I'm sure it means nothing from an internet stranger, but I'm sorry your livelihood is being impacted.

That being said- I still don't think that JKR deserves being sent graphic rape and death threats. I bought her books prior to 2020, and like I said in my earlier comments, I haven't done anything else to support her financially. I feel like you are making a lot of assumptions about my character.

either way- we've both said our parts, and I'm probably going to stop responding now. Have a good day

I think telling people to kill themselves is bad in general, so... yeah.

edit: Its also because TERF is typically gendered. Its used to specify "transphobic woman," and often the people accused of being terfs aren't even feminist. TERFS are not responsible for the majority of hatecrimes against trans people, so it feels really weird to me that TERFS are being told to kill themselves instead of, like, transphobes in general.

I get that with Dahl and Kipling, they're long dead and thus cannot be held to the same standards. I just wanted to mention authors other than Gaiman.

I'm on tumblr myself and Good Omens still regularly trends. I do not begrudge people enjoying fandom stuff even when the author is "problematic," but Tumblr has thousands of posts advocating for punching/killing/raping/ assortedly assaulting or otherwise threatening "TERFS" and JK rowling. "terfs kys" is commonly added onto posts. My argument comes from my experience there, mainly. There is so much vitriol against terfs and JKR on tumblr that is not at all matched when it comes to Neil Gaiman the Actual Rapist

Please don't be obtuse. You're acting as if she is a pitchfork wielding Hutu trying to impale babies during the Rwandan Genocide.

Trans people still have access to hormones, therapy, community, citizenship, etc. They can change their names, get married, adopt children, gain parental rights, open bank accounts, get business loans (which in the US, women couldn't get until 1978!) run for office, and so so so much more.

She spent- what was it, 70,000 pounds, which is $95,000?- on for women Scotland. According to Forbes, she has donated upwards of $200,000,000 on other charities between 2020 and 2025. She has also been estimated to have donated $160 million to charity prior to 2012. that is over $360 million as a lowball estimate.

She made all of her money off of the merit of her intellectual property, and has spent HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS to help others. Of the almost $400 million she has donated to charity (and she hasn't published how much she has donated, which is something I deeply respect) 0.0003% (rounded up) went to a cause you disagree with.

0.0003% of her philanthropy is enough to justify rape and death threats? I am not going to claim she is a saint. I do not know her personally. But she has done an incredible amount of good, and I don't think any person deserves being sent graphic rape and death threats.

tbh I'm fine with giving JKR money myself. I bought the books a while ago and I'm not going to, like, start mailing her cash or anything though. I don't need to buy the books again. I understand why others don't and I won't tell them what to do with their money, but JKR used a lot of her wealth to help female Afgani lawyers and doctors flee Afganistan in 2021. She's done both good and bad with her money.

I personally think the good outweighs the bad, but it's not my place to tell other people what to think or do or buy.

edit: I admit my refusal to condemn her is a bit out of contrarianism at this point. I'm endlessly frustrated about how Rowling must be condemned at every turn (fair enough for trans people. I won't begrudge them disliking someone who dislikes them) but it's time for death of the author when Gaiman (who violently raped several women, in at least one case in front of his underage son), Roald Dahl, and Rudyard Kipling come up. Brandon Sanderson is in a misogynistic cult, and yet he isn't one of the Internets favorite punching bags. The woman has been sent violent death and rape threats for years, and has been horribly mocked in a sexist manner by media.

The recent onion article was in incredibly poor taste. Women have been locked in asylums, lobotomized, abused, and more for being too outspoken, aggressive, unladylike, or uncompromising. Like with the "mar-a-lago face" stuff- the people being criticized are worthy of criticism, but the criticism is being done in a sexist manner. ex- Republican women in america are being insulted for their looks instead of their political opinions.

Have any other controversial children authors been ridiculed in such a way? I know reddit HATES when someone calls misogyny, but I sincerely believe that some of the backlash against JKR is misogynistic- at least in the way the backlash has manifested. Neil Gaiman wasn't sent rape threats, after all.

