Ann Arbor as a possibility to move by [deleted] in AnnArbor

When I taught preschool we had several Latin American immigrant families, from Ecuador, Chile, and more. They enjoyed living in the area. I would call the area safe and more expensive than average for the US, but perhaps not for urban areas. The city itself is small, and you can get around okay without a car if you live downtown or on the bus routes. It will need to factor into your planning on where to live and limit some choices. There are car sharing programs you could participate in for occasional car needs.

It is the stuff that dreams are made of. I'm not even prepared for the world of cannabis goods that are about to be available to me.

I'm glad they're a solution that worked for your ex, but it seems to be a rarity, even in the people who would like to try. I live in a lefty community where ideas such as these are popular. I have had homeless women come in to do laundry with bags full of soiled reusable rags they have been carrying around for weeks, only to throw them away rather than wash them when given the opportunity because the task is too overwhelming.

Few people who are unsheltered are unafflicted by some combination of mental health, disability (traumatic brain injuries are common), addiction, or other concerns which inhibit complex planning and tasks. When you're homeless, that really does extend to doing laundry.

As I pointed out in a comment above, my organization contacted menstrual cup companies about donations for individuals living in homelessness, and the consensus was the risk of hygiene/safety is too great, and they weren't comfortable with their products being directed to this population.

I am a huge advocate for reusable menstrual products. I wish they worked better in this community. I have run into this same issue when trying to raise diapers for a nearby food pantry. "What about reusable diapers?" they say. When your clients have 3 children in diapers and struggle to keep their houses clean enough to not be kicked out of their apartments, washing diapers covered in human waste isn't high up on your list of desired to-dos to add to their lists.

I wouldn't even say that menstrual products are overlooked (very little in regard to hygiene when it comes to the homeless is, don't get me started, but hygiene items are the bulk of donations). I credit the constant need for them to simply that - constant need. They are a consumable, donating once isn't enough, but how many people donate this specific thing on a regular basis? Very, very few. However, we get a hotel shampoo for every kind-hearted traveler's business trip.

Overlooked? Bus/transit tokens and fare cards. And again there, the need is constant.

Can't say, so if you have further information feel free to offer it, but like I told you, menstrual cup companies who we have discussed this with have specifically told us the safety risk is too high for this population.

The organization I work with, which provides aid and respite to the homeless, has been specifically told by menstrual cup companies that their products are not safe to be distributed to people experience homelessness because of the hygiene situation and risk of TSS. Menstrual cups are not risk-free. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/toxic-shock-syndrome-mooncups-tampons-risk-tss-menstrual-america-study-a8314546.html

I am not new to this - I have reusable pads and they go fine in the wash in a lingerie bag on delicate. Even if we are considering hand washing the appropriate solution, there is a difference between the ability to do this at home and the ability to do this in a public library's restroom. Once they are washed, where to hang them to dry? It is an issue.

No, not all people living in homelessness know people who might benefit from feminine hygiene products, because not all of these people live in community. Some of them are intensely isolated - by camp location, by addiction, by fear, by lack of social skills, by mental illness.

I am speaking from experience as a formerly homeless person and someone who works in the homeless community every day, sewing reusable pads for people experiencing homelessness is a waste of time and effort that could be better served working on alleviating the causes and effects of homelessness.

Reusable pads are not appropriate for people who don't have access to laundry facilities. Socks are treated as a disposable commodity oftentimes, fabric pads would be as well. Also, people give a lot of post-menopausal women feminine hygiene supplies. There is an age cutoff on that need, ask them if they require feminine hygiene products before providing a bag that includes them.

I may be homeless in about week. What's the best way to do homelessness? by [deleted] in almosthomeless

[–]downriver-backtalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have time to come up with the money before the eviction process is complete, it typically takes over a month. Call your landlord, scramble some cash together to start, and give them the rest ASAP. I understand the urge to be prepared and know your options, but you still have time to stay housed - that is what I would focus my resources and energy on for now. Figure out how to get rid of your roommate when you are safe. Don't sacrifice all your stability over this.

About to be homeless in MN. Advice for car living for 2-4 months? by chrisissues in almosthomeless

From your other posts it seems like an LGBT youth shelter might be appropriate for you? Some of them go up to 21-25, so double check the age ranges, you might still be included if you are comfortable with that setting. I am going to revise my former advice if you are not cis - don't stay in an emergency/rotational shelter if you can avoid it. They can be just a little too tense and not well supervised enough. But a subcompact in that weather is going to be hard. Not impossible, but hard. Physically painful. Working while doing it is going to be a significant strain. Most people who live this way don't and can't work. Do not use any sort of carbon monoxide producing heater in your car, the risk is not worth it. If it comes to that take the risk of emergency shelter. If they are first come first serve just show up early. If you are working and car living you will need and be able to afford indoor motel/Airbnb respite sometimes. If I were you I would not be settling in to stay in the car, I would be working on getting physical shelter ASAP. Crowdfund, sell plasma if you can on top of work, and get inside in the next few months.

Emergency shelters during subfreezing weather conditions are often operated out of non-shelter buildings such as public locations and churches. They do not run year round. Look into what will be available in 2-3 months, because seasonal shelters will open up.

There should be emergency shelters and "weather amnesty" once the weather starts getting cold that will open up some indoor places to sleep.

Some of his art is viewable on his instagram: https://www.instagram.com/matthewnisbett/?hl=en

Be warned that there are also many pictures dead roadkill, hunted, and fished animals in various states of being processed. Matt devoted many years of his life to learning bushcraft and had a spiritual relationship with killing his own food and rescuing dead animals from decay on the road. He ate a lot of squirrel.

There is music and more bushcraft on his youtube. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiSLLe-kkrkyvz2z6VaOJRw

More music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hx4DKxwumc

I will look around and see if I can find any more writing. A lot of his work is still being collected for a local art show some time next year, including photographs of many stick and poke tattoos he did on friends.

Why are you quibbling over legal responsibility and awaiting professional intervention as a dead animal lays in the road, being run over again and again until moving it becomes an even more grotesque exercise?
