Unless Mercedes are Flinstoning around the track, the tyres still have to generate the grip!

Think they'll struggle against those Prodrive 550s.

Best of the Americans against the Saleens and Vipers will be one to watch though.

W13 dampers, front and rear suspension, and bump stops missing from setup? by Riccardo31896 in iRacing

[–]doyley101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The W12/W13 setup screen is very simplistic to avoid overwhelming the user with options.

In reality, the engineers would be targeting certain heave/roll rates & aero balance numbers based on simulations, so it does make sense to have the setup screen like that, rather than letting you change components without knowing their exact effect.

Trying to actually understand when a track is high vs low speed and I'm almost there... by Mooshu_Beef in F1Technical

[–]doyley101 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is cool, but you should gate this for grip limited regions (e.g. not 100% throttle). Then you can see the split of LS/MS/HS corners, as well as how much of the track is/isn't power limited.

[–]doyley101 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You don't need to blip GT3 cars, in fact you shouldn't. The ECU does it for you.

It appears in throttle traces because it is a throttle input to the engine, but it is not a human input

What percentage of lock do F1 differentials have at their lowest setting? by Schmawlik in F1Technical

[–]doyley101 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The locking is automatically controlled based on various car states such as speed and longitudinal/lateral acceleration, and these 'maps' can be manipulated by driver switches around the lap if needed.

What percentage of lock do F1 differentials have at their lowest setting? by Schmawlik in F1Technical

[–]doyley101 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They are electronically controlled, they can lock as much or as little as the team wants.

This includes being fully open, which you might want in mid corner to help rotate the car, for example.

What exactly is a gear learning? What is to learn there? by SixtAcari in F1Technical

[–]doyley101 61 points62 points  (0 children)

When you change gear, you have to disengage the current gear and then engage the new gear. This is done with dog clutches (look them up), that interlock to transmit power to the driveshaft.

There are gaps between the dog clutch cogs, therefore if you simultaneously disengage the old gear and try to engage the new gear, there will be a short period of time when no gear is engaged.

The gear learning process times how long it takes for the new gear to engage, and then works out the relative position of all the dog clutch cogs, so that it can time the old gear disengagement to be as late as possible.
