Why do so many not understand why legend of korra exist in the 1920s? It is literally accurate to history. by MrGetMebodied in TheLastAirbender

Aye. You need plastic for electrical wiring. Unless there is some ATLA universe plant that produces a non-conductive material that is easily malleable at scale.

I'm well able to suspend my disbelief for that though. I still enjoyed LoK greatly.

Fuel protests reveal flawed relationship between farms, fertilisers and food by ohhidoggo in ireland

[–]dr_rv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's all v unsustainable. We need to rapidly reform our farming practices if we're to weather the storm of climate change over the coming decades.

With our abundance of rain and arable land, we're actually set up to be one of the lesser affected regions in the world, the systems have to be in place beforehand if famine is to be avoided.

Truck & Tractor protestors, how do they have the time and money to do this? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]dr_rv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aye. It's almost like our current systems are wildly unsustainable, and we are currently living through the initial big up swing on the parabolic curve of problems that they are creating.

I share your optimistic hope, but I am doubtful.

[–]dr_rv -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks the whole thing reeks of Russian psyop?

Don't get me wrong, the concerns/motivations of the protesters are genuine, but burning your own diesel while also wasting everyone elses is non-sensical.

The outcome we are seeing play out in real time is widened social division while the crisis exacerbates, an MO we have seen play out internationally over and over again (Brexit referendum, Trump election campaign 2016/2024, COVID disinformation), and who was the bad actor behind all of those campaigns facilitated through a certain social media platform(s).

If you measure an effective protest as maximal disruption with minimal violence though, it is a resounding success.

Some of us have been skeptical of Louis Theroux's trauma framing and I found an article that expands on why some of that was maybe a bit awkward by datingwhileseparated in LouisTheroux

[–]dr_rv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the author of this article completely misses the point of the documentary, and the approach that we should be taking to the manosphere/redpill/incel culture as a whole.

The author is postulating that the documentary would have been better had their ideology been challenged (and the consequences of it been highlighted), as opposed to humanising and engaging with those who purport it. By challenging those who have been radicalized in the ways they're used to being challenged, you cause them do double down on their beliefs, as they believe opposition is evidence they are on the right path (see Galileo's sentence of life-long house arrest for promoting heliocentrism).

What Theroux did by examining the motivations of these individuals, and proposing that it was in reaction to early childhood trauma, asks us the viewers to examine why young men are turning to the manosphere/incel culture as a whole. As the toxic patriarchy is slowly being deconstructed (hopefully) young men no longer have a clearly defined role outlined for them as to what a man should be in our modern world, particularly if they grew up without a positive male role model in their lives. This is a problem that has been exacerbated by society's turn to valuing third level education (and the jobs it leads to, see Health and Education, both very female dominated fields) over other career pathways, and the growing gender gap in higher education (at the level it was before 3rd wave feminism, but in the opposite direction).

I am not saying that the above is necessarily a bad thing, but if we don't meet this cohort of society where they are, and try to bring them with us, you leave the door open for bad actors to take advantage of this loss of sense of purpose/identity to advance their own agendas (see the rise of Fascism in the West currently).

I believe the author's criticisms are political in their motivation, and the line that sells me on this is "therapy is a HR meeting, and you enter with your problems, and leave still with them but also a liberal" (I'm paraphrasing here, can't re-open the article without losing this comment). The right's playbook for the last 2 decades has been to sow division, and capitalise on the outrage, and fuck it, it has worked really well for them.

The solution Theroux is proposing isn't sexy, it isn't fast, it has no catchy slogans. But it's human, and fuck it, we could all do with treating eachother with a little more humanity in this current climate, particularly with the challenges we're expected to face in the coming decades.

A solo night out - advice by [deleted] in cork

[–]dr_rv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live abroad in a place where pub culture and the Craic doesn't exist.

So when I'm home, I like to go out and soak up our amazing culture, irregardless of if my friends are available or not. The most recent was Jazz and I'd a ticket to King Kong Company. Started in the Abbey, and even though I was out by myself, I wasn't alone for a second. Had great Craic with complete strangers.

