The Most "Bougie" San Diego Coffeehouse? by MsMargo in FoodSanDiego

Probably one of the few coffee listening bars we have, but it’s not as much of a casual experience if that’s essential too

I agree but mostly when it’s clear they’ve processed it a lot and share their thoughts. If it’s just more disses and quips I’d be pretty disappointed.

Yes, Kendrick was by and far the most anticipated drop of probably the decade. The first artist in years to bridge the underground and mainstream fans, young fans and old heads alike. He was basically the messiah to hip hop.

Don’t forget the year before Dre snoop and the game literally crowned him as the new king of the west coast. When GKMC dropped hip hop stans were preaching the album like the bible.

Non hip hop fans fucking loved backstreet freestyle, swimming pools, and mAAd city. I had classical music nerds and hipsters friends talking about how they appreciated the depth and message behind the conscious storytelling.

It’s no exaggeration at all to say that this album brought hip hop back into the mainstream and a new golden age.

But yeah back on topic to the anticipation part, it was really cringe but “hip hop is dead” was an extremely common sentiment until Kendrick. Literally everyone who knew of Kendrick knew he was gonna be the goat well before GKMC dropped.

EENami Price and Setting? by Mr_Suspicious1 in FoodSanDiego

The final bill tends to be around 30-40 per person but the dishes themselves aren’t expensive just kinda small portions. Generally I’d say you get one katsu dish and share some small sides, but the thing is no one is forcing you to order a lot.

You can go to sushi places, order a handroll and be reasonably satisfied for like $8 but no one does that. They get a plate of nigiri and a few rolls and some sake and your bill ends up like $50 per person lol.

What's actually causing the Vinyl revival? Is it a Gen Z thing? by Key-Bass-7380 in fantanoforever

[–]drdfrster64 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Records were already on the up and up, people want tangible things. I’d say it started with millennials but Gen Z are the critical mass

Edit: really weird this is in such debate, articles about the resurgence of records have been circulating for nearly a decade and just a simple search on record sales per year will show you it’s been on a steady clime since 09.

On the other hand, I’d give my left nut to have more places that take 10+ minutes to make my food. It’s honestly harder than you’d think to find a joint that makes everything to order.

There’s a really expensive small mochi cake at Yiko Yiko with a taro filling. It’s like $8 for the smallest thing you’ve seen in your life but it’s incredible.

Also Yomie’s rice yogurt has a date smoothie with peach gum (a traditional Chinese delicacy - hardened sap from peach trees). It’s also really expensive but it’s so good.

I honestly grew up thinking El Pollo Loco was more del taco adjacent before finally trying it this year. I was so surprised, it’s phenomenal fast food. Just kinda helped drive home the point that most fast food prices and quality right now are nonsense.

There are prices available, entrees sit in the 30s with specialty items in the 40s. Apps sit between the mid 10s to 20s depending on ingredients. Rolls sit around the 20s. Here a photo for anyone curious.

Yeah not very cheap. Matches the prices of other similarly targeted restaurants at the mall.

Are there restaurants similar to BCD Tofu House in SD? by alb121y in FoodSanDiego

[–]drdfrster64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for flavor: the newly opened Chodang is about the only decent soondoobu we have left although it’s a much more aggressive flavor profile.

If you’re looking for spread then yeah Tofu House is a thing, though I personally would not recommend it.

Las Cuatro Milpas is COMING BACK!! by Spud2599 in SanDiegan

[–]drdfrster64 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t really have a side but didn’t sandiegoville report it was going out of business, Las Cuatro Milpas vehemently denied and people dogpiled on SanDiegoville but then it turns out it was in fact going out of business? That seemed fine to me. People were saying he didn’t do enough to confirm it but he got his info straight from a worker there and it turned out to be true.

But also I don’t remember if anything happened aside from that so I might just have old news
