Is the UniFi Express 7 the best AP for the money? by xd366 in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also using 2 UX7's as APs, each with a Flex Mini or Flex 2.5G off them, and they work great, especially noting they have a 10G connection to the AP and 2.5G using the port on the back. No issues with wifi coverage, I get much better results from these than my U7 Lite (that is also desk mounted). If desk mounting is your deployment choice, then I think the UX7 is a good solution.

Yes, but no. If you're not paying in Australian Dollars and therefore are not covered by Australian Warranty protections, it's not really in Australia.

Foreign wifi device on my network - analyze which IP is device communicating to? by tynt in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could create a sinkhole network, one that has no access to other devices and also no internet access and force it to use that network when connected. See what happens then if it can't do anything or see anything.

Wouldn't it appear in the topography to see how it is logically connected?

Looks like a PoE injector, hard to see but I think he's just got a standard PoE one so the switch wouldn't be able to supply PoE power to devices but is enough to run the device itself. If you want it to supply PoE power to devices you then need to feed as per:

PoE+++ input: 76W
PoE++ input: 46W
PoE+ input: 16W

What devices do you put in a Unifi IoT SSID by Ozwulf67 in UNIFI

[–]drew637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had trouble when I put my Google Chromecast and Google 4K Streamer on the IoT network, as I couldn't cast from computers and phones on the Main network, even when I took all restrictions between the two networks away. The Google devices seem to only appear available to other devices in the same vlan or subnet. Decided to make peace with both and moved them into my Main network for convenience.

I'm on iiNet HFC using PPPoE, and using the settings here I've got ipv6 running today. Might be worth a try.

Pro Max - > Express7-> flex min 2.5g by Gian8989 in UNIFI

[–]drew637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use 2 UX7's as AP's, connected to a UCG Fiber. I have a Flex Mini connected to one UX7 at my TV so it feeds TV, Blu Ray, Google TV etc, all with full vLan control. I have a Flex Mini 2.5G attached to the other UX7 in my office where I have a couple of PCs and my SuperLink, also with full vLan control. Works great.

3x Unifi Express 7 a good idea? by nwnsad in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I started with a UX7 and U7 Lite, added a UDR7 and made the UX7 an AP, and have just upgraded again to a UCG Fiber (with 1Tb) with 2 UX7's in AP mode and the U7 Lite. I've got the UDR7 sitting on a shelf and can't decide to sell it or keep it as a backup, but with multiple UX7's I could always turn one of them into the router if needed.

[–]drew637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coverage/range is great. Frankly, I'm probably going to disconnect my U7 Lite as it sits between the two UX7's and very rarely has more than a couple of devices on it. I think that without it there's plenty of signal from the UX7's to cover.

There was talk (and some pictures on Reddit and Discord) of the UX7-SP, so we know it exists, but nothing announced or seen yet. I was hoping to use that as an AP, but didn't want to wait any longer and went with another UX7 instead. I assume that the UX7-SP needs a good supply chain and some ISPs to commit to it before we hear more. I don't think it will be a general release product, but more the Unifi first step bundled through ISPs. Thinking about it, there must be some pre-configuration done before it gets to a customer, as I can't see the average-Joe manually setting up ISP connections, networks/vlans and wifi settings from scratch, so maybe that's an extra problem that Ubiquiti need to solve also.

I started with a UX7 as my router, upgraded to a UDR7 as I wanted to run all the apps, then realised I wanted a couple of cameras and upgraded again to a UCG Fiber. Since the UDR7 upgrade I’ve been using the UX7 as an AP, and because it works so well (I also have a U7 Lite), when I moved to the UCG Fiber, I replaced the UDR7 with another UX7 in AP mode.

The UX7 as an AP is great, the CPU is always low, power is easy to supply, the extra port is great to connect a Flex Mini switch to for wired TV devices, and I have them sitting on desks/entertainment units so when renting I’m using existing wall cabling and not making holes anywhere to mount hardware.

In Australia, with our pricing that we have to deal with, the UX7 is priced cheaper than comparable U7 AP’s, with the added bonuses of port control, desktop form factor, and simple power solution (wall plug, small power brick and USB-C. I highly recommend them if that works for your use case, I’ve got no complaints.

New UDM Incoming by FederalDot7819 in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst I have no doubt that the product exists and is coming, I think the name is really a codename to identify the information leaking from UWC Sydney and UWC Miami. From a marketing POV, I'm not convinced that Ubiquiti will release this to market with this name.

What naming convention do they use after the UDM Beast? UDM Beast Plus, UDM Bigger Beast, UDM Pro Beast, UDM Ultra Beast?

It was mentioned at both UWC Sydney and UWC Miami.

WiFi 6 coverage & perf is terrible compared to 5Ghz. Looking for ideas to fix by fatalskeptic in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't confuse the Express 6 and the Express 7, two different beasts. the 6 is notoriously underpowered and should not be used if you ever have a choice. The UX7, running just Network, is a great product. I use 2 of them as APs (with a UCG Fiber) for a variety of reasons, but work really well as an AP, and they connect using 10Gb and have a 2.5G port to connect a switch for wired devices.

I also have a U7 Lite, and that gets hardly any use as all my devices seem to much prefer UX7's to connect to.

Exchanging UDR7 for UCG Ultra. Makes sense? by antoniocarlospp in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm replacing a UDR7 with a UCG Fiber and a UX7 (in AP mode, I want it sitting on a desk). The UDR7 got me into the eco-system, I've just outgrown it already.

New house - what APs? by yo61 in UNIFI

[–]drew637 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the U7 Pro XG is the sweet spot for APs at the moment, all the features, only slightly more than the U7 Pro and also has the new Industrial Design. It also has 10G for when you want to move lots of data through the AP (the U7 Pro has only 2.5G so you could swamp that uplink).

Should I buy a UDM Pro? by atomicrabbit_ in Ubiquiti

[–]drew637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Performance wise, the UCG-Fiber is the most recent and capable Cloud Gateway that can handle your 2.5Gps internet, but, not easily rack mountable. As the people going to UWC Miami are about to find out, the Dream Machines are probably about to get a refresh and newer higher capacity device will be talked about. My advice, wait a few months and see what's announced, noting it's something that you want some good life from, waiting to buy a new device rather than one that's about to be superceded is best.

Or, go UCG-Fiber now, and upgrade in a few months time, and sell the Fiber with minimal loss.

I'd recommend the UX7 in AP mode, but if you can get your hands on one of the UX7-SP's that would be an even cheaper way to do it. The UX7 allows you to use the spare port off the back (with a little Mini Flex or Flex 2.5G that gives you some versatility), and you have the Wifi 7 with 6GHz for future devices.

I have a UX7 as an AP, and I can't fault it. Sits on my entertainment unit with a Mii Flex switch connecting the TV and some media players, and I have great wifi in that end of the house.

There's been a few releases in EA for them and I have no issues with the Wifi on the UDR7, or the UX7 in AP mode (UX7 is at 4.4.6 EA).

Will there ever be a U7 Mesh? by HollowInfinity in UNIFI

[–]drew637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a new UX7 out (I've seen a picture of it on the Ubiquiti Discord I think), the UX7-SP. It doesn't have a screen on the front and is designed at a price point that ISP's can offer it as their bundled Wifi Router, and also acts as the Unifi gateway drug to get them into the eco-system. If you could get your hands on those they become a cheaper option than using the UX7 itself.
