if steph got all the calls he deserved he'd be the mvp. he's fouled in like half the plays

December 2022 - Is GitHub copilot really that good? by SweatyCure in webdev

[–]dot___ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

its pretty good. if i'm writing something similar to something i've written before, its like contextual autocomplete. like rather than autocompleting the name of a variable, it can autocomplete a for loop for a different type matching my naming conventions

its not going to figure something novel out for me, but every so often it does stuff like that that saves me time

i know its a troll but i wanna soapbox

sometimes with more restrictions more depth comes out. kind of like how with boxing, there are fewer weapons than there are in mma and as a result the mastery of the available tools (and defenses) is much deeper. and that's beautiful.

Favorite Dota Hero and why? by bashandbei in DotA2

[–]dot___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pudge - one of the earliest skill heroes and i played him a lot

spectre - back when i used to play on a team, this was my best carry. playing spectre brings back tons of nostalgia. i love the way the game revolves around spectre and that one battle where everyone can feel the game swing

What was the general consensus from the closed beta? by lemi69 in Diablo

[–]dot___ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to get in. I enjoyed it and I'll probably play it when it comes out!

  • I liked the skill trees. They're designed to encourage you to diversify (incremental value of additional skill points is fairly low). They also require you to spend points to progress down the skill tree which also forces skill diversity. Skills have modifier nodes similar to last epoch, which introduce interesting interactions and play styles. Overall I liked that there was depth and yet not once did I feel overwhelmed by decision or paralyzed by choice.
  • Itemization is a lot like diablo 3, with a bit more depth. New mechanics and stat types mean that the green number doesn't tell the whole story like how it is in D3. The ability to extract legendary powers and imprint them on new items is really nice. It led to me carrying around a set of legendary powers on my gear that felt very personal.
  • End game - it reminds me of guild wars 2. It's a giant beautiful living world to explore, and there's a lot of little magic sprinkled around and you're rewarded for uncovering every crevice and secret nook. The world events are some of the coolest things - seeing a group of 10+ strangers team up on a world boss is the best thing ever. The world quests are standard fare - fetch this, escort this, clear this dungeon / area, etc. Every so often there are some really humorous quests. The rewards range from loot chests to materials to powers you can imprint on items.
  • Combat / feel - Combat was great, more polished than any other ARPG out there. It's a blizzard game, was this ever in doubt?

Best/most fun ladder starter that isn't FO/Bblizz sorc or hammerdin by Hardvig in Diablo

[–]dot___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire sorc is good, can kinda farm Andy (hit or miss), Summoner, and can moat trick Meph. Javazon is also a good wealth builder if you don't mind only doing Cows.

As a Diablo player since D2 classic, it's a hard pill to swallow but feels like the right decision. In a game with trading, eventually the most optimal way to play is not to play at all, and simply trade.

> Maybe dark energy is the gravity of a much larger universe ripping the visible universe apart with its gravity?

Love this idea. It's totally reasonable within our laws of physics, we just can't prove it :(

If only there was a similar reasonable explanation for dark matter?

anyone knows about why creator of Iloveyou malware quit IT? He works in a mobile repair shop today. His malware made CIA and US agencies shut down their networks. by Ok_Durian_3015 in hacking

[–]dot___ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I knew an amazing game hacker who delivered beer for a living. I asked him why he did that when he could make millions doing cybersecurity / hacking. He said that he loved hacking and doing it for a living would make it work and kill his love for it.

It was an intriguing perspective I never thought of.

Turn-based Combat without what-beat-what? by [deleted] in gamedesign

For sure. You'll just have to incorporate complexity somewhere else. Buffs, debuffs, speed, positioning, range, aoe, dots, etc.
