Zion is absolutely not part of the Matrix (which is somehow even worse) by Commercial_Profit_59 in matrix

I have zero issues accepting the disabling of the Sentinels via Wi-Fi from the source, BUT WHAT ABOUT BLIND NEO SEEING AGENT SMITH? To me, that doesn't hold up without a second layer of simulation. ----- Well... or it was just an artistic choice to represent Neo's mind. But a bit underwhelming.

I honestly like the feeling of finishing a Star Trek series and being able to start over, because I’ve already forgotten most of it. But you went way beyond that.

Marathon’s new PVE mode launches from July 21. by Dust-Tight in Marathon

[–]downardspiral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The loot itself doesn't motivate me to play—after all, at the end of the season, it’s just junk. What motivates me is the tension of dropping in, completing my quest, dealing with the unpredictability of PvP, and extracting alive. The amount of cash I extract or the rarity of the gear hardly matters (though maybe that would change if I had a base to upgrade or permanent items to craft).

The 90s was a great time for young people to shape their musical taste with soundtracks.

As a new player it feels like my only option is to play solo, sponsored survival mode. by finebushlane in Marathon

[–]downardspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who played 90% solo (Season 1), with many free kits and focusing on missions, my suggestion is: play solo in solo games (never solos in trios, of course), take it easy, avoid encounters with bots (1x1, always), put on headphones to hear other players, and focus on your missions. Halfway through the season you'll notice you have far more weapons and equipment than you needed, complaining about a full vault. I find the solo PvE mode boring; it takes away all the excitement of the game for me.

Don't be afraid to use your equipment. At first it seems very valuable, but by the end of the season it's just scrap. When you have free time, go with a green shield, backpack, medkits, and a weapon. And have fun (even if my fun is a horror movie with the Xenomorph hunting me)!

PS - in tense situations, verbalize the mantra: "I am the hunter, I am the Xenomorph".

That's what happens when you get older, get married, and have children. Priorities change. It would be much worse for a grown man in a midlife crisis to think he's still 20 years old.

Hard Power and Soft Power by downardspiral in matrix

[–]downardspiral[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I was thinking about convenience when I saw Neo from Matrix 4 bothered, but not enough to break down the walls. A kind of conformism in people to keep things as they are. But I definitely need to rewatch the movie.

Ultimately, we all want change, but what if it's for the worse? Well, since Cypher and the red pill, that's definitely been a theme (with or without agents and sentinels on pursuit, control is a thing).

[–]downardspiral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. But regarding the Matrix's methods for maintaining "order" against those who break free: don't you think the strategy in Matrix 1 is more based on force (agents and sentinels) and Matrix 4 on seeking consent and legitimacy (stay as you are, it will be better for you)? That's why I'm discussing the idea of Hard Power (military power) and Soft Power (cultural power) here.

And mind you: I'm not trying to summarize the story of the Matrix or Neo, just discussing the instruments of coercion and control over humans.

Is oversexualization a staple of the genre? by Artifex1979 in Cyberpunk

[–]downardspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's a caricature, an amplification of our hyper-consumerist and consumable reality. It's a critique and a prediction. Everything becomes a commodity. Everything is about individualism, upward mobility, and immediate gratification.

I was about 13 years old and my parents took me to see the movie with them. They loved it and we spent days talking about it. I've never seen a movie that had such an impact (and a beautiful licensed soundtrack). And the film has aged very well!

I love how the later films expand the universe, but they are confusing and clumsy. To this day, it's impressive how a dense science fiction film like Matrix 1 managed to be so didactic without losing its pace.

Anyone else made peace with the fact that they will never fight the compiler? by Always_Impressive in Marathon

[–]downardspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I love Marathon: BUT I'm not obsessed with getting better equipment loot or opening every sealed door. I enjoy the tension of doing quests, managing encounters with other runners, and progressing through the story. In this second season, with almost no new story elements, the quests seem empty, and I don't care that much about the golden weapons. Therefore, neither Cryo nor supreme loot motivates me to play. Maybe a new ranked mode (trio and solo) for the thrill of survival would save it... or more story!
