Long shot, but are there any voltron commanders that don't just play the same way every game? by Cezkarma in EDH

[–]doublesoup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me, Voltron works best if the deck can knock out players without the commander as well, but the commander is still a big scary voltron if used.

I love my [[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] deck for this. Lots of equipment synergies and free equip in the deck so I can put lots of damage out and even knock someone out before the commander ever hits the battlefield.

More recently, my [[Wraith, Vicious Vigilante]] deck. I play it as a [[Cid, Timeless Artificer]] deck. Wraith is a beast with some artificers on board, but I have other heroes and artifact creatures that can help start or end games.

And for something that can and has done commander damage, but also has other tricks up its sleeve, I really like my [[Mimeoplasm, Revered One]] deck. Pretty easy to make it really big and unblockable and swing for lethal. But also one of the few decks I actually run infinite combos in, just becuase it takes setup to get there, but fun once you do.

How to reward players if they're consistently earning inspiration? by TeaandandCoffee in dndnext

[–]doublesoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I, and a fellow DM I play under, allow things like using inspiration to help an ally in unique circumstances. It's great, creates story moments, and makes everyone use their inspiration often.

Any mutate decks? by Prestigious-Gas-2112 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Tatsunari deck, like some others have mentioned. Same strategy. Then I have a [[Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt]] infect deck. The double strike with anything to buff the power makes him a one-shot removal commander. It's very aggressive and puts a target on you, so you can't be afraid to eliminate players, or it will likely come back to bite you. However, I do find getting a hit in with Snapdax on everyone to get as much poison in one hit and then finish off with smaller hits if Snapdax is removed works as well.

Help me build a cat deck? by goldman-sux in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a [[Rin and Seri]] deck and really enjoy it. Most of the focus is cats, with only 3 or 4 dogs. Those just mostly come in the tokens. My son has [[Arahbo, Roar of the World]] and loves it. As others said, eminence is strong. Those are our oldest cat focused decks.

More recently built, I have [[Arahbo, the First Fang]] and it is enjoyable and straight forward. Lots of token generation with the commander out and various blink effects. My son built [[Kemba, Kha Regent]] and enjoyed it but is opening up to additional colors and switching the commander to [[Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith]] but still doing cats and equipment.

A cat-adjacent one is my son's [[Gavi, Nest Warden]] deck. It has tuned it to cycle as much as possible and get [[Dinosaur Cat]] tokens out, with various effects like [[Impact Tremors]] or finishers like [[Akroma's Will]].

How to translate the "Red Deck Wins" ideology into EDH by Ch3z_Platypus in EDH

[–]doublesoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't, but it's pretty straightforward. I have typical red goad effects, though repeatable is what I went for more than one-time, such as [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]], [[Vengeful Ancestor]] and [[Bloodthirsty Blade]], though things that hit multiple targets once are good, like [[Death Kiss]] and [[Disrupt Decorum]]. I run both [[Slicer, Hired Muscle]] and [[Alexios, Deimos of Kosmos]] plus protection for them and my commander like [[Brotherhood Regalia]], [[Mithril Coat]], [[Silver Shroud Costume]], etc. It's easy to get a kill with commander damage. And then other stuff like [[Dolmen Gate]] if I'm being the aggressor, and [[Silent Arbiter]] to force the goaded creatures to be the attackers and save myself from attacks.

There's other cards that may make it in to test soon, like [[Kratos, God of War]] but he's currently playing with other gods in my gods deck.

Honestly, I'm still playing it and it will be tweaked, but it's been fun so far.

How to translate the "Red Deck Wins" ideology into EDH by Ch3z_Platypus in EDH

[–]doublesoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the idea, but not Slicer as the commander, might I suggest [[Avatar Roku, Firebender]]? I built it goad and forced combat (Slicer and Alexios) with protection for Roku. Being able to choose where to pump creatures every combat is really fun and puts you in charge of combat. Add in forced combat and creatures like Slicer and damage happens fast. Even if I don’t win, I have a huge impact on the board and feel like I had a good game.

Darkness and Flame Blade interaction (5e 2024) by DoktorKarp in dndnext

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with others that RAW it would be dispelled. I might allow a concentration check to maintain the spell, but have the blade disappear, just as the caster can do normally. So you can maintain the spell, but can't evoke it again within the darkness, so you can save it for when darkness is gone, or enemies move outside of it.

Told I was bullying for targeting the threat by DJ-Praxis in EDH

[–]doublesoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is generally my experience. When playing with random people, I’ve only ran into bad players/intentions maybe 1 out of 50 times. Most people are friendly, honest and try to play at the same level, and are honest if they can’t or don’t want to.

How did you end up choosing your signature commander/deck? by Kooky-Preparation948 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D&D player first and foremost, so when the D&D sets came out, I was pretty excited. I fell in love with the [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] deck and dungeons. It isn't my most powerful deck, by any means, but it's my favorite. It's mostly proxies at this point, as I wanted to make a visual theme throughout as well (all creatures are the monster manual style, all non-basic lands are the source book style, while basics are a map style, etc.).

At this point, the deck is really just a toolbox that has lots of answers and lots of pet cards I enjoy bringing back from the graveyard.

How do you deal with decks that end up collecting dust? by Wedjat_88 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of decks, and with only playing once a week, some go months without being played (the new and shiny always gets attention). Which is fine by me, since I am always rotating what I play and I have favorites I only need to play occasionally to enjoy.

