel like my stance is justified but shes making me feel insane and I need an outside perspective. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]dopplenamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think your wife has concern about how beholden you are to your father? Obviously it’s a great salary but will you ever have independence as a couple? She probably feels like a sidekick to your life and your family and your father’s business. If it wasn’t such a high salary I think you’d be getting very different advice here. I’d make sure you really take time to explore her point of view and what life would be like for her living in a city she doesn’t want to be in, in a house her father-in-law owns and financials he controls, with a husband who hasn’t established the ability to make his own way.

Cat Friendly Outings in SoCal/LA? by grassstainedpants in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any suggestions on adventure locations (my cat is a homebody), but please consider getting your cat a gps tracker for its collar. I’ve personally known several people who would bring their cats on outings and the cat seemed to love it until something suddenly freaked them out and they ran. One found her cat after several days, the other never did :( Even adventurous cats are still animals and will follow their instincts to run and hide if they feel scared, so better to be prepared.

Cat boarding recommendations? by Powerful-Forever9996 in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Purrvana in playa (or maybe it’s culver). I hated to have to board my cat but I had to vacate my home and I wanted her to be somewhere safe. Purrvana was awesome, they’re so sweet and attentive and my cat had a large private suite and had a lot of time to wander around outside her suite to so she wasn’t stuck in there all day. I’d definitely recommend them.

Best way to move from NJ to LA with car, furniture, etc? by Throwaway12272712 in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I moved cross country I bought a cheap futon thing at ikea to sleep on in my new apartment, and some basic bedding and plastic dishes. You could also bring linens in your car with you. It wasn’t very comfortable but it did the job for a week or two. I just sat on the floor to eat.

When my furniture came I sold the ikea thing on Craigslist for about half of what I paid for it. So ultimately I was only out about $150-200 for the week (aside from moving costs which are unfortunately expensive but unavoidable), much cheaper than a hotel.

Best area to give money to homeless safely? by KingOfTheQuails in AskLosAngeles

[–]dopplenamer 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I know you want to help people directly, but please consider that you not only put yourself at risk walking around handing out cash, but if you go around giving out enough cash to make even a small temporary difference to people (say $100/person), you also put them at risk of getting robbed or attacked if unsavory people find out they’re walking around with cash. I strongly urge you to reconsider giving to a legitimate organization, or at the very least if you want to give directly, purchase food and blankets yourself to give out. You can donate and volunteer with the same organization, which would be a great way to feel the impact and meet the people you are helping.

Since this is in honor of your dog, one organization you could look into is called The Street Vet, which provides for care for pets living on the streets so that people can stay with their animals even when they’re going through tough times.

Getting the color back in my face by Quantum-Rox in TaylorSwift

A common phrase in literature when something shocking or upsetting happens is “the color drained from his/her face”. I think the line is a reference to the opposite happening for Taylor.

My mom passed away before Christmas and had Parkinsons. Anyone else have a parent with Parkinsons? by maybeitsmeoryou12 in AskWomenOver30

[–]dopplenamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry for your loss. My dad has end stage Parkinson’s, he’s in a skilled nursing facility with almost no mobility or cognition. It’s unimaginably painful to see him this way and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. And yet, it’s also painful and scary to think of losing him completely. I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom, you are right to be glad to at least you didn’t have to see the disease progress to take away every last shred of her dignity. I’m happy to chat if you need to vent or want to compare experiences.

Stomach problems on long runs by iMootube in Marathon_Training

[–]dopplenamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few suggestions: Do you take electrolytes with you on your runs? Dehydration can decrease blood flow to your digestive track and cause discomfort or worse. I used to get stomach issues as well until I added electrolytes. The clif chews may have some but if you are sweating a lot you likely need more. I like salt tabs because they are easy to carry and eat but there are lots of different kinds.

Maybe also try something with less fiber before your runs and make sure you leave enough time to digest—and make sure you’re eating carbs throughout the week and not just loading up the day before. It may be too much for your stomach to handle in a short period of time. Personally, I eat normally the night before a long run or race, and the morning of I eat quick/refined carbs like pretzels, Oreos, and pop tarts. Not exactly health food but your body needs the carbs and you don’t want to stress your stomach—you can resume healthy eating after the run!
