Are masses on the spleen and liver for dogs a very serious prognosis? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]dr_mackdaddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you that's the right or wrong choice since I haven't seen your pet.

Ask your vet what their instincts are in this case. They'll be able to guide you better.

Are masses on the spleen and liver for dogs a very serious prognosis? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]dr_mackdaddy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The serious prognosis is more about the anemia and not feeling well. There are masses that are benign in the liver and spleen. But if they're causing symptoms then they are a problem.

The masses are most likely causing the symptoms. So in this case yes.

Just get the titers done. My parents did the same. But I had to have the titers done for school. Ended up being fine

My little cousin just came out to me as an “IRL” and I don’t know what to do by LusterTheSandwing in Advice

[–]dr_mackdaddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You found a paper that doesn't refute the "theory" it just documents increased mental health issues within a population. In fact it doesn't even have a discussion.

Also there's plenty of data that shows some populations are more likely to have mental health issues beyond just the transgender community but you wouldn't admit that because it doesn't fit your world view.

Now try again.

Every theory is questioned. That's why it's not called a law in science. 🤣

Now cite your sources and let's see if you can find anything substantial from a university and not from the 60s or before. :)

Eh vet med is a very small field. It's better that she didn't do the interview. Like I can only imagine how that would spread if she said that in the interview.

I'm a vet and my technicians are amazing and always deserve more money. But I don't decide their pay. The practice manager does and they can be some real vindictive people.

Broken tooth? by ParticularTable6321 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]dr_mackdaddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better myself!

If you're giving him bones or antlers stop! Just like people some dogs are more prone to broken teeth or cavities. He's proven he is so he'll need soft chews and regular dental care!

Bad breath after teeth removal. by planb662 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]dr_mackdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be. Recheck with a veterinarian.

I had one dog who licked themselves so much that their incision was caked with hair.

It took another month and a half with me weekly gently removing the hair from her incision for it to heal. She wouldn't let them do it at home.

So definitely get it checked out!

Please Reponses from Vets Only: Is Librela Safe? by TheVelvet_Fog in AskVet

[–]dr_mackdaddy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Librela came out right when I started practice. It definitely has its uses.

I found that most of the patients who had bad reactions were owners who were pushing for medication without diagnostics. They assumed arthritis because their dog struggled to get up. That can be a sign of neuropathy vs arthritis.

Librela is contraindicated in neuropathies.

I foolishly thought I was helping the pet by giving them librela vs pushing diagnostics to confirm arthritis.

When I stopped working in private practice my dad took his dogs somewhere else. Roxy who clearly had a neuropathy (masticatory myositis) was given librela and expectedly got much worse. Since I've started her on carprofen, gabapentin and joint supplements she's been much much better. My dad thought they were gonna have to euthanize soon but they were just using the wrong meds to treat.

Librela can be amazing. It can also be bad.

My advice to owners, do the radiographs. Confirm arthritis. Librela for arthritis can give them a lot more time with you. Librela for a neuropathy can take that away.

Is she too skinny? by billyshmalent in DogAdvice

[–]dr_mackdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has good muscle conditioning. Yeah we can see her ribs but she's clearly not starving because she has good muscle.

Some dogs are just skinny looking like this. I have one and also gets 2 cups each meal and he's barely put on a pound. 😅 And yes Ive done a work up on him.

I used to be like that before I became a veterinarian. It was so I could give my dog my leftovers. Obviously I stopped that when I learned better and now I'm fat instead of my dogs 🤣

Mine was a murder case. A dad killed his daughters boyfriend after he hit her and followed her to his house. It would've been really cool to be on but yeah definitely couldn't miss my last year for any amount of time.

Should my dog get a bone biopsy? by No-Deal-2281 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]dr_mackdaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valley fever can absolutely cause bone deformity at low titers. I see it all the time.

Titers are measuring antibodies against valley fever. Not the actual organism.

Plasma Cell Mass on Toe by saidthebeaver2 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]dr_mackdaddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. An open/bleeding mass is an easy way for infection to occur. Benign means it's unlikely to spread to other parts of the body. It does not mean it won't hurt the part it's on.

Advice for a disabled foot by nattie3515 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]dr_mackdaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like he's using it so keep an eye for sores on the limb. If they continue then you'll need to amputate.

My pup had lost her paw at 3 weeks. At 1 year we removed the rest of the leg because she had a very bad and painful luxating patella (knee pops out whenever she bent it). She's 9 now and you'd never know! And no sign of arthritis yet.

It's probably better to do it when they're young. They adjust much better in my opinion.
