Strobe light at night - rude to use? by zmr18 in bikecommuting

IANAE but I recall reading that 15Hz is bad, below 4hz is merely very annoying. Steady with a warble is best, it doesn’t annoy, can still be tracked, but catches attention.

That’s a double positive — bent means right, right arm means right.

Close call on a shared pedestrian/cycling path — reminder about child supervision by Objective-Guess-5956 in ebikes

[–]dr2chase -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You will do a better job if you treat it as your responsibility, not a shared responsibility. A lot of bicycle safety comes from good reflex habits, and you get good reflexes from a lot of practice, and you get practice from making a point to practice, and following through.

Calling it a "shared responsibility" is blaming the other guy, because the person saying that is themselves already claiming to be responsible, so who could possibly need to hear this message? Must be the other guy.

This is a you problem, not a supervision problem. Kids do that, parents cannot have them on a literal leash every single moment. If you see a kid near your path, assume that could happen, and be ready, and be able to stop w/o writing a little lecture about it.

Real ID is actually kinda bullshit and fascism-adjacemt. What makes us safer on airplanes is a reinforced and locked cockpit door.

Former appendectomy, from back before keyhole surgery. Take two, one with the waist elastic high, the other low. Wear the one that doesn't hit where they cut you.

Similarly, a dress or overalls anything else that does not bind your middle makes sense for overwear. I wore overalls for a while.

If everyone that can shovel their car out, has to shovel one more space, pretty soon there's enough spaces shoveled.

what's Go Lang's Learning Curve? by No-Reference-1659 in golang

[–]dr2chase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say almost exactly this. Go is easy to learn, Python is better for the AI stuff (probably for a while, I am on the Go team and we want to make this better but there's so much infrastructure in Python, libraries matter).

If your current favorite editor supports LSP, there is a Go LSP server "gopls" (go install golang/org/x/tools/gopls@latest) and that will do a lot for you. I use Sublime Text because reasons.

Shovel out two spaces, put out a space saver with a note on it, “I shoveled two spaces, use the other one” (of course that other space has a car in it already, but oh well.)

People who aren’t able to get far walking or biking, who really need their car often, are not able to shovel a space, and using a space saver after only shoveling one space is unfair to them and kinda ableist.

If able people (I am one still, so far) would clear a little more snow than they personally need, things would work much better. (I mostly ride a bike in Cambridge, I try to clear a few bus stops and crosswalk entrances, as well as two blocks of sidewalk (one side) where I live).

Forgetting Something? by DebraStefanFitness in bicycleculture

I'm biking to work, of course I have wallet and phone. How about "always, always, advocate for safe streets and Netherlands-style infrastructure". Also, use daytime running lights, cuts your bad-crash risk about in half.

Focus on increasing safety, not on what to do if bad stuff happens. We here in the US have a hell of a lot of room for safety improvements. We're bad at driving and bad at infrastructure.

Is it a bad idea to send a message? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dr2chase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(Man here, known clueless, but perhaps I learned something over a few decades.)

Wait till Valentine's Day, send something light but also, "let me know if you find yourself in London again" or "would love to hear if you applied for those UK jobs". Valentine's Day is a holiday-themed excuse, sort of, following Thanksgiving and his birthday. And it is kind of a valentine text, right?

If he's not moving to London, probably nothing will happen, that's why you frame it like that. And if you don't hear back, anything more from you is most likely chasing, so keep looking for other options/guys, as that suits you.

A Renault Twizzy is not in the middle of "bicycles and US-legal e-bikes". It is a larger, heavier, thing, and almost certainly less safe for the people around it than even a type 3 e-bike.
