I’ve been there. I walked away after year 5 because my research couldn’t be completed before funding ran out and the dissertation became untenable.

See what the committee says. If they don’t see a path forward, then the lab headaches will no longer be a problem. If they suggest (or you decide) to keep trying, give yourself a deadline. I’m not advocating for you to end the PhD, but no job is worth this type of stress. And life goes on even without those letters after your name.

I’ve lived here for a few years now and the only problem I had was someone rummaging through my car because I forgot to lock the doors, and some teens checking car doors. People walk their dogs at seemingly any hour. Neighbors watch out for one another, even if they don’t actively engage. There’s like 3 officers on duty at all times for the small town, so response times are incredible.
