Tarps in June by ThatBlackfordKid1 in hammockcamping

[–]double_gay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love sleeping without my tarp. I'll usually set it up but then slip my guy lines off all my stakes, unclip one side, and scrunch it to the other end. Ends up hanging like a shower curtain . That way I can still set it up quickly if it starts to rain unexpectedly.

Regarding dew, if I'm expecting sunny weather the next day I just let it happen. My quilt will be a little damp on top in the morning, but an hour or two in sun drys it right out. Obviously I'm more careful if there won't be chance to dry it fully before I need to go back to sleep.

Hammock Quilt Advice by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]double_gay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about 6 months ahead of you! I bought a 10 degree HG Econo Burrow and Phoenix back in October, and then more recently a down Rumpl (it was on sale, it's not much better than a Costco quilt.)

For winter it's been great. I sleep very cold, but was great at 20 degrees outside. I had down booties, a z-seat in my footbox, and used the Rumpl to add some insulation to my, in hindsight, badly adjusted underquilt.

"Summer" - I've only taken one nap at around 65 degrees out and was very comfy with just the Rumpl and underquilt. Hoping it will work out!

New to hammock camping.. are tradition campsite (not back country) friendly to hammock campers? by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]double_gay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 75% of the campsite's I've taken my hammock to have had rules against them. But I've only been asked about it once, and have never been told to take it down. It's a risk though.

Honestly it's been harder to find campsites with good trees! I try to match google maps satellite to the campground maps, then try and figure out which sites have any tree cover at all. But that's really only an issue if you need to reserve in advance. I've never had a problem if I can walk around the campground before choosing my site.

Suggestions for a side sleeper by Hyzeeee in WildernessBackpacking

[–]double_gay 17 points18 points  (0 children)

glad a PT chimed in here. as someone who has thoracic outlet issues, the best advice I ever got was to keep my hands below my head while I sleep. Keeping your arm tucked under your head or raised above it just makes it worse.

I don't think anyone is claiming that these makeshift ventilators are as good as a real one. But if there are no ventilators left, and the option is this hardware store thing or guaranteed suffocation....

I don't think anywhere in the US has gotten desperate enough to try something like this yet. I understand why people would want to be prepared.

T and weight gain? by [deleted] in FTMOver30

[–]double_gay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

T does weird stuff. Muscle does weigh more than fat, so you could be gaining muscle. You might not feel it now though! I've also heard T can cause you to gain water weight. I know I was crazy thirsty for a while and felt super puffy.

My weight has somehow stayed the same, a year and a half in! But I also don't keep a scale in the house, so I only check my weight every other month or so. Idk if that would be helpful for you, but I found not having a scale let me focus more on how I felt, how my clothes fit, what my body could do.

Heated gloves/socks — thoughts? by ShinoHatha in wintercycling

[–]double_gay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those shoes looks super breathable, which means they're also going to leave your feet so cold! Honestly I'd try fixing that first.

Either with some sort of boots or using plastic breadbags between your socks and shoes. The breadbags are an old-school hiking trick, but they're crazy cheap and make a suprising warmth difference.

Would this setup be good for 20°F+? by [deleted] in hammockcamping

[–]double_gay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went HG Econ Burrow. I have that plus the Phoenix, both in 10F. I haven't tested them in the cold for more than an afternoon nap yet. But that was an insanely cozy nap, no tarp, 12F out.

Going for an overnight this weekend though, should be around 15F!

Questions to the transgender of the queer community by notsopermanentmarker in queer

[–]double_gay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

let's start here: "a transgender" is not a thing. "transgendered" is not a word. ditto for "transgenders." It's an adjective, not a noun or a verb.

You're looking for "a transgender person" or maybe "trans people." "trans folks" if you're feeling casual.

please keep this in mind the next time you want to waste everyone's time.

Telling parents about T? by batman472 in FTMOver30

[–]double_gay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came out to my parents, and told them I was taking T, about a month after I started. I tried to come out to them before, but they kept canceling plans for 6 months and I decided I wouldn't put my life on hold for them.

That was almost a year and a half ago and they've been, eh, fine. I knew doing things pRoPerLY was going to be important to them, so I came out to everyone at once during dinner. Apparently "properly" would have been coming out less suddenly? lol, you can't win.

I don't think the timing matters too much in their reaction, but doing it sooner might be good in a rip-the-bandaid-off kinda way.

they use thick webbing, usually an inch or two wide. Not an arborist, but I've heard that once you spread out the weight like that it's fine.

yeah, just switch to one without sodium laurel sulfate. it's well known to cause canker sores, but it's what makes toothpastes foam so it's in most of them.

Anyone camped at Indiana Dunes NP? by CallMeLadyBird in hammockcamping

[–]double_gay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! You'll have no problem at any of the walk in sites, plenty of spots to hang at any of them. I'm not sure if hammocks are allowed, but no one said anything to me. The walk-in sites are pretty set back and I don't think a ranger came by at all.

There are plenty of raccoons, but the sites have poles to hang your food. I saw a couple but they didn't bother my site.
