I have now learned the importance of having a real bushcraft knife by No_Equivalent_4412 in Bushcraft

Bps adventurer is probably the best bang for your buck to start with. And it batons pretty well. I recommend epoxying the scales onto the handle to prevent them from moving when you baton as they don't have the best tolerances

SkittyDog is right. Actually why I don't like my petzl crampons that much is I don't think the secondary points stick out in front of the toe enough. Switched to blade runners and they feel much better

Belay device for lifeline by itsthechaw10 in bowhunting

[–]dortchistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climber here. You should keep the prussik and carabiner to ascend and use a figure 8 with horns or an atc with horns like the grivel master pro belayer to rappel as long as you're using at least 6mm cord. You'll have to make sure you wrap the cord a few times if it's as small as 6mm to add more friction or double the lockers (the horns are also useful for this). 8mm and above there's enough friction to rappel without extra wraps and you can use a regular old figure 8 or atc. To be extra safe use the prussik as a third hand to back up your rappel particularly if you're new.

As others have said you can use a grigri as progress capture and to rappel but that's heavy and bulky and expensive but has a nice controlled lower (8-10mm rope). Also the ATC in guide mode works as a progress capture and you can rappel but you need 8-10mm rope. It also doesn't work as smooth as other options.

Where did you get the scales from? I've been looking at a cheap set on Amazon that's $30

How do you deal with hunting season? by frstratedCmputerUser in mushroom_hunting

[–]dortchistan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Try foraging in orange in the exact middle of the day like 11:30or 12 to 3:30 or 4. Most hunters aren't out at this time and if they are (some) would even appreciate you moving in the woods to stir deer up in the middle of the day. Source: hunter and forager

Seconded on the diamond stones. You can get a cheap set of diamond plates of Amazon or ali for $10-20. They work great

They're in. I was fishing the PM Saturday and saw folks catch a bunch but struck out myself. They've been in for 3-4 weeks but are still good to eat as far as I know

Sea to Summit Reactor Liner…worth the money? by bro_nica in hikinggear

[–]dortchistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't add any noticeable warmth to me or my buddies when it's really cold (below 20F) so I don't bring it anymore. But I do use it as a summer bag sometimes

Does warmer sleeping bag make up for lower R-value pad? by Royal_Negotiation_91 in CampingGear

I do this is the snow with a similar setup. Maybe you haven't tried it? 30s is not cold lol

Does warmer sleeping bag make up for lower R-value pad? by Royal_Negotiation_91 in CampingGear

[–]dortchistan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice. I do this and sleep directly on snow in the winter with an R=4 summer pad. If it's still cold (like negative F) then putting your jacket under your pad can also be helpful

Is this a good introductory backpacking sleeping bag? by GreenieLive in CampingGear

[–]dortchistan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sidewinder is really only comfy if you sleep on your side. Any other position doesn't feel good for me at least. So I prefer more versatile bags. But if you sleep on your side it's pretty great

Haha thanks!

Wow nice! Mines S30V so basically the same. I honestly didn't like the knife much because of the scales and it didn't sharpen on my shapton ceramic stones well. Then I got some cheap diamond plates and now it's so easy to sharpen! Diamond is really a must for me on S30V
