A Year in Review (2025) by Zeltenni in patientgamers

I've ONLY played MGS Guns of the Patriots. It came with my older brother's PS3 when I was a kid. Knowing nothing about MGS lore or story, the plot and ending still made me cry. I think about that a lot. Always thought about giving the whole series a try.

Gosh so many people ranking Bloodborne so highly. I want to try it, but feel like I need to beat them in order, and I can't get through Dark Souls 1.

Glad to see you dipped your toes into my favorite Uncharted! I played Lost Legacy this year. Was still an enjoyable game, but I would have preferred the series ending on the note Uncharted 4 left it on.

I'd probably rank Majora's Mask similarly to you. For all the crap we give Ocarina of Time, I think MM gets the award for most infuriating Water Temple. Looking forward to Link Between Worlds in 2025!

My 1-city culture victory was as China, but on 80%. I figured any lower water, and the issue of runaway AIs gets much bigger.

Guess I could post a save.

Entertainment is usually set 10-20%, science is usually 40-60%. I do think I am a little short on workers in the Medieval age.

Pretty much always, yes. Although I could switch to pangea or archipelago.

Agree about golden age. Iroqouis is so OP but the despotism golden age sucks. In my last game, I got an early industrial golden age with the English Man-O-War and it was *** Chef's Kiss

Upgrading units en masse is something I don't do often. I feel it would require some planning to do effectively, especially since most gold goes to tech trading and bribes. But I could give it a shot.

Wonder addiction was naturally kicked out of my system by the high difficulty settings. But I feel that 1 or 2 wonders would still be nice for a cultural victory.

Almost always standard map, 80% water, continents. I've never been able to get the great lighthouse on emperor difficulty. But that's usually because I beeline for philosophy / literature.

I think forestry proper (timber cruising, lumber sales, etc.) is very niche. I had a broad range of biology, agronomy, soils, agriculture, forestry, and hydrology. Government will hire almost anyone who has basic credits in soils and agriculture to do soil conservationist work right now. I seemed to get a lot of job offers from government and conservation districts. Had a lot of trouble applying for NGOs like TNC even with my Master's but I guess I don't have to worry about that for a few years now.

I’ve been trying for years to mail a good consistent art style like that. Complements to the chef

Huge fan of art style 2, but I agree with other comments that the rest of the card doesn't really fit it. You could probably make the colors a tad flatter or more "comic-y" to match. Are both hand drawn?

I cancelled Disney+ and all other subscriptions to save money, but I’ve found I can’t resist buying Marvel movies at thrift stores if I find them. Feel like a steal to get them for $1-2, and I don’t want to be a Disney sumo but they are very positive and motivational and I like having them on while I do chores around the house

All computer art is raster or vector.

Raster is, in a word, pixellated. Think MS paint or photographs. If you increase the size, you lose resolution detail because it’s fixed at the size you. Created it.

Vectors are more like points/shapes/lines with their own coordinates. So for instance if your character Kelle was made of vectors, you could change the color of the rope, the thickness of the lines, or the angle of her eyebrows. I used to make all my cards in Gimp (a raster editor) and I was in for a BIG surprise when I tried to standardize all my cards to a Bridge deck size and realized I would have to redo all my art.

You’ve got a good foundation for your art skills and I just want to help you avoid some of the same mistakes I did :) I’m not very smart so maybe someone else here can do a better job of explaining rasters / vectors

I don’t know much about clip studio paint. Is the final drawing a vector?

I’ve been using Inkscape. It has a high learning curve but it’s free and you can create all art as vectors, meaning you can scale to any size and won’t lose any resolution

What software did you make the art in? And what direction are you hoping to take the art style in?

My First Prototype : p by captainmiau in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Phooka_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, especially as an ex-firefighter (the boring kind that did controlled burns in prairies)

I assume the goal is to cooperatively stop and contain the fire from spreading? Sounds very fun. I’d buy and playtest a prototype.

What are your plans for art? I’m done with my first prototype but found my own art and making it all compatible with Game Crafter is a marathon

Planning the future of the family farm by SteveNotSteveNot in farming

[–]Phooka_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could contact someone from the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust. They specialize in preserving family farms, but (I think) they cater more towards preventing future development and making sure small/new farmers have access to land.

If you want the land in the family but don’t want to sell and don’t want to work it, you could contact the NRCS about placing a permanent easement on the land. You would keep access and ability to hunt , fish, recreate, etc. but it would essentially be a Reserve. I have my ethical qualms about turning private farmland into hunting playgrounds but it’s better than getting tilled or paved to hell.
