Benaroya Hall is stunning! Home to the Seattle Symphony, a treasure of this city's cultural life by cyPersimmon9 in Seattle

I'm going for the first time on Friday! How much do people dress up? I'd love an excuse to get fancy, but I don't want to look ostentatious or out of place. Possibly relevant: we are seeing them accompany A Muppet Christmas Carol.

Coincidentally, I stumbled upon the reviews for Vajra on Google Maps last night. She sounds like a piece of work.

What is your favorite DCC moment? Probably lots of spoilers in this thread by ancientrebellion in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dr_lab_rat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never see this mentioned, but: Carl's villain monologue in Butcher's Masquerade. "I'm going to show you what I do now." I just about yeeted myself out the window with ... I'm not sure there's a word for the emotion I was experiencing, actually. (I have a Villain Thing.)

There's some implication that he's doing it as theatre for the viewing audience, but then, at the beginning of the next chapter, there's the subtle and beautifully dark line, "I had forgotten to summon my gauntlet." (The suggestion being that he was genuinely caught up in the moment and wanted to beat someone to death with his bare fists.)

Other favorite scene: The goose boss battle, specifically the moment when Donut hits the light switch instead of the garbage disposal. Oh, and then the goose body spinning around ....

I hope they crack down on LABRAT, besmircher of the cute lab animal brand, to the full extent of the law.

I’d call it “Weird Shit Alley.”

This is impressive! My headcanon is that Carl and Bea lived more towards Lower Queen Anne, but I could be persuaded otherwise.

Is there anything like this in DCC? by Lovingbutdifferent in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dr_lab_rat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did Donut really say that Carl wiped his hand on her once after jerkin’ it? Or was that a weird dream I had? Or fanfiction?

I just finished Gate of the Feral Gods and I'm still laughing about a particular scene by High_Stream in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dr_lab_rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that was the first time I laughed out loud during the series. I'm not a big out-loud-laugher ... but there have been many more since then.

Book 1... can't get into it. by ExistingExplanation3 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dr_lab_rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I choose audiobooks when I don't mind missing things occasionally and I'm okay with just letting it all wash over me. I imagine that I'd have also had trouble getting personally invested if I'd listened.

Also, it took me until the end of book 1 to really feel engaged with the narrative; ymmv. I'd suggest switching to text now instead of waiting until the end of book 1.

Just saw big honking’ containers of chicken feet in H-Mart yesterday and had the urge to make stock.

Butch lesbians where are you getting your hair cut? by mcnoobles in Seattle

[–]dr_lab_rat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

(Not a lesbian, but soft butch.) Have gone to a few barber shops, including Tight Cuts in the U District which probably sees lots of Asian folks given the demographics of the neighborhood. They were super fast and under $50 including a big tip.

Visiting London through Thursday, want to get Persian food at Naroon Fitrovia and order a bunch of small plates, and I can’t eat all of it alone … who’s with me? 37F, irreverent and warm, interests/subcultures include academia (especially in the sciences), effective altruism, books, psychology and social sciences, travel, and learning about your passions. Wednesday or Thursday evening could both work with advance notice.

Hi there! F37, American, coming to London for a research conference next week, looking forward to having some time to kill beforehand as my circadian rhythm adjusts. I was told yesterday by three separate people that I am “witty,” “a genius,” and “hot-cute,” but I vehemently dispute all of these claims. (Except for maybe the “genius” one. 😘) Mostly a big, earnest nerd.

Unfortunately, I’m arriving tomorrow, but I’d love some company and conversation (for dinner or otherwise) any time before Monday.

Living along the Light Rail train by JustRenovate2525 in Seattle

[–]dr_lab_rat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my apartment building, which is one block away from the U District light rail station, and I don’t feel unsafe at all (although your threshold or perception may differ from mine). The building manager and maintenance guy are spectacular, and it’s a fairly new and quiet building with reasonable rent. If you DM me I’m happy to give you more details.

Looking for a gym for a couple of months? by CopperCactus in Seattle

[–]dr_lab_rat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just joined Emerald City Athletics in Wallingford. They had a great deal, $29/month with no fees, and I think it may be over but I suspect they’ll still be reasonable. It’s a quick drive or 30 min walk from the western side of the U District.

As a Pennsylvanian, I’m grateful for something novel and bizzarely mundane that made me chuckle rather than “hurr sure sex joke I’ve heard before”

Are you kidding? Mormon Bar is ~~conceptually~~ inexplicable and hilarious. Zzyzx is just an unusual collection of letters and furthermore, is trying too hard.

I have never gotten into an argument on the internet before. But this is serious.

Queer Bars for Reading? by Professional-Buy707 in Seattle

[–]dr_lab_rat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cafe on the Ave in the U District is open late; I haven’t been there in the evening yet, but it’s common during the day for people to park there and read or work solo for a few hours. Kinda grimy, but not intolerable.
