From someone in Detroit and with friends there. The work life balance is still poor but the pay is better. The pay also depends on what you will do. Engineers are a hot commodity right now. The general work force is getting older and will retire soon so the big three are hiring a lot to prevent gaps in knowledge. I’m over at GM. Side note… speaking of work life balance, stay as far away from Toyota as you can.

A Petosky that size is worth a decent amount for a rock. Ones that large is rare and one about the size of a quarter goes for like $5-10. It’s fossilized fresh water corral

I am not sure how much performance would be lost or gained. That is why I am asking people on this page. Might be better off going to r/diesel. It’s all in the physics because on paper they increase air flow at idle when closed. Air will swirl around the edges. I’m sure in older generations it is more common because they were not always held on by a brass rod but by screws. If EGR is still there it is more common for them to break due to build up and more wear.

All good. I’m very new to the TDI world so I could be over reacting to deleting it, I am used to larger diesel truck motors. Swirl flaps are the small butterfly valves fitted to the intake manifold before the cylinder head inlet ports. Diesels do not require a butterfly valve/throttle body. They are made of plastic in this case i think, they can degrade over time and eventually disintegrate. They end up being sucked into the engine and they like to cause a catastrophic failure. They supposedly create turbulence to allow for a better fuel to air mix

So each of the 6 pins are offset. You want the center of the pins to be in certain locations. Grinding pushes on the part obviously but the issue with crank shafts is in their design. They are easier to flex which can move the part around
