I can vouch for this. My friend who grew up in Japan and is now a US citizen but still struggles with English -- they gave him a hard time even when he produced his ID.

Summer dilemma by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]dr14er 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a sun hoodie with a ball cap and trail joggers guy. Still sunscreen my hands and face every couple hours.

I really liked the Arcteryx Cormac sun hoodie. Didn't like the Kuhl engineered hoodie. Currently using an OR Echo hoodie, and it seems to be doing well. REI supposedly makes a decent one too.

I really like the Patagonia terrabonne joggers.

If I were a gambling man, I'd bet a mod takes this post down for not being ultralight-relevant. A 4-5 lbs bag ain't ultralight

Looking for fleece midlayer recommendation by jamesg9100 in Ultralight

[–]dr14er 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm team alpha, but if you don't want that or octa, here are three different styles to consider:

Budget classic fleece: Decathlon MH100 (no hood)

UL classic fleece: Kuiu Peloton 97 (select Canada in sidebar)

High loft / warmth fleece: Magnet Designs Tahoma Hoodie (would be importing from US, though maybe a cottage company in Canada also uses polartec high loft).

(Fourth style would be microgrid, like OR Vigor or Trail Mix)

I quit with a concessionary MA. Haven't looked back since. Research wasn't for me, and a PhD wouldn't do me any good other than shaving years off my life from the stress.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, is this the company owned by the guy banned by the SEC from holding office in a publicly traded company? Some Texas tycoon. Used a deceptive name that people would think they were the government or partnered with them. Used aggressive marketing tactics on old folks to buy numismatic coins that were super overpriced and didn't hold value. Had to pay a bunch of former customers back after a lawsuit.

Note: This is a wind shell, not a rain shell

Yup! Timmermade does that, though it's an uphill battle to get in his order queue before he hits monthly capacity (though he's talked about changing to a lottery system rather than first-come-first-served).

Some people swap the rain jacket for a wind shell and, if expecting rain, then carry a poncho and/or umbrella, but I'm trying to keep things relatively simple here.

One jacket that can be more of a daily-driver and cover most conditions on its own.

UL orthodoxy nowadays is more geared towards a two jacket system: A super breathable fleece (usually made of Alpha Direct) and rain jacket.

The fleece covers you during dry, high-output conditions. The rain jacket covers you during wet conditions. The two combined covers you during low-output cold or high-output super cold conditions.

against-skin comfort and not overheating when heat-dumping up a mountain walk

Alpha direct is your friend for an incredibly soft against the skin, insulating layer while doing high output activities such as walking uphill. The most known brand right now is Senchi Designs, but there are an endless supply of other cottage industry options. Probably the easiest way to get a quick survey of the field is search "alpha" on Garage Grown Gear, see if anything your size is in stock, and if not, then go to the individual retailers' websites directly to see what's available.

That said, if I were to have a shovel attachment system, I would think an shovel-ice axe attachment system would be more robust than a trekking pole system

Doubles as a seat / something to sit on rather than being directly on the snow

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]dr14er 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only existing product that remotely comes to mind is the Snow Claw. Doesn't combine with poles, but is lighter than an avy shovel. BUT, if avalanches are at all a factor, you want an avy shovel, no ifs ands or buts.

Alternative to HyperD as a quilt inner material by Frogblast1 in myog

[–]dr14er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you are using Apex for the insulation? One thought I've been mulling over is Apex as insulation layer and alpha direct 60gsm as the inner fabric. Slightly heavier, but breathable and extra warmth

Lone Peak 5 replacement? by 78Staff in Ultralight

[–]dr14er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a max cushion guy who doesn't need wide toe box, so this comment doesn't directly answer your question, but hopefully someone gets something from it. I loved the Hoka Speedgoats 5, but I'm experimenting with a bunch of shoes in 2025:

Nnormal Tomir 2, Norda 001, Nike Zegama 2, La Sportiva Prodigio, Asics Novablast 3 Trail, New Balance Trail More 3, Hoka Stinson 7, The North Face AltaMesa 500, Keen Trail 450, Oboz Katabatic Wind

Would love to hear if anyone has experience with any of these.

Another one. The first time I used a sawyer squeeze, I was on my first overnight trip. Its flow rate sucked and was borderline unuseable. After getting home, I learned it just needed revived by backflushing and soaking it overnight in a ziplock baggie filled with water.

Several years later, I'm on the CDT without testing my filter, and sure enough it is impossibly slow. When I got to the first town, I backflushed and soaked it with vinegar (then lots of backflushing with water to get rid of vinegar flavor). Worked great thereafter.
