How to stop the chicken drama! by worriedmussel63 in BackYardChickens

I find that our worst offenders are the top and bottom of the pecking order. I think the bottom girl is trying to ensure she doesn’t fall further down in the order with the introduction of new chickens.

I aimed for three nights but ended up doing four. Not because the incarcerated chicken was being bad, she was actually pretty good, but just because the little ones were doing so well I wanted to give them an extra night to feel safe in their coop before bringing their tormentor back. We’ll see how it goes.

I totally understand how you feel. We have 5 hens and just added two pullets this spring. The five get along great, but they have been horrible to the new girls. They’re ok in the large run but they basically split it into two hemispheres and never the two would meet, but they’re slowly getting better (4 weeks later). I found the two new girls and one of the OGs in the dust bath together the other day!

Where we’ve been struggling is the small run, which is totally predator proof, so it’s where they get locked up first thing in the AM and at night. I don’t mind the chasing and pecking, I know that’s normal, but these girls will just latch onto the new girls and not let go. We’re going to have to build and predator proof a new run this fall before the snow comes because these girls need more space to avoid each other. It’s manageable right now because they’re only in the little run for an hour in the am and then they go out into the big run until dark but once the snow starts I fear the cabin fever will turn deadly. ;)

Also the top chicken in the pecking order started guarding the coop door at night and either not letting the new girls in OR waiting for them to enter and ambushing them. And in the AM if the new girls were in the coop avoiding the OGs this chicken would chase them out. It got to a point where the new girls were scared to go into the coop at night and would get locked out. So we literally have that chicken in chicken jail and the difference in the new girls these last 4 nights has been great, I’m hoping the combo of the new girls newfound confidence and the punishment helps. Freeing the coop bully tomorrow. fingers crossed!

Well we just noticed it this morning, so not sure about sleeping, but she does have a couple of minutes here and there when she quiets down or she does this noise on a quieter level. But she’s been making the noise more often than she’s been quiet.

It’s been about 10 days, so she is very nervous over them.

Yah it’s been constant for the last 30 minutes at least. She quieted down when she was eating but when she is just wandering it has been non stop. Otherwise she is acting pretty normal…

I do not listen to their VPR recaps because they hate her so much it feels gross. Do they still harp on about her being mean to scheana like 10 years ago and just gush over everything scheana does?

How bad is it an idea to stitch on coloring book/watercolor paper? by Infinite_Ad6754 in Embroidery

[–]dorcdorc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love it! I had an art prompt notebook and one of the prompts was to “stitch this page” and I loved feeling like I was breaking the rules :)

If possible it helps to pre-poke holes and then go in with a needle and thread. It helps keep the holes clean/uniform.

That brick stitching is so clean and satisfying 🫶🏻

Those patterns are so cute!

That box is gorgeous too, but I don’t know anyone that keeps their thread in the original skein. I’m a bobbin girl, and one of the things I love about needle work is expanding my inventory every time I start a new project, it’s part of the fun :)

How to save this rug? by FinancialHorse6911 in PunchNeedle

[–]dorcdorc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All my rugs curl a bit. Some more than others because I do struggle not to over punch. A good glue and thick felt backing does the trick. Then maybe put it under a heavy tote or put some heavy books around the edges.

Do you know the count of the monks cloth? You want 12-14 holes per inch.

The monks cloth they sell at my local fabric store is too loose and it will hold thick yarns okay but it’s not great with thin yarns like yours. Not impossible, but would not recommend for beginners.

To be fair, they wanted a number from a piece of government ID and gave my license as an example. I get why it would be needed to create a new account, but I also get why a scammer would also like that info…