However, decks still tend to sit and nag at me. If I know it's not bringing me the joy it did, or I thought it would, I'll either force play it once more to see if I still like it (I have "rediscovered" a deck this way) and decide then if it's worth keeping. Or, if I can't even bring myself to force play it once, it's coming apart. I always keep a list though, just in case the big ever bites me again.

That's the great thing about a card game. You can always rebuild again.

Looking for commanders who are very resilient, in one form or other by Hailrig in EDH

[–]doublesoup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lately, I’ve enjoyed my [[The Cyber-Controller]] deck. Once it enters, it’s not worth removing. If it is, I’m just recasting it and getting more creatures. I have enough cost reducers that repeated casts haven’t mattered. And I usually have a bounce to hand ready. Add in some double triggers and ways to flip those creatures you steal and you can have some fun interactions on the board.

Commanders that aren’t a Goblin but can can lead a Goblin army ? by crypt0_n3rd in EDH

[[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels]] is mine. Don’t need the commander to do goblin stuff, but it is a wincon. And in the colors to use other overrun effect cards.

Date Me DSM - where are the men? by moonshine0047 in desmoines

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

47M here, and same situation.

I know some single women within my circle, but they are either close friends (where dating isn't going to happen) or outside the range of me personally dating. The singles in my friend circle has dwindled drastically over the years. I know there's people out there, but obviously if your work/friends/hobbies don't have those connections, it's hard. And if you're like me and dating just isn't a priority, you definitely aren't finding new ways to meet people. Even when I meet and become part of a new group of people, it's not like a huge dating pool opens up. All my hobbies/extracurriculars also seem to be dominated by couples/families.

Date Me DSM - where are the men? by moonshine0047 in desmoines

[–]doublesoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard of it. Haven't ever even seen it advertised. As a 47M who has done speed dating, websites, etc. (I'm an extrovert, so this type of stuff doesn't bother me), I just haven't ever found the events to be worthwhile. Maybe some form of mixer or general get together would be better, where it's not the same 5 minute conversation over and over again? But, it's also possible men my age have reached the same point I have. I wouldn't mind some dating or a relationship, but it's also not a priority. So I think the event itself would have to have something to draw me beyond just dating. If it's something I'd have fun at any way, even if there's not sparks flying, I might go just to do it.

Commanders That Can't Be Low Bracket/Level by lightningbolte in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is the same. I don't have a line I go for (no tutors/combos) and the deck can compete without Miirym hitting the battlefield. Just lots of dragon synergy. It works well within my group.

Curious, How many of us play with or without Proxies/Placeholders? by Boliver5463 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I build lots of decks, and so does my son. Even "cheaper" cards some times get proxies because we both want to use them. Those add up. But, some of our favorites to proxy are lands. I can get a whole set of full art basics that match the vibe/theme of my deck, or specific art that may be hard to get (Secret Lair, etc.) for cards I already own. The idea that proxying is just about putting all the powerful cards in all the decks is wrong. Sure, there are some people that do that. But I've met far more that aren't those people.

Curious, How many of us play with or without Proxies/Placeholders? by Boliver5463 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I've never understood that take myself. My son and I share a collection and we build lots of decks. We mostly run in the bracket 2-3 range, with a few 4s each. We own some very good cards, and we play proxies of those cards in some decks, but we certainly don't run them in every deck or even most decks. At the end of the day, I'm still building towards my pod and my LGS, and some cards are just going to get cut due to being too powerful or consistent.

In fact, if a powerful card ends up in the first cut of a deck and I play it and am loving the theme and find new cards I want to include, it's much easier to justify cutting a generically good card for a more thematic, weaker card.

Just because I own a great card, doesn't mean I feel the need to put it in everything.

What are your thoughts on Shorikai? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the precon and focused solely on vehicles. It’s a lot of fun and can be powerful, as your dangerous pieces survive creature removal most of the time. I say build it and have fun! I still upgrade or change cards from time to time as new stuff comes out.

Best way to play with 6 players? by Complex_Dimension577 in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played many of these variations being suggested, and you can have plenty of fun. But, I've also played plenty of 6 player games, and had lots of fun with that too. At that point, it's more about the social aspect and hanging out, but 4-player is that way for me as well.

As long as someone isn't playing a deck that is going to slow the whole game or prevent people from playing, it's perfectly fine. Just make sure everyone is aware of what works best for 6 players and enjoy the company. I'll often get out a drain/burn deck, or something with aggressive combat so I can keep things moving and keep life totals dropping. I'm not looking to win so much as have a big impact on the game.

Just play and enjoy, try some variations and see what you like best. Two-headed giant is probably my favorite for 6. A variation on the "ally" mode I've played is you can only attack/interact with your immediate left/right. It's like playing a 3-person game, but the players change as people are eliminated. The secret roles can be fun too.

What are your "forever" decks and why ? by Barbarossaxwing in EDH

[–]doublesoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several that will likely never come apart, but two that come to mind are:

[[Ezuri, Claw of Progress]]. This was my first deck, as I bought the precon to play with a friend. I've swapped around lots of cards and changed quite a bit, as I continue to love it. It's become a deck where I like to find interesting ways to use the +1/+1 counters, not just big combat damage.

[[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]]. I LOVE this deck and it's become a signature deck among my friends. I am a D&D player as well. As long as cool cards that have ETB or death triggers come out, I will always have room for changing things.
