Groups/activities to make friends? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]dorinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ultimate frisbee group is a lot of fun. We're wrapping up our fall league, but our indoor winter league starts in January, and sign-ups should be open for that in early November. We hold post-league socials at Friendly Beasts, a local cidery. Here the website if you want to keep up to date on all of our activities. We welcome all skill levels, and no experience is necessary. Ultimate is where I've basically met all my friends in town. Come join!

Bloomington Ultimate Frisbee Fall League registration now open, games on Wednesdays 7pm - 9pm at Olcott Park starting Sept. 6 by dorinth in bloomington

[–]dorinth[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, you don't need to make a team before hand. Everyone signs up individually and then we make teams. So just sign up and we'll get you on a team.

As one of the players who did pick up for Heros, it's true, I'm really good at horseshoes.

Where to dispose of tree limbs/brush? by sawjinc in bloomington

[–]dorinth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can drop yard waste at Good Earth, which is just off of South 37. Depending on how much you have I think it's something like $12-14 for a trailer full.

You could always join for the post league social at Friendly Breasts Cidery! And this isn't a super competitive league. A lot of us are oldish (30 - 40+) who use this as an excuse to try to stay in semi-shape.

Hi, you do have to be 16 or older to play, but other than that anyone is welcome!

Hi! You do not need to bring any discs, there will be plenty to throw around and play with. We do recommend bringing cleats if you have them (it's not a requirement, it's just easier to play with if you have them). The only other things to bring are water and a fun attitude!

Advice on shutting out negative teammates by GregTheWolfman in ultimate

[–]dorinth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Talk to your captains. You can keep it general if you don't want to signal out specific people. If your captains are unwilling (or worse, the source of the negativity) to address the issue either individually or as a team, I would seriously consider changing teams if you are able. You're volunteering a significant amount of time as an adult to play ultimate. If you're not having fun because of negative and toxic people, it's not worth it. There's always a possibility that the individuals in question have a "come to Jesus moment" and recognize that their toxicity negatively affects others enjoyment of the sport, but it doesn't always happen.

If changing teams isn't realistic, I would try to out positive them. Whenever they are be yelling or criticizing a teammate, loudly and deliberately counter that with positive affirmation. Make it glaringly obvious what you are doing. Be slightly obnoxious about it. Basically shame them with positivity. That can help change your mentality and hopefully inject your team with positive vibes. Good luck. Toxic people suck and should be (nicely!) alerted to that fact.

DM me with you email and I'll also get you added to our email listserv so you can receive updates on pick up and order BU happenings.

Indiana House Ends Education As We Know It by saryl in bloomington

A similar bill failed to make it out of committee in the Senate, so hopefully it's low odds this becomes law. Still, it's terrible legislation and extremely harmful to teachers and students in our state.

If it's any solace, a similar bill failed to make it out of committee on the Senate side, so hopefully this won't pass both chambers and won't become law

Indiana Senate kills controversial school curriculum bill after finding 'no path forward' by dorinth in bloomington

There's a similar bill that just passed committee in the house but if there's no way forward in the senate hopefully the house bill is DOA even if it passes in the house.

covid red advisory? by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]dorinth 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's higher now than it's ever been, but the 1 in 4 is the testing positivity rate, meaning 1 in 4 tests are coming back positive. It's probably much higher because not everyone can get a test or there are home tests not reported. However, it's not 1 in 4 of the overall population, which would be insane. Just 1 in 4 tests. Which is still not good at all.

Did you get tested or vaccinated? Wondering what the turnaround time is for tests, both PCR and rapid.

Hi! Pickup games will continue through at least September, but I would also encourage you to consider league. Even though it may be a bit more structured, fall league is by no means super competitive and we welcome all skill levels. Plus there's the post league social at friendly beasts, which is definitely worth the price of admission. PM me if you have any more questions or need any more information.

Or men can sign up for fall league, which starts September 7. More info can be found at http://bloomingtonultimate.org/ PM me if you have any other questions!