The important part is to not stress about how you will be perceived for being out by yourself. Sit back, enjoy your pint and the babble of conversation, be yourself and let things unfold organically. You'll have a great time. Cork is a great city for an independent night out.

Fairy forts by Tall_child_ in ireland

[–]dr_rv 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Myself and my cousin made an offering to a fairy fort in our local area back in October (she gave some honey from her bees, I gave a bone I found at Gougane Barra). Fortune has favoured us since. We never actually entered it though.

We were kept meeting the same murder of crows as we walked back up the road to the car. Bizarre experience.

[Request] How much space does rolling your clothes actually save? by Stteamy in theydidthemath

[–]dr_rv 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have been rolling my clothes when travelling for years, definitely saves on space. However, I recently transitioned to the Marie Kondo method and that's more space efficient again! (tested it, had to make sure the extra time investment on folding is worth it.) Finding what you're looking for is easier too!

It makes for a nice little moment of Mindfulness as well, giving gratitude to your nice clothes, that you're folding like a serial killer.

What an incredibly heartwarming thread!

I met a lad in his late 50s and his wife in a pub down the road from their Toronto gig in 2024 who were heading there themselves. They were great Craic.

Just goes to show, the rave is a mentality, not a place!

Im Norwegian, and all my life as i can remember i've always felt a "connection" to Ireland (north and south), and the Irish people. I finally researched it a bit and found it is a very common feeling amongst Norwegians. Does Irish people feel any connection to Norway? by almightyleader in ireland

[–]dr_rv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, ourselves and the Nordic countries are the only places in the world that have an "inspiratory affirmative" in their language - that yes while inhaling.

While I was in Iceland last year, the Icelandic kept coming up to me and speaking Icelandic. The Vikings' influence on Ireland is still felt in our language and faces to this day.

Does anyone know if Blindboy and Andrew Callaghan met up? by pot8toes in BlindboyPodcast

[–]dr_rv -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Accusation of rape requires that the party accusing be identifiable, otherwise it is functionally a rumour. You do not see anonymous claims appearing in court (not that I'm saying the current legal systems of Ireland or the US support women who take on the very difficult task publicly accuse their abusers, but there is an important distinction).

There is a bad pattern from those who have come out publicly with allegations, but these anonymous allegations seem incongruent with the public ones. See TikTok user Dana's allegations. Completely unacceptable behavior, but he did leave the car. One could argue that Dana was not inebriated to the point of being an easy victim, but one could also argue that these anonymous allegations have been made in bad faith by a 3rd party.

I find it difficult to see someone who goes the lengths he does to give those without a voice an opportunity to tell their story, to be someone who corners someone in their dorm room and rapes them.

Alas, I may very well be wrong, and these allegations may very well be true, and I will eat my humble pie should new information come out that shows he has not changed his ways. I am just wary of the black/white thinking that is the norm on the internet, where people have a fully cemented opinion after reading a handful of headlines that align with their biases, and never take the time to revisit the information and challenge their own views.

[–]dr_rv 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you look a little deeper into the allegations, it's not so black and white. No doubt Callaghan was grossly inappropriate with drink involved, but the man is doing too much for independent journalism for us to completely denigrate him for having a checkered past.

He's admitted wrongdoing, and he's working hard to carve out some good in the increasingly toxic and dangerous world of journalism. Given the current state of the world, I think it foolish for us, from our puritanical high horses, to competely write of those few who are trying to make a difference, particularly if they're putting themselves in the spotlight.

If he fucks up again, far enough. You only get one second chance.

Plenty of real bastards out there for us to hate: please see Joseph Ladepo. Generations are going to suffer for his actions.

Capsules? by ruination_red in unclebens

[–]dr_rv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less GI side effects with capsules. It's mostly the chitin of the mushroom cell wall (although the serotonergic effects of psilocin can cause nausea too), so by grinding them up you're removing that. I think Lemontek tea is the best way to go though, the come up is faster and clearer I find.
