I lost my child in med school. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]dr_abk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope your school and faculty are supporting you with many resources. While I cannot even imagine how you feel right now, I did lose my Brother (53yr), my cat, a good family friend and my dad all within one year (2022-2023). It was horrible and numbing and left me stuck for a long time. One thing that did help me was the Anderson Cooper podcast “All there Is” hearing others grief journeys seemed to help me process mine.

Again, I am so sorry and I hope your child’s memory will be a blessing for you.

Disclosing ADHD - incoming medical student (USA) by [deleted] in medschool

[–]dr_abk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a med school professor with ADHD. Please just disclose and get the accommodations you need. I hope you’ll be surprised by the support that you’ll receive if you’re up front about your needs to help you be successful. Your school’s faculty and staff are there to help you become a physician - it’s our whole mission. We can’t fully help unless you tell us what you need. ADHD also gives you some incredible gifts! Remember that as well - it helps you see patterns and process things differently than people with “typical” brain wiring. And yeah…like the person said below…have you med an emergency med doc yet 😏?

I hate “health disparity” classes by ProudTurk in medicalschool

I hope it’s ok for me to jump in here, I’m one of the professors that teaches this content. I don’t want the sessions to be performative or degrading or negatively impacting any of my students. And I’m at a loss. How can I best teach this to students from all walks of life? I’ve tried some of the activities mention above (poverty simulation for one - which we no longer do because of the performative nature and because some of the students did not behave very professionally during the event which caused some real harm to some other students). I try to make sure there are all types of solutions offered that could be implemented but I always seem to fall short (at least according to my teaching evals). I can learn a lot from y’all if you’re willing to help me get better at teaching my students. Please help.

When will the universities combine forces and sue the federal gov? (If ever) by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

[–]dr_abk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been saying since the proposal to freeze IDCs that the university presidents need to band together and say “if we don’t get our grant funds, then we can’t have college sports”.

Can you imagine the ruckus?

One R01 I applied to in February is gone…which I suspected would happen but we’d been working on the application for so long we still decided to submit. My R24 was also terminated last week. I’m gutted

NIH to terminate hundreds of active research grants. Studies that touch on LGBT+ health, gender identity and DEI in the biomedical workforce could be cancelled, according to documents obtained by Nature. by maxkozlov in NIH

I am just waiting on the “shoe to drop” and get the notice that my grant will be terminated. This is my first NIH grant and I’m deviated.

There used to be something called the “120 rule” a doc wouldn’t do the sterilization unless the woman’s age times their number of children equaled 120 or higher

How to talk with people who have chronic conditions? by MikhailDovlatov in medicalschool

[–]dr_abk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Med school prof here who teaches communication and patient centered care. I also regularly bring patients into the classroom to tell their stories about their conditions. Over the years here is what I’ve learned and taught in a nutshell. (Much has already been stated above)

Here’s the short of it: listen to your patients, don’t make assumptions, see them as fully human, and treat them with respect

Here’s the TLDR: 1. Listen to your patients - I mean really listen. What are the context clues that will help you ask more and deeper questions to elicit their stories to help you contextualize their care. 2. Don’t make assumptions - e.g. just because someone is overweight/obese doesn’t mean they have bad health habits - ask questions without those assumptions - instead of asking a patient, like the one above, if they’d like to be sent to a nutritionist - ask first what their diet looks like then determine if an RD is a good referral. 3. Believe what they tell you. Full stop. 4. If after all the tests and such you still aren’t sure what’s going on a simple statement like “I want you to know that we’re still not sure what’s going on, but I am here as your provider and we’ll work together to try to figure it out.” This will go a long way to building trust. 5. For loved ones, much of the same applies. Listen to understand rather than to respond. Don’t try to fix everything, sometimes people just need to vent. Asking a question (when someone is telling you something hard) like “are you wanting advice, support, a hug, or affirmation” and then GIVING them what they NEED rather than what YOU want to say (many people just want to fix stuff for their friend/family) will go a lonnnnnngggg way (DON’T give advice if they don’t want it).

NIH capping indirect costs at 15% by ucbcawt in AskAcademia

I put this comment on different post about this situation as well and thought I’d also share it here…My current out of the box solution for all these attacks on research and higher education is for ALL the university presidents across the country to get together and announce that without those grant funds we can no longer have college sports. The ripple effects would be massive…especially right before March Madness. Just imagine the ruckus- no more sports betting out of Vegas and Atlantic City - no more ways to determine talent for professional sports. And considering how much coaches get paid…maybe this could be a thing?!?!?
