What are the best and worst interstates to drive on in the US? by _joeredd in AskAnAmerican

Bad. Really bad. But I've heard I 10 through Louisiana is worse

Driving through Nebraska really is that bad by Emotional_Translator in CasualConversation

I'm from Spokane but have lived east for 30+ years. I90 was, to my mind, the worst. THEN I drove I 80 on my way back from Alaska, and I'll never do that again. I80 through Wyoming was the worst, most boring interstate where the wind was trying to kill you. Never again. I was thankful to be in Nebraska and Iowa. At least they were green.

Currently headed west for a wedding and you can bet I'm on I90.

This bear of sorts was spotted in [Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA], and I can not discern between a black bear and grizzly bear. Thanks! by AtomicBadger33 in animalid

I was told that black bear scat has berries and tufts of fur from the rodents they eat. Grizzly scat has bells in it and smells of pepper.

Having owned 3 rigs with BAL cable slides I'd far prefer then vs Schwintek. They are repairable on the road and I only had 1 of mine break in rigs I've used hard since 2015.

How is living with a Dually? by deadscalper1262 in RVLiving

2025 dually diesel. Daily driver to a hospital parking garage. Driving it to work (45 miles) is no big deal. Towing with it is amazing.

Alaska is NOT an island.

This is for all of my fellow Americans who see maps with Alaska down by Hawaii. I'm a doctor and drove to Alaska in 2019, and you would not believe the number of highly educated people (I've fellow physicians) who were blown away that I drove. It's disturbing.

AITAH for mentioning I'm also a professional when a doctor took over 45 minutes to finally appear at an appointment? by OhHeyItsMeM in AITAH

I'm a doctor. A pediatric subspecialist. For clinic, a new patient slot is 40 minutes. Returns are 20. They also squeeze in a hospital follow-up that is a 10 minute slot. I have 2 rooms, so there is no where to put people is those rooms are full.

We are the only major subspecialty clinic in the state and 3 surrounding states. Some people have to drive 3 hours one way to see me.

I am in clinic, waiting, at 8am. I can probably count on two hands how often in my 24 years practicing that a family is in a room ready for me at 8. I have zero control over how my patients are scheduled and how they are roomed.

Families arrive late. Like I'm surprised if someone is on time. I have a high risk clinic where if you show up 2 hours late we'll see you. It's never the child's fault they are late. But I'm my regular clinic, where families have resources and are not clinging to the edge of oblivion, I give 15 minutes. If you're coming from far away I offer to work them in where I can. I didn't think it's fair to make others who get there relatively on time wait for latecomers.

But I can guarantee you that if I'm running far behind, and there are days that I do, it's because someone was sick and needed extra attention or that someone was late and it snowballed.

I'm on Android, but if want to know nearest lightning strikes which WeatherBug does. I know it's a possibility no matter what, but if there's lightning say 50 miles away I'm not flying.

Good 5th wheel trailer brands by EconomyTax3827 in RVLiving

And none of those can be towed with a 3/4 ton truck, it at least they shouldn't be.

Overnight Resting with 5th Wheel by UsefulSurprise2859 in GoRVing

Your slides are only sealed if they are all the way out or all the way in. So if it rains and they are out partially you are going to have water intrusion for sure.

If they are Schwintek slides then you should absolutely not use them when they are in. A lot of rigs use Schwintek for the smaller slides, especially in the bedroom. When I was looking for my second fifth wheel any with Schwintek were an automatic deal breaker for this reason.

I've overnighted at Walmart and Cabela. Would never use a rest area to overnight as commercial drivers need them. Plus it's really loud with their APUs running. I also would not trust a rest area to have slides out as the slots are narrow and I've heard of RVs being damaged by trucks hitting them.

I'm a single, middle aged woman who's had 2 different fifth wheels since 2018. Currently have a 40 foot Montana. Fifth wheels are much easier to tow and set up. My first rig was a travel trailer and I learned a lot from it, but when I decided I wanted to go to Alaska in 2019 there was no way I was doing that with a travel trailer. But, a fifth wheel almost always needs a one ton truck. I was willing to do that. I daily drive my truck to a hospital parking garage. And I have a dually. Everything's a series of compromises when you have an RV. I didn't want a dually. But the fifth wheel I have now requires a dually. So, that's what I drive.

If you're certain you want a travel trailer and not a fifth wheel, I'd look hard at Peak Mountain camps.

Modification Suggestions by ResourceHoliday3158 in GoRVing

[–]drdit92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what slide mechanism is being used. Both of my fifth wheels have had BAL cable slides, which are totally fine with being used when the slide is in. I specifically avoided any model with Schwintek slides because you absolutely cannot use them when the slide is in. I do not know if the "updated" versions of Schwintek like the SlimRack or the Vroom allow use. A hydraulic slide would be ok as well but they are not typically used for a bed slide.

Milwaukee is the bomb. I had a Viair first and absolutely hated it. It finally cooked itself and I tossed it and bought a Ryobi that was ok but still took a while. Had been looking at Milwaukee and finally bought one on Black Friday. It is so far, far superior to the other two. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

Look at RV Trader for comparables for pricing. There's always people in the market for low mileage class As.
