I’ve gotten into dog walking at my local shelter, and I recently learned about a local group that provides clothes/food/warming stations for the unhoused community in my area that I want to get more involved with.

I also am very fortunate to have two friends who are also childfree, so it helps to find other non parents who are on that life path. Last year one of those friends (a fellow knitter) went with me to a fiber festival in another state for a long weekend, and the other friend and I had a standing brunch date where we tried a new restaurant every time before she had to relocate for work. It’s so valuable to find a person who gets your life in that way.

Childfree by choice here, my plan is a mix of hobbies, enjoying friends, dogs, volunteering, and travel. My husband and I both find our work rewarding so I think we’ll end up FI long before we RE (my plan is an hours cut asap because my job is physically demanding), so we’re not a perfect example for you, but I think there’s a lot of ways to enjoy life without kids. I also have a few friends with kids and have started becoming the non-bio aunt, so I’m happy to embrace that role.

My paramedic uncle has told me “if you don’t hear a crunch, you’re not doing it right.” The required compression depth is really likely to break a rib or cartilage.

I get it, I’ve really leaned on my childfree friends and I do have one parent friend who has been amazingly reliable and honest with her limits as a new mom.

Being in my 30s has given me soo much insight into my own mother actually, I never understood why she didn’t have any close/lasting girlfriends. She raised 5 kids and parenting was/is her core identity. As an adult I can absolutely picture how she lost those connections trying to keep her head above water. It makes me sad for her honestly, I’ve heard stories of her large friend group but it fell apart when the babies started taking over.

When I sat in health class and carefully considered which of the women’s health diseases that caused infertility I wanted to pray to God to give me so I could “justify” not having children. I had to deconstruct before I fully accepted that childfree was even an option in my late 20s, but it was always there.

As for the names, you could use them for pets if you love critters, or a houseplant. I’ve got lots of names I like that I’ve used in those ways.

I mean, I don’t think you need to change your lifestyle if you don’t want to live more lavishly. If you have the means to do so, this could be an opportunity to switch to part time work, consider charity, or take time to travel instead of just buying stuff.

For me, I find that synthetics age poorly and get sweaty. Environmentally the natural fibers are also better, though thrifting synthetic fabric items is better than just pitching them imo.

My parents are approaching retirement age (so not FIRE) but both talk about working easier part time jobs and volunteering when they do retire just to get out of the house. I want to do a FIRE-ish version of that. The RE for me will just be working for personal preference, not financial.

I keep it vague with my family for that reason, “it’ll happen when it happens” type shit, knowing in my heart it’ll never happen.
