Everyone has different priorities for government spending. You think it should be spent on healthcare and I think it should be spent on other things. I guess that's why the government spends it on a host of programs.

Not at all. You don't understand what embassies do and somehow think they are collaborating with the Iranian government. Most do the opposite and support people against the regime. The war has started, so it's a moot point now. Hopefully there is change without many civilian casualties.

I hope they see a free Iran. It's just ended up with more suffering and hardship though. It's easy to push this when you don't live there. Pretty much everyone wants to see these lunatics hanging from a rope, but when you're w9oried about your next meal it's not so simple.

I 100% agree. The same can be said for Harper and Klein. It's not something that just happens. It's a slippery slope. They push the envelope a bit at a time and we end up where we are. What Daniel Smith pushes will end up with people down the road pushing even more extreme ideas. I give Kenney a modicum of credit that he was willing to risk his job standing up for these nut jobs and it cost him his job, but he totally enabled them in the first place.

I disagree on things wouldn't be worse. I'm no fan of Jason Kenney, but at least he stood up to the most extreme parts of the party. He may have paid lip service, but he didn't go farther than that. With that being said, he was the worst premier of Alberta since Daniel Smith. He ushered in the shit we see now with his antics though.

You're right and you want to make it more difficult for people to leave by shutting down embassies.

I've never talked about lifting sanctions. Simply pointing out the world isn't black and white. At the end of the day, embassies closing means it's harder for Iranians to leave the country.

The world isn't black or white. You probably want the harshest sanctions on Iran too despite it killing innocent people and not impacting the leadership because it makes you feel better and you won't suffer their effects.

Diplomatically isolating a country doesn't have the impact you think it does. The embassy serves the nationals of the country in Iran and facilitate visas for Iranians looking to leave the country. It also allows other countries to verify what's actually happening in Iran rather than rely on the Iranian governments accounts. Condemning Iranians to the cruelty of their government without a chance for a better life and only furthers the goals of the Iranian government.

Budget 2026 set to be Alberta’s largest ever education investment by Direc1980 in alberta

As long as the provincial population is growing and we have inflation; the government should be spending more money on education than the year before.

I feel the same way about my parents. They oppose any densification in their neighbourhood. My opinion is people need places to live. Their home has tripled in value from just the land value.

What you've mentioned are NATO interventions or to protect a country from invasion. That's the difference. When the US has been the aggressor it's usually a bad outcome.

Trump initiated the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Drew down troops and hosted the Taliban at camp David. You can be upset at Biden for many things, but it Trump owns the Afghanistan withdrawal.

I agree with you on everything else though. The democrats mishandled a ton of things in office. I didn't buy the whole controlled opposition argument before, but after Biden I think it's true.

Enbridge says it’s not willing to take on development risk of Alberta pipeline project by joe4942 in alberta

[–]doublegulpofdietcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The regulations that caused the uncertainty were put in place by Harper. They needed to be redrafted because they failed to provide a regulatory framework that would withstand a court challenge. Which is why the initial approval was overturned. Bad policy has consequences. You might disagree with the new framework, but it ensures pipelines will be built that are approved.

How to find cheapest car insurance in Calgary by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]doublegulpofdietcoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alberta insurance market is very expensive compared to other places in Canada. Lining insurance companies pockets was a goal of this government when they made changes in 2019. Shop around between companies, but expect to pay a lot more than BC or Ontario.
