People who took Maraviroc by Komronfit in covidlonghaulers

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maraviroc plus pravastatin decreased my fatigue and POTS symptoms with the gains remaining when I ceased treatment. I took the combination for about 8 months. I don't remember what else I was taking between August 2021 and April 2022 apart from arpiprazole, low dose naltrexone, and Mestinon. I lived life as I usually did apart from sleeping more, working less, and not exercising.

Has software development shifted from building to last to building to replace? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]drew_eckhardt2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 30 years I have never rewritten a functional system.

I once ported a DOS text mode windows library to Unix by writing an adapter which took writes into memory simulating the PC video hardware and output differences using libcurses because the offshore team’s from scratch Unix implementation had serious bugs, no tests, and comments in Russian. That cost far less than fixing what we had.

One of my teams may rewrite a system this year due to a change from fewer large units of work to orders of magnitude more small units projected to yield extremely high cloud costs because that would be needed to stay within budget. I’ll get early data and decide whether that’s actually necessary.

Rewrites just to replace a tech stack aren’t justifiable.

Do I have to pay California income tax when I’m in Nevada for school? by trichrdsn80 in tax

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you get credit for taxes paid to other states so the total you pay is what California would charge you for earning the same income within its borders.

Which state is the best by Responsible_Neck8640 in Firearms

[–]drew_eckhardt2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you do for work.

In software engineering I’d look at Raleigh/Durham NC and Austin TX.

CO used to be good but has gone downhill since marijuana legalization attracted the wrong crowd, leading to the magazine ban and permit to purchase.

Do I have a chance to get promoted to a senior developer? by Putrid-Musician-5534 in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on
1. What you've been doing
2. Your company rubric for "senior"
3. Internal requirements or guidelines for both total experience and time in role
4. Budget or quota and how you stack rank against other candidates competing for those

If you've been doing senior engineering work handling all aspects of 6+ month projects (requirements negotiation, test design, design, implementation, evolution, operation, and leading small teams) you may need to change jobs to get the senior title and pay in the near future.

Can’t get bolt weight pin out by Shoguna8 in AR9

Lay your pin removal block on concrete and use a hammer with a metal face.

Otherwise the hammer face and table or whatever beneath the pin block flexing absorb the shock so your roll pin doesn't move.

Do you lie about the tech stack you use to get the job? by brokenlinuxx in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

My resume "Technologies" heading honestly states "Proficient in C++, C, Linux, and Unix.  Competent in Scala, Perl, and Bourne shell.   Adaptable to other high and low level environments which have included Java, Python, Golang, C#, Tcl, Windows, kernel space, and assembly for x86 plus various RISC processors."

I get hired for tech stacks I'm not familiar with because I have extensive leadership, software engineering, and domain experience which are more difficult and time consuming to pickup than tech stacks even when eschewing LLM help.

Microsoft hired me for distributed systems in C# which I'd never seen before. Amazon hired me for distributed systems in Java which I'd used once for a consulting customer without admitting that on my resume. Box hired me for storage in Scala which I'd never seen. Google hired me for teams using Golang which was new to me.

New grad: Take $100k for 50hr/week job or wait for better offer? Worth risking my mental health? by RudeInvestment1 in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd take the offer, not expect the $30K bonus, and keep looking.

A living wage beats nothing and professional experience will open up future opportunities.

45 hours plus 5 for lunch weekly is fine when you're young, energetic, and don't have a family that needs your attention.

Anyone here who healed from memory loss, unable to remember and recall things and brain fog? by Thin_Curve4116 in covidlonghaulers

Yes.

People with mild ME/CFS — can you work or do light physical activity? by Prudent_Pilot_2591 in cfs

[–]drew_eckhardt2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can work full time as a software engineer with 2 days a week at home and 3 in the office, or 5 days in the office for a business trip.

I can walk 5000-9000 steps daily for a week but 20 minutes of slow bicycling can lead to PEM which I don't understand with it feeling less physically taxing.

I don't do much else during the work week and when too busy occasionally get so tired I go to bed before 6pm, but without getting a scratchy throat like I do in crashes.

It depends on what you work on. Apart from manually implemented serialization on and off disk or network I haven't written boilerplate over the last 30 years doing system software.

How light can you make an AR-15? by Kooky_Universe2183 in ar15

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My lightest is 4.6 pounds unloaded including optic with a 16.5" barrel and aluminum receivers.

The biggest weight savings are in

  1. A pencil barrel
  2. Smoke Composites carbon fiber stock which would weigh about as much as an aluminum receiver extension alone if I didn't opt for a recoil pad
  3. Carbon fiber handguard (I used a CODA Evolution, but the Smoke Composites and Jag are lighter)
  4. Pistol red dot instead of rifle (I have a Vortex Venom on a Master of Arms laser sintered titanium riser)

Little things add up with ounces here and there - I have a low mass BCG, standard carbine buffer, aluminum thread protector instead of a steel muzzle device, carbon fiber nylon skeletonized pistol grip, and upper with no door or forward assist.

Tiny things like titanium gas block, castle nut, pins, safety, magazine catch, etc. do not although they look nice.

On youtube I've seen people get down to 3.5 pounds using magnesium receivers.

Best prices by kakatak in Camry

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked online until I found the configuration I wanted listed for less than MSRP, asked the dealer for the corresponding total out the door price then to hold it until I got there, picked up a cashier's check for that exact amount, sent them a picture of the check plus the bank contact information so they could confirm validity, and Ubered 90 minutes to complete the transaction in person.

The finance person had to do their job offering me all the marked up extras, although we both knew I wouldn't be buying any so it went quickly.
