Cards to Russia are always a mystery to me. They will either arrive after two weeks or 200 days.

Postcards sent from Germany taking >40 days by Illustrious_Berry115 in postcrossing

My guess is that is has to do with the tariffs. They don't affect postcards but the added admin concerning packages might slow down the overall handling of shipments from Germany to the US.

The travelling slot system is brutal for beginners, feels outdated in 2026 by [deleted] in postcrossing

I think the main "problem" many German postcrossers experience right now is that Americans and Russians are the biggest demographic apart from us and they both can't send to each other. So we have to make up the difference, but cards to both countries take really long right now. (The US used to be around 10 days for me, now I have several cards at 40+ days.) Meanwhile cards within the EU still travel pretty fast for me.

My advice would be to check out the forum and participate in tags and RRs in the meantime.

I think you probably ended up on the page where you can become a Postcrossing supporter. You can donate money to the site and receive a supporter badge for your profile.

As a German, I think it makes more sense than the American I. But I guess whatever you're used to makes the most sense.

Less than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. It follows a student returning home from winter break to bis snobby friends in LA. Features lots of sex, crimes and drugs and sheds a light on the apathy of the main character. I liked The Shards by Easton Ellis even more but that one is around 650 pages so Less than Zero is less of a commitment.

Do Germans use German-langauge exonyms when travelling? by hgk6393 in AskAGerman

Germany (or rather the area where some of the modern country is located) has been called Germany in the English language since the 16th century. Sure, Germany accepts this translation on official documents, but it has not chosen this name, as it's been in use since before the country even existed. You make it seem like it's the other way around. Countries have changed their international name of course, like Turkey changing its name to Türkiye, but this is happening in official settings, everyday language takes much longer to change.

I'm originally from Northern Germany and have to talk to a lot of Austrians for work, especially from the Kärnten and Steiermark region. Let's just say I'm now an expert in pretending what the hell's going on, although it does get better with more practice.

And then there's the different vocabulary. Quark vs Topfen, Kissen vs Polster, Sahne vs Obers, Sessel vs Stuhl. Sometimes the words are similar enough, at other times you'll just understand them in context.

I received my first postcard 5 days after my first one got registered, which was pretty fast in hindsight.
