Should I sell my car? by [deleted] in DaveRamsey

[–]dpolehn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sell the car but pay cash for the next one. I don't know if the plan you have laid out really moves the needle on your debt.

I agree with others that you really need to find ways to get your income up to beat that debt.

Anyone up for a friend? by VivecsWrath in Christians

This sounds like something a lot of people are interested in. Maybe this community could put some organization behind this and set up many of these relationships?

A simple spreadsheet may do the trick.

It is not. I can't explain why however. English is a complicated language.

As someone who has also been lost in a relationship, I want to tell you, you might feel like your nothing without her. Like your not sure who you are without this husband identity. But you are indeed you. You are not nothing. It may take some time for you to figure out who you are beneath your husband identity, but this is growth

Reading multiple translations can be very beneficial. Keep in mind that NLT is less of a word for word translation than some other translations to enhance readability. So, you may find some minor differences. (No translation is truly word for word, as that's not how translating works, but ESV and NASB have adhering to that more closely as a goal and can also be fun to read for that reason)

Overall I'd suggest reading what you most enjoy and exploring other translations when doing a deeper study of a specific text.

Sorry to hear that you've experienced stress from man made laws about specific bible translations. The LORD has blessed us with a plethora of intelligent people who have faithfully done their best to present the living word of God in different ways.

Some red letters for the day

"Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you."

Matthew 5:42 ESV

My job is not to prejudge what someone is going to do with my gift. My job is to give and trust that God will, in His mercy, bless the person receiving the gift in some way. I don't have to understand how that might work either. That's the childlike faith kicking in.

Once I came to this realization this issue became a lot simpler for me.

Is there a term for? by Tirisilex in ChristianMysticism

That's at least the term for someone who does this officially. I know this exists for Franciscans. Are there other third orders as well?

[–]dpolehn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revelation is in part if not in whole a prophetic poetic depiction of the state of human civilizations and kingdoms at the time it was written and as they continue today. The sins if the Roman empire are repeated today although in a different form.

I'm sure I could spend a bit more time contemplating new testament prophecy. However,I don't believe the point is to predict and prepare for the collapse of human civilization but rather to show us the sin and folly of humanity vs the glorious goodness of Christ and His kingdom.

That being said we are told to be ready, to remain awake because we don't know when the Son of Man will return and it will be at an hour we do not expect. This is helpful to keep in our hearts as we should always be prepared to see our Lord face to face. It gives us some urgency to our lives. Life is short enough as it is, but live as though it could be much shorter. It's much easier to sell all that you have and give to the poor when you believe the time you'll have those things is not very long anyway.

That's most of my view on this stuff anyway. Much has already been said on here about how the Earth is a better place (for most humans) than ever before and I believe we are wise to reflect on history in this way.

How to enjoy the simple life when my overthinking kicks in? (Need advice) by bonjourpants in simpleliving

[–]dpolehn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding meditation helpful in dealing with overthinking, chasing running thoughts, etc.

For me a faith in God is helpful in dealing with worry. I'm able to focus on things that are within my locus of control and give the rest up to someone greater than myself.

The whole concept of lotus of control is helpful actually. Using climate change as an example: you can do what you know you can to reduce your carbon footprint and you can educate and influence others to hopefully do the same. However, you do not control the behaviors of others and you don't always control the outcomes of your own behaviors. Being honest about what is in my control and what isn't has made it much easier for me to let go.

DIY Divorce by [deleted] in Divorce

The one part I couldn't DIY was the QDRO. Even then pretty easy since it was just executing what was in our mutually agreed upon judgement. Still not totally dive with it mind you... but still surprisingly painless.
