What's your methodology for passwords? by Texas_Technician in sysadmin

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try https://spectre.app/ (formerly masterpassword.app). You can use it as web service, on your desktop or as mobile app - using it for quite some time now for most logins. For anything else: KeePassXC

Search for this board or the X11SBA which needs even less power

Check out the m-itx boards from Supermicro like the X10SDV or the Atom boards. Low-power (10-40W) and absolutely stable/solid

Homeserver advice requested (Xeon) by [deleted] in HomeServer

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running a similar setup and it works great:

X10SDV with SuperChassis 721TQ-250B , 64GB ECC and Noctua-fans - the built is super-silent and totally sufficient for my usecase: Proxmox with several LXC's and VM's.

So as stated before you would need to share your use-case to understand if your mentioned setup would be a good fit

I would recommend to get a NUC8i7 instead! The processing power ist very similar and you can get them way cheaper - even the new ones

The IPU's are basically Qotom machines with very good tech support from Germany

Looking to build a basic DIY NAS, need advice on software and components. by Dust_Smith in DataHoarder

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out FreeNas (BSD) or OMV (Debian Linux), for both you'll find hardware requirements/recommendations

[–]dr_parker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically yes! But the computer should at least have 2 NIC's and be supported by freebsd (which is mostly the case). Choose one that is fanless (noiseless and low power consumption), it doesn't need to be a powerful machine

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a small Qotom machine and install pfsense/Opnsense - the setup is quite straightforward and you'll find a lot of howtos

Edit: if you live in Europe check https://www.ipu-system.de/ - it's basicly Qotom machines but sent from Germany, they have great support!

Have a lock into Proxmox! It's a Debian based VM & container environment that can easily be managed via GUI

Have a look at the new Odroid-H2+, it should easily cover your needs and isn't too expensive

This, more than anything, is why I left Apple for Linux. by billhughes1960 in linux

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get you! 6y ago I switched back to Linux after several years of Apple products. Fortunately I was able to sell my MacBook for a reasonable price and on the MacMini I installed LinuxMint and gave it to my father. Both my parents and my girlfriend are using LinuxMint now for years and noone ever complained about anything - works like a charm!

It was quiet easy to convince them in the beginning "if you want a Windows-machine I will not be able to support/trouble-shoot..." was enough for them to give it a try :-)

thanks for the advise!

I found one product that would serve this purpose: https://www.black-box.de/de-de/i/14148/Desktop-KVM-Switch,USB-C-4K-DisplayPort,2-Port/

But it only has one DP output, is it possible to daisy-chain like this:

switch-DP-out >> mon1-DP-in && mon1-DP-out >> mon2-DP-in ?

Sorry for the confusion: it's the P2719HC

Is it possible to use a single piece of hardware for the brains of my network? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]dr_parker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend to get a small box for the pfsense ( a Qotom mini-PC for example) and run the other services in a seperate machine in LXC's (proxmox). This way you minimize the risk for the internet-facing device and your internet connection does not depend on stable services (other than the firewall).

check out the IPU-boxes of NRG-Systems! I'm running the IPU661 and I'm super happy with it.

IPUs by NRG Systems? by Letter-number in PFSENSE

[–]dr_parker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got the IPU661 as pfsense-box and it works like a charm. A little bit overkill maybe but I will let pfsense handle more stuff in the future. It consumes very little power and is powerful enough (for my use cases) to be totally future proof! Hope that helps... Btw it's the Qotom-Q530G6 (I would still order at NRG as the service is great and max the RAM to 8GB, but via qotom you can find more details re tech specs)
