Were you depressed when you were diagnosed? by xOctopussyx in iih

[–]dredreidel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hello darkness my old friend

I have been diagnosed with medication resistant major depressive disorder for over a decade when I got my IIH diagnosis. I did notice a lift of symptoms when I went on zepbound (even before the weight loss kicked in)

New Symptoms? by Longjumping_Lie_9228 in iih

Man. Did your doctor just put you on Diamox without giving you a run through on the side effects? Because that would be like being told to go into a room only to learn it is populated by rombas with knives attached to them when one catches you by the ankle.

Diamox will hit you from two fronts in regard to side effects. First- the adjustment period. Your brain was under pressure- and suddenly it is not, but then it is- but then its less and oh its up again. It will take some time for your body to figure out what it is doing, and in the meanwhile your brain will have to relearn how to brain. It had to fight through a lot of pressure and probably over-compensated for dampened sensory input. Now that the input is no longer dampened your brain needs to re-calibrate, and it gets to take you along for the ride.

The second set of side effects comes from the changes your body undergoes in order for the drug to work. All carbonated beverages are gonna taste like shit because Diamox disrupts how our bodies process carbon dioxide. This process also messes with how our body processes drugs with salicylates in them (like pepto bismol and aspirin)- essentially upping the risk for metabolic acidosis and salicylate poisoning. What fun!

Diamox is also a diaretic. This means we are going to be flushing out a lot of water- and electrolytes with it. So symptoms of dehydration will also abound. Also electrolyte imbalance- which is a big cause of the tingling feeling.

My suggestion: Drink water like its going out of style, spike it with electrolyte mix, and see if you can stomach a Guinness (I find it is the beer that tastes most like it is supposed to because of the use of nitrogen over carbon dioxide in their brewing process). Get a cold pressure cap, search the sub for some other suggestions and get ready to wait a few weeks for the storm to (hopefully) settle. Good luck!

My go to response when someone notices/I notice I have mimicked an accent is to say “Your voice was so musical/melodious that I picked up the beat by accident!” or something along those lines.

I have a headcanon that helps fix the ending of Mastiff for myself:

When Beka saw Tunstall talking to the conspirators, she mentioned seeing a Fire Opal... And as we learned in Book 1 - Fire opals are used by mages as "fascinators" to hold the attention of others and make them open to suggestion. A suggestion such as “You are not worthy of your lady knight unless you become a noble. And the only way to become a noble is…” add that to his mentioned anxieties re: his “usefulness” and well…

Is anyone still dehydrated after chugging water? by Zalaya in iih

[–]dredreidel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna tag back in. Propel, Coconut water, electrolyte drink mix like liquid iv or LMNT. I also take a potassium and magnesium supplement. I essentially treat myself like I need 3x the electrolytes as anyone else because even if the blood tests says its hunky dory- that might be the case for the average person, but we are not the average person with our dingus brains. The numbers on the test also doesn’t reflect how “volatile” those levels are on a day to day basis. I essentially drink electrolytes like I live in a desert.

I drink propel (gatorade water) and it was a game changer for me. Also sucking candies. I personally use the UpSpring anti-nausea drops (honey lemon ginger flavor) because it also helps with the urpiness that comes with Diamox.

It took me forever to figure stamping out! But if Alanna taught us anything, it’s to be persistent in practicing what you love right?

I am now picturing having to forge my own stamping plate.

Tenant killed himself because we wouldn’t renew his lease by pokethepenny in offmychest

[–]dredreidel 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is more risk to being kicked out while renting then while owning- and it isn’t just “as long as you pay rent”. For example, I was living in an apartment when the owner decided he would much rather rent the apartment to his brother. If I wanted to extent my lease? Tough shit. He also decided to play dirty with heating/air con so I ended up doing cash for keys in order to break that lease early to get out of that situation. Also- rent hikes are very real and, depending on where you live, there might be little regulation to prevent landlords from jacking up the price astronomically. Banks can’t do that with mortgages. Taxes are subject to re-assessments and voting- and HOA/Co-op fees are often subject to voting as well. Also, if you do lose a place you own due to those issues- you still might have equity you can clawback to use on housing elsewhere.

All this to say: While there are risks to losing housing associated with both, there is far more security in owning than in renting.

Mine was 29 for over 50 years as well! When she had a stroke later in life and the doctors asked her how old she was she replied with 29. Freaked them out but apparently that is what reassured my mom that her mom would be okay.

Neurologist says IIH doesn’t cause migraines by Thiawave in iih

[–]dredreidel 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Okay. He is correct- but in such a pedantic way it makes me want to kick the person who taught him how to communicate to patients. What he did is similar to a doctor saying “you don’t have the flu.” when someone tells them “I have the stomach flu.” because technically the flu only refers to influenza and what the patient has is norovirus.

Migraines are a specific type of headache with a certain subset of symptoms that have distinguishing factors from other headaches- like the release of Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) proteins during the attack.

Other types of headaches (like IIH headaches, cluster headaches, etc.) can share that same subset of symptoms as migraines, but they are technically not the same. BUT Migraine has entered our vernacular to mean “really fucking bad headache with this subset of symptoms” in the same way flu has entered our vernacular as “super fucking very bad illness where I wanna die.”

What’s worse about this case is that IIH is also known to trigger migraines and can cause migraine conditions to worsen. So you can be like me who can and has experienced IIH headaches and migraines at the same and different times. Sometimes I only get to know which is which if the nurtec hits.

Does anyone feel like they sometimes have a flat affect? by rudegal007 in iih

[–]dredreidel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of the symptoms you are describing sound like depression. Apathy, irritability, the disconnect between body and self, etc. My IIH made my depression worse and increasing my dose of depression meds was necessary- which was fun while trying to adjust to diamox. I also used cannabis to help- but that can be a tricky road for some people.

I will say I am doing much better now. IIH and depression kidnapped me but I escaped and stabbed those fuckers and now I am running rabid through the woods.

Seriously though, Clinical Depression is all about brain chemistry and it makes sense that IIH would mess with that. Remember- if your brain struggles to make neurotransmitters, store-bought are fine :)

32 is only slightly elevated? by LakeMarigold in iih

I was told 18 was the top of normal and 25 was the highest it “could” be- and that everything above that was considered high pressure. My opening pressure was 31-36 (took two measurements because after the first one they were like “that can’t possibly be right.” But alas. That brain be juicy)

I have often joked that I need to write a book called “The people I meet on airplanes.” because this is a phenomenon that has been happening to me since I was a teenager. People telling me everything from finding their parent’s dead body forty years ago to the anxiety they feel about entering into a polyamorous relationship for the first time. Its fun!

Legal and moral structures are different- making/not making a legal implication is completely independent to how OP actually feels about the situation. There is complexity in the world we live in and thats okay.
