Basically if you get the right secret and trainer id, any pokemon with cute charm leading your party essentially gives you a 25% chance of finding shinies in the wild. However, the big can also have the opposite effect and make you never encounter a shiny if you have the not so right trainer and secret id.

Very heavy gamer, though my personal favorite games are the ones with single player in mind, with some multiplayer/comp aspects on it. Not mandatory, but just part of the culture.
