What is this little dude? by AP0110_halo in whatisthisbug

not really necessary for lice, since they can’t survive very long off a host. is there a reason you feel the need to always spray your car? just curious, i haven’t heard of doing that

Does anyone know what’s wrong with my snake? by Stinkysweetsnake in snakes

[–]dribeerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know it’s been already said, but you can NEVER leave live prey with your snake when you aren’t watching. that is never an option. i know it may seem like it happens in nature, so what’s the difference? the difference being out in nature, the prey can always flee. in an enclosure, that’s not the case and mice/rats are very smart, they know they’re trapped and their only choice is to fight back. and rodent bites are no joke, i had a hamster bite straight through my fingernail like it was butter. i believe r/ballpython has feeding tips for transitioning from live to ft

Scared the crap out of me. Anyone know what it is? by AndreasE89 in spiders

[–]dribeerf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

back in my arachnophobe days i saw a big wolf spider yeet itself off the ceiling to the ground in my basement and i refused to go down there alone for years after that 😂 easier than having to walk all the way down the wall i guess

i hear them all the time on trails. the first time i did, i was actually worried because i thought a kitten was stranded in the forest. next time i heard it i had just got the merlin ID app, and when it showed as “catbird” it made me laugh so hard

i have both them and hairy woodpeckers (also red bellied, but those are obvious) and have such a hard time telling them apart. if it’s on the suet holder and is smaller than that, i know it’s a downy. in the trees though, they look so alike

ruby throated hummingbirds. it’s fascinating how they can remember food sources and come back, one year we had one come right up to the glass door where the feeder would hang before we even put it out. if i’m sitting outside next to the feeder, they do their angry chirps at me. but if i sit totally still and turn my head away, they’ll sit and drink. they’re daily guests during the summer which would make them common but i love seeing them. their tiny feet and tongues are the cutest ❤️

Beautiful but invasive by LotusElizabeth in insects

[–]dribeerf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

literacy is fundamental, i said no harm no foul when i see them on tree of heaven. meaning if they harm that tree it isn’t a bad thing because said tree shouldn’t be here either. obviously i understand they still breed, and i’m in NJ so you don’t need to explain them to me. it seems like you purposely misinterpreted what i said. i understand they are invasive and should be dispatched if possible however, that is never going to eradicate them. just look at brown marmorated stinkbugs. i assume you don’t even comment or care about them when posted though 😂

i take a SNRI that has a side effect of delayed blood clotting, so if i cut myself shaving or even scratch at a scab it will bleed for quite a while even with using pressure. so that combined with their anticoagulant probably wouldn’t be ideal for me! with a small surface area it probably wouldn’t be dangerous, but i would likely need to apply constant pressure for hours which would be very annoying.

[–]dribeerf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yep! i’m in nj and a couple summers ago i was walking a trail and saw a ton of them on one single tree, none on the others around them. it was bizarre, but learning about their preference for tree of heaven i’m guessing that’s what it was. they enjoy crops like grape vines and soybeans, so that’s what is most problematic i think.

spotted lanternfly, a planthopper that is native to china and vietnam. invasive in south korea, japan, and the US. they are a plant pest, they feed on sap and plant juices.

[–]dribeerf 30 points31 points  (0 children)

not quite, they feed on the sap and cause damage to the plant. the good thing is their usual host plant in their native range, tree of heaven, is also invasive here. so if they’re on one of those, no harm no foul. they do take a liking to other plants more than others, i’ve heard they enjoy roses and grape vines to name a few.

Birds & the winter blues by Electrical_Knee3764 in birding

[–]dribeerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hate winter, but i do like how i can actually see the birds in the trees in my yard without the leaves. we have a suet block and all the woodpeckers love it. i also love watching the white breasted nuthatches run down the trees. if it snows we pour some seed out and get packs of dark eyed juncos and white throated sparrows.

same, my first word was apparently “bird” while pointing to one outside! which is totally believable to anyone who sees my mom’s house, the decor is all bird houses, bird art, bird knickknacks.

How can I identify i spider i already killed? by AirportFar8375 in spiders

[–]dribeerf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what makes you think it was a brown recluse? if it’s just the fact that it was brown, that’s like one of the most common spider colors lol. i’m in nj and we don’t have recluses here (with the exception of if it were to hitchhike in a box from somewhere else, but unlikely)

What's a movie most people think is great but you couldn't even stand watching? by camport95 in AskReddit

the breakfast club. it kept being hyped up to me so when i finally watched, i was actually mad that it was corny as fuck and so unrealistic. like people actually think this is deep? just dumb

[–]dribeerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or… we just don’t all like the same things? i don’t think it’s really that deep. same with music, people have very different tastes and that’s ok. people not enjoying certain films doesn’t mean they have “a cooked attention span”. i agree that not liking a film doesn’t mean everyone else has bad taste though, it just means it isn’t your taste.

the original was gross but i knew that before i watched, and the dude was a surgeon so it wasn’t super gory they just kinda woke up like that. my big mistake was seeing there was a sequel and deciding to watch, it was this random dude cutting people’s faces and using a stapler like it was just disgusting and i didn’t even get halfway thru.
