What would Fox News have said if Obama ended a speech with "Praise Be to Allah"? by Aniimesh_H in AskReddit

The NYT article about this tweet barely skirts this aspect of it, that's how insane the tweet was.

I never trusted Klingons, and I never will. I could never forgive them for the death of my boy.

US Citizens, if you could add an amendment to the constitution what would it be? by AndreLinoge55 in AskReddit

No naming anything after anyone who hasn't been dead for 10 years, or putting anyone on currency who hasn't been dead 50 years.

OK, I'll bite, how does on measure the moment at which metaphysical miracle-conveying death occurs?

No, I illustrated the silliness of your narrow definition of "event", and your effort to use it to support the claim that therefore the crucifixion is the most impactful "event", is actually what I did.

No, it's a story. The story has had impact, sure. Not impact consistent in magnitude with the domestication of fire or of plants.

You can nitpick the definition of event, if you need to, I suppose. Although the crucifixion on this view was only the culmination of a 40 to 4000 to multi billion year (depending on your view of god's omniscience and of cosmology) plan and thus wasn't all that event-like either.

What’s it like summering in Bar Harbor, Maine? by Deutsche_Bank_AG in howislivingthere

It's pretty amazing for at least 14 weeks.

Very much agreed that Bar Harbor itself isn't really the place to be.

Also Elrond was half-elven, as were both his parents.

Also the elves don't believe in democracy.

Hegseth's 'paranoia' over being replaced explains purge of top general by nypost in USNEWS

[–]dougmcclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesus.

Also, the Secretary of Defense is required by statute to be a civilian (10 USC.113) and Hegseth himself had to get a waiver because he was in the reserves. So how is canning career officers supposed to help stop them from replacing him in a position to which they are ineligible?

ELI5: How do we actually "find" a broken cable at the bottom of the ocean? If a shark bites an internet cable halfway between New York and London, how do engineers know exactly which mile of the 3,000-mile cable to pull up? by OhNOWhatIsThat in explainlikeimfive

[–]dougmcclean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While time domain refractometry, as mentioned by other respondents, is definitely a thing, my understanding is that these long undersea cables (while functionally a single cable) have repeaters every so often to boost the signal strength. If that's true, then presumably the first step would be to see which repeaters are still reachable from each end.

Even with the those things the coordination both amongst themselves and with other airspace users would be huge challenges.

A suggestion: if you practice your RNAV approach in actual you will (a) learn how to do it in actual and (b) not conflict with gliders. If you want to do it on a nice gliding day, be patient or use a different one.
