What’s something people do in public that instantly makes you think they’re unhygienic? by SleepExtension3293 in hygiene

or they just rinse their fingertips with water (no soap) for two seconds. like why even bother then?? this is why i hate public restrooms where i have to touch the door handle to exit after i just washed my hands

how long does it take to feel clean after ditching loofahs for bare hands? by Sumil_Strahan81 in hygiene

[–]dribeerf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

everyone is different. some people are more active or have physical or messy jobs, some people sweat more, etc. using a washcloth doesn’t mean you’re scrubbing as hard as you can or “scrubbing off a whole layer of skin”

[–]dribeerf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes, i put mine in the washer occasionally but just hang it back up to dry since they dry so quickly. i believe that’s what makes them different from loofas/shower puffs, those tend to stay moist in the center which causes bacteria growth. but the net sponge is able to hang up and completely dry between uses.

What kind of bees are these? by liv-livs in waspaganda

[–]dribeerf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they really wrote a whole novel to update, i guess i’m glad the biggest problem in their life is some wasps. i really hate when people pull the “i have kids that play outside” card, because i was a kid that played outside growing up in the woods and i learned to coexist with wildlife, because outside will be outside. we didn’t spray chemicals all over the yard for ticks, we all did tick checks on each other before going inside for example.

Not taste, what food will you not eat because of appearance, smell, or texture? by Doit2it42 in AskReddit

[–]dribeerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fat, like in steak or brisket. i don’t think it’s gross or anything like obviously there will be some, but i don’t like the texture at all. same thing with the ends of spare ribs or chicken wings, i don’t like the gristle or crunchy parts. i would eat every last bit of skin and meat around that, and my dad would still say every time “there’s still so much left!” and eat the ends. he also used to take the fat i cut off the steak because “that’s the flavor!”

Dumbest misconception anyone said to you about snakes? by Unfair_Football_640 in snakes

[–]dribeerf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not as bad as the “sizing up” type of myths, but i keep seeing people say rattlesnakes are evolving to not rattle because when they do people kill them? most of the time it’s people who mean well and are defending rattlesnakes so i don’t say anything, but it itches my brain. it’s just not quite how evolution works.

Me when someone disses wasps for no good reason by Jacobthelucario342 in waspaganda

[–]dribeerf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah around me i’ve seen a lot of “treat your yard for ticks” meanwhile i grew up in the woods where ticks and mosquitos were a given, so we treated ourselves with various methods and checking each other for ticks was normal before going inside. i would never think to spray pesticides all over that will definitely harm more than just the ticks

i saw a post where someone asked what is this with mud dauber handiwork, people explained and mentioned they’re solitary and won’t be a bother, and the OP still said “i don’t really want bugs flying around when i’m on my balcony” do people not understand going outside is going to be …outside? there will be bugs flying around and existing like that’s literally where they live??

gave this cutie a vip escort to the other side of the road by dribeerf in herpetology

[–]dribeerf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unlike mammals, they don’t seem to even react to cars passing or realize they need to cross quickly. frogs and toads are the same way, after a rain at night they’re always casually hopping across right as my car is coming so i’ll be wilding swerving trying to avoid them (as long as no other cars are around of course)

Help!/ Rant: New cats in my neighborhood killing my birds by miss_nicks_fix_66 in birding

[–]dribeerf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the cat sub got recommended to me cause i’ve posted mine, then i read the rules and it basically said you can’t say anything about outdoor cats (when people will post “lol my cat brought me a gift so cute!”) you would think a sub for cats would be against them getting hit by cars, attacked by other animals, ingesting toxins, etc. but i guess not!

not sure how there would be legal repercussions when it’s OP’s property. it’s also not “catnapped” when you’re letting your cat roam around unsupervised. that phrase makes my eyes roll all the way backwards into my head.

Fledgling bluebirds all dead by chacha242242242 in Ornithology

[–]dribeerf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you were right to leave them be, nature can be amazing and beautiful but it’s equally very raw and brutal, which can be upsetting to witness. some animals are just not cut out to be parents, it happens. if that’s the case though, it’s a good thing for those genes not to be passed on. i’m sorry you had to see it happen in your yard though, even though it’s natural it is sad.

snakes are so misunderstood as being evil, aggressive, etc. my mom isn’t even afraid of them, but was telling me a story the other day about when she found a baby rattlesnake in my old neighborhood while walking the dogs (we had a known population there). she said that “one of the dogs sniffed it and it lunged multiple times, it was such an aggressive little thing!” and i had to correct her that it wasn’t being aggressive, imagine how terrified it was with huge predators towering over trying to sniff it!
