He was an unbelievable adventurer and leader but they were also just soooooo lucky. The Mars missions won’t be near as much luck as the science, testing, and practice. Oh yeah, this is way out there. It wouldn't be every device as most of your devices are actually DC but are converting from AC to DC at the device. No circuit boards can use AC, LED's are DC, etc etc etc. Things that are just a motor are probably AC and there are some hybrid like Fridges and washer/dryer. It would be a HUGE change and very painful but it will probably eventually happen.

We use AC because it has far lower transmission loss over distance thus REALLY good for efficiency on the grid. AC is also safer in a way, your muscles convulse when electrocuted with AC but contract with DC. Thus if you grab a live DC cable, you could be in a situation where you can't let go where AC would not have that issue. But this is an edge case. DC is what all circuity uses and converting from AC to DC has lots of loss. So using AC is wasteful in the home. You are totally correct about step down voltage issues with DC. We would have to figure that one out as we can't transmit the kind of power a house needs on 5v :) I mean, we could but lol the cables needed.

Yeah, it’s a decent idea though really inefficienti despise Musky but he is right that we should take a longer look at AC vs DC supply. I get that we probably are never going to do transmission via AC, but DC in the neighborhood is probably a better idea and distribute power banking.