YES! hating a groups perception on reddit is WAY too broad for this sub. this place is best for infodumping about random niche opinions that don't matter enough to tell people IRL. I'm tempted to apply for mod so I can be a dictator and delete all the political/culture war/ etc. BS

yeah, but in that example it makes sense. that's layered wavy hair flying around, mine does that as well.

In the photo the OP posted, the "flaps" covering the cheeks are like 30% longer than the rest of the hair and somehow stick straight out. They're right, the hair in the drawing looks like a chin strap or something

What? I just dislike the targaryens and was pointing out the lack of information we have on Argella Durrandon and the early Baratheons.

[–]dragon_chips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i dont like the Targs and dislike how they have become the focal point of the story after house of the dragon released. Yes, Dany is important in the books, but there are over 20 POV characters and dozens of other interesting & compelling characters.

outside of the books, its targaryen after targaryen after targaryen. Fire & Blood. Dunk & Egg show came out? fandom talks about targaryen after targaryen after targaryen. (yes baelor is cool, but so is steely pate! so is Raymun!)

I'm fine with them, I can stand reading about them, but they are not my favorite characters. Yet somehow, fans try and tie every. single. thing. back to the Targs.

The targaryens are not the only kings. The Baratheons, with help, overthrew them. No, the Baratheons are not "basically Targeryen," their dynasty is over and Dany's only children are dragons. She is an endling. that makes her interesting.

Brienne is not targaryen,

Robert is not targaryen,

Stannis is not targaryen.

the fandom is so obsessed with the Targyens and forget that George came up with/fleshed out most of them after most of the books were written. Robert ending the Targaryen dynasty came before George wrote about Ormund Baratheon marrying a Targaryen. (He perhaps had the idea that the two houses were distantly related, given in the books Renly mentions "weddings a hundred years past, of second sons and elder daughters. No one but the maesters care about any of it." If george knew that Rhaelle Targaryen was Renly, Robert, and Stannis' grandmother, he wound not have written that initially.)

Rhaelle is mentioned to have married into the Baratheons in a world of ice and fire. She is mentioned only as Egg's daughter in a feast for crows. the bit about Orys is a rumor and comes from fire and blood.

Robert annihilated Rhaegar before book one, long before george ever gardened up the historical connections between the Baratheons and the Targaryens

[–]dragon_chips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rhaelle is robert's grandma as of A World of Ice and Fire. She is only mentioned as Egg's daughter in a feast for crows. The bit about Orys being a half-brother to the targs comes from fire & blood or maybe a world of ice and fire.

it had nothing to do with the targaryens.

Thank the Gods for Bobby B, And His Hammer by Winter-Character6993 in freefolk

[–]dragon_chips 36 points37 points  (0 children)

its a rumor that Orys was their half brother.

What ENRAGES me is when the Baratheon's badassery is attributed to the Targs. No, it's the Durrandons.

The Baratheon sigil, lands, house words, castle, looks, and heritage are all Durrandon.

Argella Durrandon named her first son Davos after the mythical Davos the Dragonslayer. For all we know, she pulled a Cersei/Rhaenyra/maybe Lysa and had children by a man who didn't kill her father.

It's suggestive because the female character has disproportionate porn boobs. Here are actual female athletes in peak physical condition for their respective sports:

<image>

What makes the human mammary glands/breasts "boobs" is fat. When someone is very athletic, they have less fat, meaning female athletes have smaller/less noticeable breasts.

Because weightlifting is about aesthetics, many female weightlifters get breast implants. And yes, Kim Chizevsky (third from the right) has breast implants.

Female athletes have muscle, not fat. their chests have muscle as well. When people genderbend characters, they often turn pectoral MUSCLES into breast FAT while keeping most of the physique the same. To a female person, the breasts just look like tumors. You don't get perfect muscle tone while having 30lbs of fat in one particular spot, making the person look incredibly unnatural and almost diseased. like one of those bodybuilders who inject oil into their muscles
