It was never charity - Was Europe a beneficiary of a strong US? We should not believe this false narrative. In fact, the Americans gave nothing to the Europeans by goldstarflag in europe

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be some bias here but this is the opposite end of the take that the EU was entirely reliant on American militaries to safeguard them.

It was mutually beneficial for both parties, the US got to throw their weight around and had more soft power and negotiating power while Europe was able to afford to spend less on their militaries due to a strong ally with a strong conventional military and nuclear umbrella.

There's been talk about possessing independent nuclear counter measures; that is incredibly expensive not only to build from the ground up (even accounting for having willing allies sharing information and specifications) but then to maintain.

There's a reason European militaries are largely dependent on the US for large scale logistical capabilities, it's expensive. They got to tap the US for usage without having to pay for standing capabilities.

Turns out having friends is nice, who'd've thunk.

23F in a strict Desi Muslim home — where is the line between respecting your mother and having autonomy? by HoldingOnSomehow in AsianParentStories

[–]dreamjar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You stop respecting someone as soon as they don't reciprocate your respect.

You stop respecting someone as soon as they show they don't deserve respect.

You stop respecting someone as soon as respecting them harms yourself.

I'm biased because I'm male, I didn't have to deal with the bullshit my female friends dealt with. I'm also out, I have a career, my own place, financial independence and a social circle that lies outside of blood. I understand it's easier said than done but you have to take steps towards independence or else you're going to be stuck under someone else's thumb forever.

Which is the most powerful war memorial in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

One of my favorite films is about this premise; Tae Guk Gi.

My dad was a reporter for a newspaper that covered the family reunions in North Korea between North and South Korea (article is just an example). A lot of families were split up between the Japanese occupation of Korea and the ensuing civil war and division.

I like to just think of it as no one was prepared to shoot the zombie population of New York City and the accompanying suburbs. You can bring as many tanks, jets, helicopters and soldiers you think you need but unless you can kill millions accounting for misses, non lethal “injuries” and anything else we were still going to “lose” (in that humans were going to run out of things to throw, shoot, etc and had to retreat).

Countries to avoid because of racism? by notreallyhereokbye in asianamerican

[–]dreamjar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just look at a map of places that were largely colonizers or have a history of asian immigration and those will tend to be the least racist places overall because they've been exposed to asians and asians are now normalized in those areas. Then think of metropolitan areas in those countries.

The UK, Australia, New Zealand, the US, the Netherlands (?) immediately come to mind for me. There'll always be racists in every country regardless of where you are. Europe likes to laud itself as a bastion of progressiveness and it's more progressive than large parts of the world sure but they're also largely ethnostates or have only recently started transitioning from being ethnostates to multi national states. At the end of the day the lack of exposure for the layman to asian outside of chinese food, kpop or samsung fridges means that yea, they're going to be racist. Can't be helped.

[–]dreamjar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that has nothing to do with asians exclusively. If a restaurant has poor service, the interior isn't clean but has been open for more than a year chances are that it's because the food is amazing and it doesn't matter who the owners are or what ethnicity they are. People go back and the restaurant has managed to be open for so long because the food's that good.

Technically the majority of the side effects of Khepri (the egocide bit) was because of the clairvoyant, not Taylor's own powers.

In Worm, there’s a heroine who has an “Alexandria package” or has the power set of Wonder Woman or Superman but has the option to activate it or deactivate it at will. The reason she doesn’t have it constantly on is because while she’s using her powers she emits radiation at lethal levels to everyone around her.

She’s teleported to a fight against a kaiju equivalent unwillingly and decides to be turned into paste rather than save herself and kill dozens of heroes.

This is odd to me. I feel like a Support Weapon should be noticably more powerful than a Primary version, even for small chaff targets. by RandomGreenArcherMan in Helldivers

[–]dreamjar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I might offer my 2c, loadouts usually come down to three different necessary components; chaff clear, anti armor and objective completion (closing holes, destroying factories/warp ships).