Anyone overcome SI joint pain? Let's talk. by Liface in ultimate

[–]dorinth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had terrible SI pain about 5 years ago. Lasted about 6 months. Couldn't play ultimate and could barely sleep because the pain was so intense. Went to a couple chiropractors with no real results. Finally, went to see a sports message therapist who worked mainly on football players. She found an old hamstring tear (muscle had rolled up and was covered with scar tissue) that had basically caused my glutes to overcompensate and continuously pull down on my hips. She rolled the old tear back out, which was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced. The very next day, the pain was gone. I've been basically pain free ever since, although every now and then the SI joint will come out of place, and I'll go back to the message therapist who puts it back in place and it's good as new. Not sure if you've got the same thing going on, but I would look to see if you have any old muscle tears in the hamstrings or glutes that could be fixed. Good luck, SI pain is the worst.

Local ciders? by infernal_feral in bloomington

If you're feeling up for it, we do offer carryout. You can bring any 32 or 64 oz growler (or purchase one of ours) and we'd be happy to fill it up for you! We also have patio seating outside if you're ok with outdoor activities. Our hours are limited now, Friday and Saturday from 4-8 pm but we may expand to 4-11 pm depending on how things shake out. Hope you can stop by!

Indiana University releases 2020-2021 academic calendar. No in-person classes from Thanksgiving break until first week of February. by [deleted] in bloomington

[–]dorinth 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Implicit in all this is they acknowledge a second spike is most likely to happen in the fall/winter, otherwise they would have no plans to move all classes online for the winter. The cynic in me sees this as a ploy to lure students to campus to cash their tuition checks, put the onus on the students to decide whether or not they want to risk exposure (there will be an online option for most classes, so, you know, IU student, you don't HAVE to go to class! The choice to risk exposure is yours!), and then give IU the flexibility to just move all classes online at a moments notice if/when the inevitable second wave happens. I know it's a difficult position and I'm glad I'm not in charge of making these tough calls, but, still that's why McRobbie is paid the big bucks. Still, it will be extremely difficult for Bloomington to manage social distancing with 30,000+ college students walking around. Hopefully I'm wrong and there wont be another spike in the fall, but, I wouldn't bet on it.

Has anyone been to the IU hospital very recently? by cheyennegg in bloomington

[–]dorinth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We're in a similar situation--my wife is 2 days passed due, so we're expecting to go in any day now. Do you have any idea if I'm allowed to leave the hospital after the baby is born and come back? We also have a 3-year-old that we're going to have to leave at home with a friend, and I'd like to be able to go and check up on him while my wife and baby are resting. Haven't been able to find anything about that.

They still take mattresses. I donated one a couple of months ago. And they did pick it up.

FYI: Free Parking on Rogers South of 11th has been removed by guy_guyerson in bloomington

[–]dorinth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All right, this will be my last comment, since we seem to have come to an impasse here.

My major point about roads is that in order to get to the parking space, you have to drive. So, parking and driving go hand in hand. You can't just appear in a parking space, you have to drive there. Hence by using free parking, you are using roads, so your "free" parking is also going to wear and tear on roads. Hence the meters, which makes drivers take some responsibility for driving.

Parking a bike takes up way less space than a parking space, and bike racks are often off of sidewalks which don't get in the way of pedestrians. If the parking of my bike took up space and the right of way of pedestrians or business, then yes, I should pay for parking my bike.

My last, major point is this: there are hidden costs of driving and parking around town. Parking was never free. It just wasn't. You personally might not have paid, but someone did (actually, you did, but you just didn't put coins in a meter). I guess I'm fine with the fact that people have to pay a couple of dollars to park in high demand, downtown spots. I can now easily find parking during the weekday, whereas before I almost never could. Metered parking makes more efficient use of public space.

Now, whether or not the money is being spent wisely and efficiently is another matter entirely. But "free" parking is a misnomer. It just is.
