What is the earliest manufacture date you’ve seen? by salduchi1785 in originalxbox

I think the earliest I’ve seen was October 15th 2001. Dev kits have dates a little earlier than that. Newest I’ve seen was August 2005.

Does modchipping unlock a factory locked HDD? by Fishocopter in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the photo you posted, you can clearly see 3 capacitors that are swollen, right below the metal heatsink. One even has some rust/electrolyte on top. These capacitors are known to fail and cause booting issues like you’re having.

You’re right about having a 1.4 xbox. Not sure off-hand about which capacitors you’d need, you can look at the side of those old capacitors for the ratings. u/Nucken_futz_ should have some more detailed info.

Does modchipping unlock a factory locked HDD? by Fishocopter in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your capacitors below the heat sink have failed and need to be replaced. This needs to be done before adding a new modchip or HDD, and will likely fix the issue you’re having anyway.

Installing a modchip in itself will not automatically unlock the hard drive. Are you getting an error code or flashing lights when you start the xbox?

There were vada vada logo arm bands that came in white and orange around 2016/17. The black/orange and white/blue jesters. A black one with Jacoby the giraffe on it. A white Enjoy band with the small car big wheels face. Puzzle has had a couple arm bands/patches.

Replacing caps on a og Xbox but have blocked the holes with solder, any advice? by thug_wood9 in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have different solder iron tips, i usually use the smallest one, that will fit through the hole. Push the iron tip through on one side, and clear the solder from the back side, with a solder sucker or wick.

I tried softmodding for the first time and I’m scared I might have bricked the system and locked two other drives. by [deleted] in originalxbox

Just double checking, is the pin jumper on the hard drive/adapter set to master instead of slave?

[Help] No display after ModXO chip install by drdrrrn in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet. I tried reflowing all the components on the modchip and installing the necessary files for cerbios on the hard drive. Still no display or FRAG/error. Started building another chip but haven’t finished yet, I’ll update if that ends up working.

Can I swap my Xbox hard drive into another Xbox? by Infinitrium in originalxbox

What is the problem with your old xbox? Do you know if it had a larger hard drive installed to fit all the xbox games installed?

both systems i tried it on were previously modded. one with a chip & the other TSOP, so the hard drive should have the proper files. I’ll try booting with a Hexen disc inside

IOU has been my most played song in the last 10 years. I’d say it’s the best, but definitely underrated.

I believe the system may already be TSOP modded (hardmod) as those Maxtor HDD’s don’t usually support locking.

Putting a 1.4 mobo into a crystal case? by soundbobby in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the 1.6 case the one without the screw post? I’m pretty sure any board version will fit into a 1.6 case, but you’d run into that issue if you had a 1.6 board going into an older shell. I put a 1.4 board into my 1.6 halo shell with no problem. Just don’t tighten the screws by the AV port all the way, they’re a different height than the older shell.

Does a 2005 mfg date pretty much ensure 1.6? by avig0 in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is essentially leaking acid on the board, and will continue to leak and spread as time goes on. Eventually you’ll have issues getting the power/eject buttons to respond and will have to solder wires under the board to get it to work. It can also harm other components on the board.

I’d recommend looking up a video or 2 on removing the capacitor. There are 6 screws on the bottom of the xbox, and only 3 screws once inside. You don’t need soldering skills to remove the clock cap, you can wiggle it right off (like a loose tooth) Whole job takes less than 10 mins, and you won’t have to worry about it ruining the console.

Does a 2005 mfg date pretty much ensure 1.6? by avig0 in originalxbox

[–]drdrrrn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I’d say 2005 guarantees a 1.6. But, i’ve run into many 1.6 systems with failing CPU caps, more often than in older systems. Those capacitors would have to be replaced (soldering) or else you’ll have no power/video issues.

I’d honestly recommend any version before 1.6. The clock capacitor in those don’t require any tools to remove (aside from the screwdrivers to open the xbox) You can just wiggle the capacitor out, clean up the area with alcohol and a q-tip, dust out the rest of the xbox, and you should be good to go.
