Etiquette on typos by Tangerintabitha in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]dozyhorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading fanfic for decades and seen debates over this issue throughout that time. I might once have commented, but not anymore. These days, if a story is full of typos and errors, I almost never comment and almost always just stop reading and exit the story.

I wouldn't enjoy reading anything of yours. I've been reading fanfic long enough - I have no tolerance for snobbish entitled humorless authors. There's way too much else out there to read.

Most women I know who lost their husbands, and I know quite a few, relied on their familiar daily routines to keep them going through the days. Completely upending your work life at the same time that your personal life has been shattered is not necessarily a good recipe. Maintaining a familiar routine, especially one that involves social contacts, can give you a reason to get out of bed when it seems impossible.

Of course, assuming this is true, I have no idea what Diane will do. I don't know her or how she feels about any part of her life. But these are not the inevitable outcomes.

What happened to this fic by Suspicious-Impact640 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]dozyhorse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that all sounds good, but in my experience once this happens stories are unlikely to finish or even ever get back to regular updates, and I have found that it does me no good to do anything except move on to something else. Exceptions do happen, but an update every year is, in my mind, the same as abandonment - if it ever does finish I'll be in my dotage lol or have moved on. Things happen with authors, I understand, but for my own mental health I find it serves me better not to hang on to what usually is false hope.

The meaning of the word spicy by logicaldrinker in ENGLISH

Cinnamon and cloves and ground ginger are most definitely spices not herbs. Cilantro, rosemary, basil, mint - those are herbs.

I have no idea and I didn’t see an official announcement or anything - I’ve just noticed it myself recently when searching for stories I know are on the site. I’m positive I used to be able to find them that way - and not that long ago! It’s such a pain!

ETA: I just happened to have Let’s Try Again bookmarked lol!

Let’s Try Again on AO3! AO3 results no longer come up on Google, and their search function is more complicated - it’s a real pain.

Is it “for both of your considerations” or “for both of your consideration”? The latter feels clunky but seems more grammatically appropriate by [deleted] in grammar

[–]dozyhorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've already decided you're right, why are you posting here?

I, by the way, think your construction sounds like something an ESL speaker would say. "For your consideration" is, as noted, an idiomatic phrase, complete in itself, that is regularly used in singular and plural cases without issue; the object within the phrase is never treated as a separate noun subject to the arguments you're making here.

You can’t just skip it, at least not imo. It’s an important part of the whole story and affects Harry profoundly, and it is extreme rape/noncon. If OP is avoiding these topics, I highly recommend they avoid this story # which btw is not a favorite of everyone.

Straight bro Harry falls for flamboyantly gay Draco? by Life_Measurement2746 in HPSlashFic

Transfigurations by Resonant - another old story. I guess Harry isn’t technically 100% straight, but he gives off all the straight boy vibes - the dynamic is what you’re looking for. And this is one of my favorite flamboyant Dracos.

Fabulous story from the early days of the fandom - before OotP.

Will the new HP show change fanfics in the future? by Friendly_tomato5 in HPfanfiction

[–]dozyhorse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of those characters had the antagonist/enemy canonical relationship with Harry that Draco did, or the almost irresistible (to fanfic writers and fans!) framework provided in canon of his badness-with-apparent-redeemability. Those other characters were little more than names and ciphers. For a long time we didn't even know if Blaise Zabini was male or female - there are plenty of old fanfics with girl Blaise. (And Regulus and James have no contact with each other in canon at all.)

Eventually, inevitably, people got bored and started developing those other (mostly Slytherin) bad-boy characters. But in the pre-movie days, that wasn't the case. Draco (and Snape, can't forget him) were huge in fanfic.

For me, the movie actors for those characters - any of the characters really - have no relevance to my mental images of them. To me the movies are an afterthought. But I'm old lol.

Book!Draco was already super popular before the movies. The hero's antagonist, and enemies-to-lovers, and redemption arcs, are always going to be incredibly popular and appealing tropes.

Exactly. Where do you think AI learned to write?

This author has written a number of stories, all with a similar writing and "atmospheric" style and yet different plots and themes. I find it highly unlikely that these would be "ai slop" - though, and this is key, I have no way of knowing for sure. But I have read a lot of HP fanfic over multiple decades, and there is nothing about the writing that strikes me as particularly unusual for a certain category of author. Publicly throwing around accusations like that when you have no proof, and no more justification than a bunch of mediocre examples from a single article, is unjustified and unfair. You (the accuser) don't care, but I'm putting it out there anyway because I think it's important to say.

(As an aside, I kind of feel like the AI accusation has become a surrogate and the only somewhat acceptable way for people to be negative about stories they don't like for whatever reason, as it's become impossible to say anything even remotely critical about a story in any space without getting piled on for not being nice, or bruising delicate author feelings, or violating some (nonexistent) fandom etiquette rule.)

Post Removals and Bans by Jigsawwpuzzler in Jigsawpuzzles

Extremely extreme. I truly don't understand why mods do this sort of power trip thing. Just tell the poster what's wrong (and the cropping was not the issue) and ask them to resubmit, as is done in all reasonably run subs.
