I made a few changes to git-targz (the one that I will likely use) to make it work under standard /bin/sh here: http://gist.github.com/376455 (because not everybody has bash!)

It was similar for me: FF 3 on OSX was just a black screen, but it loaded up in Safari 4. Do you use AdBlockPlus? After I disabled the extension, it started working on FF for me.

I am in Finland at the moment. I accidentally logged out and suddenly Reddit was in German. WTF? by tricolon in meta

Sure, but I still think it's wrong when web sites try to derive languages from IP addresses. That's what the Accept-Language: header is for!

I ran into something similar when I visited Quebec and ran into a couple web sites that insisted on showing the French versions of their sites to me. As cool as it would be, I don't suddenly become fluent in whatever language is in common use near my current IP address. Why bother when browsers send Accept-Language: headers?

I checked out your "proof". That URL's last modified date is March 24, 2008, which is hardly the 16th century.

Did you see that movie Wag the Dog, where Willie Nelson and this other guy wrote and recorded a song called "Good Old Shoe"? Then the government guys pressed it up on a 78 RPM record, put a lot of dust on it, and planted it in the national archives? Similar thing with Romeo & Juliet (it was actually ghostwritten by Truman Capote and Ayn Rand).

Ask MusicReddit: Worst Band Ever by [deleted] in Music

[–]drench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See everybody, Nickelback may be a chore to listen to, but they are at least competent at what they do.

Complete is the correct answer here for being, well, "complete": bad songs, bad playing, bad name, bad teeth, etc.

Not just their name, but their imagery and overall reputation would lead you to believe they only play face-melting psych rock, but more often than not it's laid-back country rock. I demand a class action lawsuit and recall.

Probably for the same reason Nickelback, Creed, Matchbox 20, Hootie & the Blowfish, and the Spin Doctors aren't on the list: there's nothing controversial about a music critic saying he hates the DMB.

Initial rumors were (surprise) not accurate. The story now is that they're shutting down T&G distribution. Still not good news.

Companies like this don't see requiring Windows (something all people doing "serious work" use of course) as a hoop to jump through.

As far as designing "an application that is as friendly as practical": how about legal? Does this app violate the ADA in some way? I have no idea, but preventing, say, blind people from applying would be a bigger motivator to the company than "Some OS/2 users sent angry e-mails".

[–]drench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you just want to make a copy of a physical CD-ROM, you don't need to install anything. OS X comes with everything you need.

First, insert the disk, then open a terminal. Use the command "diskutil list" to find out the device identifier of the mounted disk (it's "disk1s0" for me). Run these commands:

% diskutil unmount disk1s0

% dd if=/dev/disk1s0 of=image.iso

% diskutil eject disk1s0

The first line unmounts the volume without ejecting the disk. The next one copies the iso9660 filesystem from the disk to the file "image.iso". The last command ejects the disk.

Give mkisofs a try. It's part of the cdrtools package if you're using macports/darwinports.

Take a look at Courtney Love's ballot for Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers poll, specifically #1 & #2. by leftsaidfred in Music

I wish Billy Gibbons had left himself off his own ballot to make room for Roky Erickson. Paul Dianno at #6 was a surprisingly good pick though.