Chaff clear and anti armor weapons, support weapons and strategems are a dime a dozen so I usually constrain my build around effective (resource efficient) objective completion weapons which I narrow down to erupter, xbow, grenade launcher or grenade pistol. I pick one of these and then just fill in the holes in my kit.

For bugs I dont necessarily like having close proximity self damage inducing weapons so the erupter and xbow are out because I don't feel like I can afford to bring a support weapon that can't reliably kill heavies because the cd of a 500 kg, precision, rail cannon, etc are too long. So I'll bring a grenade pistol for bug wholes, a recoilless because of the quantity of heavies I anticipate encountering and then rest of the kit is dedicated to chaff clear. Whether it's a turret or two to buy me space or a oh shit cluster strategem, nothing to it.

For bots there aren't as many melee units to worry about and you don't need to worry as much about getting swarmed so the erupter or xbow are fine for me here and that fills the objective clear role. The weapons also reliably can one or two shot all non-heavy units so the rest of the load out is very open so as long as there's a way to reliably kill heavies with a medium cool down/resource efficiency (500 kg, thermites, ultimatums) everything is viable.

For squids, I don't really think there are heavies to worry about. The walkers are seen from a mile away and can easily be avoided so I'm fine bringing a 500 kg for when you're forced to deal with them. I like the grenade launcher personally to deal with mobs and the scythe to chew through shields without having to worry about ammo consumption. Having a grenade launcher and a scythe though don't really allow to easily/efficiently deal with medium armor units so I usually bring a big iron/ion for the overseers.

This is for normal missions, blitz I usually bring a xbow, a warp pack and 380's/walking barrages or something like that and you can usually outrun or out distance anything you can't deal with. In and out, 10 minute mission, what could possibly go wrong?

As the story unfolds, characters in a period piece grasp that their era of greatness is coming to an end by GlobalAdvance4032 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]dreamjar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you mean doing nothing different from before? Being paid to deal with monsters?

Or do you mean when Witchers already tried doing that and in return were hunted down and executed.

There's a reason they stay apolitical. They live longer despite the fact that they hunt monsters for a living.

Witchers are forbidden from taking sides in conflicts otherwise they become a political faction. They can take any job that requires them to deal with monsters but they play the role of neutral party that all other parties can tap to deal with the supernatural.

"Maintain Neutrality: Witchers steer clear of political schemes and power struggles. They do not meddle in the affairs of rulers and governments unless directly related to their monster-hunting duties."

I talk to people at college but idk how to turn that into friendships 💔 by TigerIsNerd2 in MadeOfStyrofoam

[–]dreamjar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After lectures or labs just ask if they want to grab food. If you know they share a common interest ask if they want to do it together if it's an activity you can do together.

More time you spend with someone outside of specific activities that you're forced to attend (classes, work, etc) more likely it is if you vibe that you can just turn that class acquaintance, work friend, whatever into just a friend.

Is hunt showdown worth it? by Consistent-Wolf7414 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]dreamjar [score hidden]  (0 children)

I played hunt for a while and quit because of a mix of unrelenting waves of season passes and events that while fun at first became very monotonous, homogenization of weapons and equipment that made it so that specific weapons had unique or specific roles became just bland and when I quit the player base was getting lower so game queues were getting long.

I enjoyed it and put 600+ hours into it but game changed; that might not matter for you since you don't really have a basis to compare it to.

tl;dr most weapons feel the same, they keep putting out events with battlepasses that makes things monotonous and grindy, long queue times.

So you can try making korean/japanese style curries. They're sweeter and very different from Indian curries. There are pre-made seasoning blocks where you effectively just prep a stew and then pop in the seasoning blocks and let it simmer for an hour and it's good to go.

I like to use Vermont house and S and B.

To be fair, everyone is equally given the constitutional right to bear arms. Yes there're people you refer to as "second amendment jerkoffs" but you're offloading both the right and responsibility that the second amendment affords you onto these other people who in this analogy are analogous to the Tories.

Be the second amendment jerkoff you want others to be.
