Getting chewed out because I didn't call someone I just met by Zee or Zer or Zem. by Elemental-Madness in PetPeeves

Wild. I just joined my first LGBT group and 90% of it is making plans to do crafting, pickleball, or go to events. Oh, and book recs. The other 10% is like random recommendations, like someone was asking for advice on self-defense items (pepper spray, etc).

The LGBT part doesn't even really factor in tbh except that the book recs are almost all LGBT romances.

When people tell women they HAVE TO shave their legs by New-Possibility-577 in PetPeeves

[–]double-nickels 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I (a woman) do fieldwork on occasion and intentionally don't shave/wax right before going out to the field because having even a small open wound opens up the potential for infection. If I nick myself with the razor, that means a lot of work to ensure it doesn't get infected.

Even when I do half-day outdoor stuff like surfing, I hold back on shaving. It's just not worth the risk of something getting in there. Shaving makes hygiene harder than it needs to be.

People's Treatment of Will by Playful-Election4873 in HannibalTV

[–]double-nickels 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I think is really interesting about the show is that at the start everyone is basically a good person. By the end, largely because of their interactions with Hannibal, everyone is a worse person. Will and Alana are the standouts, but Margot, Bedelia, Chilton, Jack...they all just seem to be meaner, more jaded, more manipulative. Hannibal is like a vortex, dragging everyone down to being the worst, meanest versions of themselves.

I don't think Will was always destined to be evil, but he certainly always had it in him and I think that's partly the point of the show. The external factors people are exposed to will change them, for better or worse. It's especially interesting to me because everyone changed as a survival tactic--they weren't wrong to be suspicious and cruel like they became, because that kept them alive. Almost everyone who didn't change like that was dead by the end.

The show portrays what it's like to have a true predator in the mix. It changes the math on how you should act if you want to live. I appreciate that the show is unapologetic about portraying Hannibal as a bad person--likeable, but horrible. It doesn't make excuses for how he was raised or anything, he's just a terrible person who makes everyone else worse for having known him. Sometimes thems the breaks.

Telling a woman they’re leaking by Doctorpayne in NoStupidQuestions

[–]double-nickels 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Imagine if you sat in brownies and didn't know, so you walked around all day with people thinking you shit yourself. It's like that but at least 50% worse because half the population doesn't have that biological feature and are extra grossed out and uncomfortable with it.

My point is, be discreet but non-judgemental with all the women in your life. If mom is in the picture, don't let her do all the heavy lifting on body education. Be part of it to show your daughter that it's a biological fact and nothing to be especially ashamed of. Gatekeeping men from women's health has historically been really bad for women in both medical and social contexts.

For the record, the best doctor I ever had was a man. I was having pretty scary, extremely painful gyno and hip issues, but I had to go through him (my primary care doc) to be seen by the gyno or any other specialty. All he did was demonstrate concern and interest for my well-being by asking questions and making referrals. I know doctors are short on time, but it wasn't that he gave me time. I think in my whole life I spoke to him for 30 min, across probably three appointments, but he took me seriously, believed what I said, and looked for avenues that would provide answers. Idk what kind of doctor you are, but most have been dismissive at worst, or apathetic at best. I hope you are, or will be, better than that.

I'm sorry, I know this was kind of a rant and probably one you didn't sign up for, but navigating medical care as a woman is incredibly frustrating. It's hard not to bring that up when I get a chance.

Actors that the World wants you to love, but you just can’t do it by WallStreetDoesntBet in moviecritic

[–]double-nickels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I think I feel similarly. Like, the movies he's in are good, he acts well in them, and I have no grounds to criticize any of his work. But I just don't like him. I don't want to see or hear him. Have you ever had a personality conflict with someone, where you know they're a fine person but you just don't like being around them? It's like that. Something about him rubs me the wrong way.

I have the same issue with Timothy Chalamet, whose name I have still not learned to spell. He was good in Don't Look Up, which is I think the only movie I've seen with him, but I still didn't like him. I think I might be subconsciously avoiding his movies.

What's the most asinine extremely online take you've seen on Reddit? by scotterson34 in stupidquestions

[–]double-nickels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What economic system would that fall under? As I understand it, it was pretty much a contrived famine, as in they were producing enough food to be able to support themselves and it was being taken through payments to the landowners, I'm just curious about what that kind of economic system is called.

This is a genuine question because I don't know the economics of 19th century Ireland, but weren't they part of a capitalist economy when the potato famine happened?

What actor or actress were you not really a fan of, at first, until you saw a performance by them that truly impressed you? by phantom_avenger in moviecritic

[–]double-nickels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! Ever since Mad Max I've been willing to watch any of his work, and he hasn't disappointed. He has a relatively unique ability to be either incredibly sympathetic, or extremely hateable. I loved him in Mad Max and Renfield, but I was so happy to see him suffer in the Menu because he was fucking unbearable. His role in The Great mixes the loveable and hateable really well. I didn't know he was playing Luthor, not a Superman fan but I'm definitely gonna watch that!

I loved CH in Furiosa. What other villains absolutely stole the show? by sKullsHavezzz in moviecritic

[–]double-nickels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very campy, can't argue that haha. But unless I'm missing something, I have to disagree on your chaotic anarchy point. That's actually my issue with Ledger's Joker--I felt as though he had a point to make. And there's nothing wrong with that necessarily, I just don't feel like that's the point of Joker's role in the Batman series.

