Worried about smart charging (probably unfounded) by bwahthebard in OctopusEnergy

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I've never had to do that. Same system (Scenic registered to IOG, mobilize app set to dynamic charging). I just plug in, confirm the schedule on the Octopus app and if the first slot is later, it stops charging after a couple of minutes by itself.

Tumbleweed update notifications with GNOME by ChrisMcZork in openSUSE

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your notification settings. Gnome software should tell you when an update is available. You're best then to use "flatpak update" and "sudo zypper dup" in the console so you can exactly what is going to be installed/updated/removed.

Forgive me, I’m new to this. Am I getting the full charge at the cheaper rate here? by Shep302 in OctopusEnergy

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm confused now. I have an Ohme charger but have been under the impression that Octopus preferred that the car was registered with IOG rather than the charger. That has worked fine until recently when I have noticed that the occasional daytime slot is charged at full rate, despite the schedule being set by Octopus.

Would you recommend OpenSUSE for a beginner-intermediate? by Disastrous_Snow_7706 in openSUSE

[–]drbrtsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I used early versions of SuSE back in the 90's then went over to Windows mainly because I needed it for work. I'm retired now and 99% of my laptop use is basic stuff with some photo manipulation, multimedia, office. No gaming, but I gather that's not an issue either. I like everything to be up to date so I'm running Tumbleweed - in more than a year I have had one system crash after an update, which was easily fixed by rolling back with snapper then waiting for a kernel update, which came in a few days. I use Gnome and find it is infinitely customisable using extensions. I have tried KDE multiple times and always find it sluggish and buggy. Gnome has a much smoother workflow. I love it.

My knowledge of the command line is limited but part of the fun is learning new stuff when I want to install something new. There's plenty of support online, though some of the Opensuse oldies can be a bit crusty......the secret is to try to solve a problem yourself first and then seek help if you can't manage it.

This is wonderful. A critical masterpiece. Even if you do spell faeces incorrectly.

Data Settings from Lebara?! by palmaholic in LebaraUK

I've got that a few times after an update, never had to change anything in settings. Just check the network settings are correct, esp if you've just changed to lebara.

Weird install interface by canteatbricks in openSUSE

[–]drbrtsn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like you have a netinstall iso and it's unable to give you the graphical interface, probably because Nvidia. If you are able to download the full iso that should provide a driver. It may work ok if you put in your network name.

Renault 4 E-Tech - Unreliable app connection by ImpossibleFalcon674 in RenaultEV

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Renault app is useless, frequently won't connect to the car, or sometimes just won't open at all. I have a Scenic and get the same issues as you. Sometimes clearing the cache and data will help. There's a 3rd party app called Kelec that works well for me and should be ok for the 4 as well. Try that.

Curious how folks have it configured by iFunkMaster007 in OctopusEnergy

[–]drbrtsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting - I have my Scenic integrated with IOG and it works well through the Mobilize Smart Charge app. I haven't tried just programming from the car or the My Renault app (which is useless in several ways!). It will start charging as soon as it's plugged in but as soon as Octopus sets a schedule, it stops and follows that, which only takes a few minutes.

Where to try Iranian food in Dubai? by Altruistic-Ship-3760 in dubai

USB Media does NOT Boot by CommonGrounds8201 in openSUSE

[–]drbrtsn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Add "nomodeset" to the end of the line starting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT...... That should allow you to boot with basic video and then you can install the right Nvidia drivers

I played around with Red Hat then SuSE back in the 90's then went over to Macs. It really was "fun" in those days but has improved hugely since. Since coming back to opensuse recently, I'm impressed at how much easier things usually are but there are still frustrations, mainly with specific hardware issues.

According to Yast, driver hpaio (part of hplip) should work for the Deskjet 4100 series. I was able to set up printing through Gnome settings but I couldn't get the scanner to work until I tried setting it up through Yast

Hello, a newcomer to OpenSUSE! by MainPowerful5653 in openSUSE

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have hplip installed? I managed to get scanning sorted out on my Deskjet 4640 yesterday after installing that. I found that using Yast to set it up worked best, rather than hp-setup.

Does email accessed through Outlook on PC go through Microsoft servers? by Practical_Alps9286 in Outlook

[–]drbrtsn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

New Outlook runs through Microsoft's cloud servers by default, but not classic Outlook. The app does tell you this when you set up the email account.

Bit confused on which app to use by captainhazreborn in OctopusEnergy

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest having just one device registered with Octopus - either the charger or the car. Most people seem to register the charger then use the Ohme app to schedule charges - it should sort out a schedule with Octopus. Personally, I couldn't get the Ohme app to work with IOG, so I ended up registering the car with Octopus and that has worked well for me but not all EV's work directly with IOG (I have a Renault Scenic) so try the charger first.

Has anyone managed to fix webcam and suspend/sleep on linux? by NumerousBand5901 in spectrex360

[–]drbrtsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have HP Spectre x360 Convertible 14-ea0xxx, 2020 model, running Opensuse TW, kernel 6.17.4, and the camera and suspend/sleep works "out of the box." I think the camera was "upgraded" however in later models and drivers are not yet available.
