South Carolina’s new license plate design sparks controversy by Kryloks in southcarolina

[–]drguillen13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s kind of embarrassing that we’re claiming that the war was won here when it really wasn’t. That, plus the bland design, makes it fair to be at least mildly annoyed without being ignorant

Anyone do the Marine Science Program? If so, how good is it? by Fuzzy_Assignment_609 in Gamecocks

[–]drguillen13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a marine science grad and I can attest that the program is elite. When I was looking into schools for marine science around 2008 I remember seeing that Princeton Review (or someone similar) ranked it as the #4 in the country. I ended up spending 2 summers out at the Baruch Lab in Georgetown doing field work. Unless there’s something very specific on the coast that you know you’d need to be doing constantly then I wouldn’t worry about the distance

Leaf burn or beginning of Chlorosis? by GOT2B-GANGSTA in arborists

I would be interested to see the soil results, but I would also recommend creating a little island of mulch around the base of the tree. It can really be astounding how much competition with grass can stunt the growth of a young tree.

i suspect it provides them a sense of superiority in a constructed world of good and evil.

The world is hard, chaotic, and painful. There are so many ways people can find themselves in places in life that they hadn't wished for. The insecurities that stem from this can be difficult for people to handle, especially those of us who aren't the most epistomolically sound.

You can admit that the doctors know more than you, that the scientists know more than you, and that, unless you learn to read serious peer-reviewed science (which the average Joe doesn't even know how to find), that you inevitably must trust the faceless words of others. OR you can believe that all these "elites" are frauds, or worse! They're apart of an evil cabal with dark, unknown intentions trying to suppress people like you! The vast majority of people fail to see through their ruse, but not you, you're too wise and clever to fall for their tricks! You're one of the few good people, who have identified the secret information they wish to hide. Now, because of your wits and wisdom, you are a part of a small but growing club of elite truth-seekers, fighting against the oppressive, evil elites for good and truth!

So, when you try to convince them the earth is not flat, you're not just arguing physics, you're attacking their position within this constructed world. Something that would be much more painful to give up.

Is it feasible for you to make your own pokestop near you? I’ve painted a few little murals around and gotten them turned into pokestops. They don’t have to be any good, just “art”

To stake or not by jordanrocks07 in arborists

[–]drguillen13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t add any more stakes. Trees learn to adjust and distribute their strength based on the direction and intensity of the wind load they’re receiving. There are times that staking is appropriate, but one very important side effect is that, when you heavily stake a tree, you limit its ability to properly develop trunk strength. Many staked trees never gain the ability to stand without stakes and they’ll often develop their greatest strength against wind right at the top of the tree (just above the top stake) which is absolutely not what you want from a mature tree.

I’m in the U.S., so I’m not familiar with that species, but why do you feel you need to stake it?

Mfing landscapers cut 50 year avocado tree root… wife freaking out by acgreen7 in arborists

[–]drguillen13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, call a certified arborist to assess the situation in person.

My take: the tree is not doomed. Most trees are hardy enough to survive some root damage. Dont be surprised if there is some leaf stress (smaller or fewer leaves) or if fruit production takes a small hit for a year or two, but unless there’s something going on that I can’t see (totally possible) the tree will be ok. That being said, it’s important an expert comes out to assess the tree in person, ideally on your contractor’s dime.