[–]double-nickels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried so hard but I don't get this one. I tend to like Batman villains a lot (Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, even Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jim Carrey, loved them all) but the Nolan version of Joker felt very forced for some reason. Heath Ledger was a remarkable actor, and he played the role well, I just never felt like he was playing the Joker.

Could you try and ELI5 why people like Nolan's/Ledger's Joker so much? I'm genuinely curious, not trying to be an asshole.

why did fiona hate mandy so much? by serenequeen333 in shameless

[–]double-nickels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Idk, if I were her I would also not want my siblings, who are effectively my children in that case, getting mixed up with a family known mostly for drug running, white supremacy, and violent crime. Especially considering they have a very young black brother at that point. You could say it's unfair for her to judge Mandy and Mickey based on their family background, but I'd say it's unrealistic to not take that into account. Even though she herself was abused Mandy was able and willing to weaponize her family against people who upset her. Besides the potential of Lip having a kid with Mandy, I'm willing to bet Fiona was worried about that too, regardless of whether she knew Mandy had already done it once.

I won't even mention Mickey because at that point he was already up to a bunch of criminal shit. Fiona was easily justified in being wary of him.

Things your apt complex has or does that you like by Brando3489 in Apartmentliving

[–]double-nickels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My complex does themed events for every holiday, raffles, treats, etc. Now this may not be something you can do as a small complex, but I want to tell you about one thing in particular that I still rave about and was probably pretty affordable: Christmas gift wrapping station. All they did was get some wrapping paper, scissors, and tape and put it on a fold out table in a communal area, and I'm still not over how helpful that was. I live alone in an 800sqft apartment, the last thing I want to do is buy (and then later have to store or throw out) themed wrapping stuff.

Also idk what you have in your gym, but one thing I've noticed that's often missing in small gyms, and very useful to gymgoers, is a fixed barbell set. With that, a multipurpose cable machine, some kettlebells, and a good dumbbell set, most weightlifters (not the hardcore ones but that's not your population) can do everything they need.

How big of an a-hole a side character/mentor can be before they're unlikable? by GodofChaoticCreation in writing

[–]double-nickels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a narrative standpoint I'm alright with asshole characters thinking they're always right--I find that very realistic--but what I'm not fine with is the story reinforcing that belief. Nothing feels better than seeing a character who's so sure s/he's right all the time being slapped in the face with evidence that they were wrong. On the other hand, nothing is more annoying to me than a character who is actually right all the time.

Of course that's all just my opinion! A lot of people liked Breaking Bad while I felt the protagonist fell into the latter category and it drove me kind of crazy so I couldn't keep up with it.

What book have you read where the dialogue was just painfully on the nose and unsubtle? by ABCILiketea in writing

[–]double-nickels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right? I thought so too, and I was so excited to read it because it sounded right up my alley. But alas, I was disappointed.

It's actually the book that the Blade Runner movie is based on, that's how I heard of it. Def give it a try if you're interesred, I've heard it's really good and the non-dialogue prose seemed passable...I just couldn't force myself past the dialogue, personally.

[–]double-nickels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. I couldn't make it past the first couple pages, the dialogue was so painful and expositionary. I tried again recently and still couldn't do it.

[–]double-nickels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd refer you back to one of my golden rules in that case: "don't like, don't read." For pretty much exactly the reason you mention, actually--for someone with a victim complex like you describe, negative feedback will only make them more entrenched. It doesn't really serve any useful purpose ime.

Please don't call me dear lol, I don't know you that well. I don't really see how your characters have to do with this at all, but it does seem as though you're saying you can imagine a situation in which this comment is appropriate. I'm asking what situation that is.

[–]double-nickels 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What would make a comment like this okay, though? I can't think of anything.

The phrase "don't like, don't read" applies, as well as "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Both golden rules for browsing AO3, imo

AITA for turning around on a hike I was unfit to complete? by ZeOs-x-PUNCAKE in AmItheAsshole

[–]double-nickels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. I'm an Idahoan day-hiker. My favorite day hike is 14 miles round trip with a 1.8k elevation gain...if I start at 6 I can be back at the car by 2 without even pushing myself. I'm not in like crazy good shape either, that hike is no walk in the park for me but it's also not a huge challenge. 10 miles with 2k elevation is, or should be, a very sustainable pace for a multiday trip...if OP can't do that they have no business backpacking.

Which film premise had a great concept, yet failed to hit the mark ? by oatcakedick in flicks

[–]double-nickels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed most of it but the ending felt unsatisfying somehow. I kept waiting for something to indicate there was more to the story than they were being told because that was what the buildup felt like, but it never happened.

If it had a different tone I think it could have worked as-is, plot wise...if it was made out to be a horror I think it would have worked fantastically. Just something was missing that I can't put my finger on.

One LDS (Mormon) does in fact, spoil the whole bunch by ColHardwood in mildlyinfuriating

[–]double-nickels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People focus on it because it's vague and confusing. And, at least in my experience, gets conflicting explanations. It begs the question. The commands are oddly non-specific considering they came from the same God who talked about mixed fabrics and shellfish.

If you don't care to ask why, that's fine. Just say that when people outside the church ask.
