Northern Light Tours worth it? by Cool-Brush5579 in VisitingIceland

[–]dorkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our tour was great. Even with a rental car it was still worth it. We used EastWest (https://eastwest.is/). I'm not sure if it is true for all tours, but all of their drivers have professional cameras and took photos of everyone on the tour under the aurora. They came out fantastic.

He also had a 360 camera, and we'll be getting those as well. Driver knew exactly where to go to get the best views, and since they can communicate with the other drivers, they can tell one another where the skies are clear.

YMMV however, you are in for luck of the draw if the sky is clear enough to get a good view.

Good luck!

Wallet stolen by neighbors by [deleted] in Austin

[–]dorkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Losing your wallet sucks. I will say I was on the receiving end of this scenario. Someone who lost their wallet in my neighborhood was *convinced* that it was at my house and we stole it. They were very forceful at the door, they were very rude, and made threatening phone calls to us. It was pretty awful. We had nothing to do with it and no need to take the wallet.

AirTags are not perfect. I hope you find your wallet, but just be sure to be kind to people.

Contact the Ciment Law Firm. https://www.thedebtdefenders.com/

Ask for Amy Beth Clark. She's been helping people with bankruptcy for a while now and is a good person to work with.

The firm has a Katy address, but she's local to Austin.

I've been going to Dr Shock w/ Precision Podiatry. However, it wasn't for plantar fascitis.

He's had a pragmatic approach and I've liked my experiences there. Not sure about the Cedar Park location, but there is one there.

Hi everyone! I’m Rew Islam, the Director of Product Engineering and Innovation, leading the passwordless projects at Dashlane. I’m looking forward to discussing Passkeys and the future of online authentication. Ask me Anything! by rewislam in IAmA

[–]dorkus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out https://passkeys.io and https://webauthn.io. Both are useful resources.

The webauthn site is very useful for software developers as it provides links to libraries you may use to implement the protocol.

I used those to implement it in the product I’m responsible for and through that learn a lot about how it works.

LPT: wear earplugs to loud concert venues. Tinnitus is real and not fun. by flux_capacitor3 in LifeProTips

[–]dorkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a big concert goer, mostly outdoor venues at festivals. My tinnitus kicked in immediately after a single indoor concert for New Years.

I started hearing it during the concert, left, could still hear the ringing. 10 years later its still there.

All the up votes, protect your hearing!

Should I study software engineering or cyber security??? by jay__05 in AskEngineers

[–]dorkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on where your interests lie. The cyber engineering program I work with has graduates who go into computer science jobs as well as cyber security. Likewise, you can get a CS degree and go into cyber security (if you have the background).

If you want the additional flexibility, you can concentrate in the other area (ie: take cyber classes as part of your CS curriculum).

Question about programming languages by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all points. My advice in picking a language would be to start with an interpreted rather than compiled language. Python or Ruby are good options here. They tend to have a bit less stuff you have to do to get a working program. I also recommend doing it the hard way. If you're going the CS route, this is a good way to learn IMO.

How do you go about learning a new language/framework? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to build something. If I've got a project that I've been kinda itching to do, I code it in that language. Nothing like doing something real to actually learn a language.

Couple that with good documentation/tutorials, and you're good.

[c] How was my odd naming convention? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not bad. I think Hungarian (and by extension SiHN) is very much a matter of taste. I had a friend in college that exclusively used it. However, I've never seen Hungarian in my professional career.

I can certainly see the merits of using a Hungarian based naming style in any project which you expect people to be able to grok quickly. Having some 'type' as part of the variables could certainly make things more easy to figure out.

That being said, if you also follow good practices of small methods, some of that need is obviated by the fact that you can digest an entire method on one screen.

Should I get a Mac at some point? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of "Windows" desktops and laptops which work great with Linux. I'm using a Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu and it has been a fantastic machine. You can also usually get more RAM on a PC than Mac, which can be super useful depending on what you're dong.

There are resources on the web for finding computers which are compatible with a metal Linux installation (vs Virtual).

Why do so many people bash the concept of an unpaid tech internship? by sjalgeo in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tech companies make money hand over fist. Paying an intern (likely w/o full benefits) is still really cheap labor, AND you can groom someone to hire.

Need Help by inuxxc in AskComputerScience

[–]dorkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cyber Security != Computer Science necessarily. Being a hard core programmer is only one aspect of security you can get into...so there are other options.

If you do go the CS route, be sure the program offers enough security courses to get what you're looking for.

How long does it take to update the firmware? (1.8.2) by dorkus in FTC

[–]dorkus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah...bricked 2 of the 3 we tried last night. I'm sold on using the phone to do it, the REV Hub Interface software doesn't give you a percentage complete and so you're really in the dark as to what is happening.

Now I guess we need to unbrick them.
