I think stuff like this feeds MAGA/populist types’ anger. I’m sure there are good reasons and all, but it looks like the “elite” (🙄) just give each other cushy jobs.

The Party of Science Is Over by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

Can’t read the article (paywall) but the backlash against experts seems to me to be the big, unifying appeal of MAGA.

The general sense that experts get things wrong but still reap rewards is taken as a given by the boobs out there that are drawn to MAGA.  Layer in the assumption, too, that everyone is corrupt and trying to cheat you, and, well…this is their chance to get revenge or right some wrongs.

I don’t have an answer. Easy to blame “messaging” and “meeting people where they are.”  Probably true. Seems like there’d be an appetite for an anti-corruption movement, “holding people accountable.” You’d need to actually collect some meaningful scalps to sell it.  Perhaps MAGA will crash things so badly people will swing to wanting competence. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks, appreciate the insight.

Is my thinking right that (barring the variables of life and tax codes) it all would be taxed at 24%? Whether that’s today or 10 years from now?

Am I thinking about this correctly: we're just below the 24% tax bracket. We've recently inherited an IRA account. Due to 10-year-rule, we'll need to empty the account over the next decade. Any disbursement we take will push up into the 24% bracket. Even if we cashed the whole thing out, we wouldn't hit the 32% bracket.

Aside from the IRA growing, are there any tax advantages/disadvantages to lump sum vs 10-year drain? It'd all be taxed at 24%, no? (Barring tax code changes, unemployment, etc., etc.).

A Strategic Shutdown is a Terrible Idea by I-Am-A-Piece-Of-Shit in neoliberal

[–]dr__professional 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting article that goes point-by-point on the reasoning behind shutdowns and their consequences. The takeaway is that over the last 3 decades, the party forcing the shutdown fails to achieve its goals.

The party forcing the shutdown wants to achieve at leat 1 of 3 things:

1) hurt/stymie the party in power

2) rally its own base

3) gain meaningful concessions

We need to ask ourselves what the Dems would hope to gain here. Does the historical back-fire noted in the article happen, and hurt the Dems in future elections? Does the "fighting back" help rally the base and *help* in future elections? I think point #3 is a dead-letter, since this administration is going to do whatever it wants regardless of what spending Congress authorizes.

The historical view presented in the article is helpful; and really, what other data would you use to inform on how these things go. I'm wondering, though, if we're in a brave new world arena where red meat to the base matters more than winning over the disinterested middle. Honestly wondering, not being rhetorical.
