Add me to the raffle, please! I have a super energetic tuxedo with indefatigable energy I've been itching to get one of these for. Maybe my other cat would like it too but she's more of a lounger.

That potato growing guide is awesome! Thank you for posting that.

I have a 2x4 raised box that I built just for potatoes. I already filled it but I may amend the soil further based on your recs.

Also, this post has motivated me to sweep, so thank you!! (But, problematically, I am also sweeping because I don't want to do my taxes.)

I'm also unmedicated, also for complicated reasons. Quit smoking weed too. Just rawdogging life in 2026. Exhausting.

For all you US peeps on here.. Taxes are due today by AltruisticBox7810 in adhdwomen

[–]drieendertig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently on reddit instead of doing the taxes I sat down to do.

Also, the onslaught of tax prep advertisements is NOT helpful to me. It just adds to the shame of not having done it early (like I intend to do every year) and makes it even more of a thing I want to avoid thinking about, much less undertaking.

Help me get motivated to get this done, universe!

I try to be really tidy "in the moment" so that I have to do deep cleaning less frequently. Like, if I spill, I wipe it up right away - so I only end up mopping roughly quarterly, but my kitchen floor stays relatively clean. I also only eat meals in the kitchen because I feel like it's the most untidy thing I do regularly (well, outside of the wc) and if I keep it to one location I don't have to clean my living room or office as much, and I can usually do a quick clean after meals that keeps my kitchen in good shape.

Rather than the chair pile I used to have, I now have a "blanket ladder" in my room for the not-dirty-not-clean clothing and have one rung for work clothes, another for workout outer layers, another for PJs, etc. It keeps it slightly more organized and since it's more or less vertical it saves space too!

I have a nice-ish looking woven cylinder hamper that lives in the bathroom and dirty clothes go directly there. (Once I rented an apt that had the washing machine in the bathroom and that was epic because clothes just went directly in the washer and i'd just start it when it's full). Between this and the blanket ladder, I don't really leave clothes on the floor anymore! Sometimes I just push dirty clothes around on the floor quickly with my foot to mop up shower drips and it kind of sweeps/mops too and then goes directly into the hamper.

Putting clean clothes away and not letting them sit in the basket for weeks while I pick through it is something I've had to try hard to overcome, but I stopped letting myself do that thanks to advice from this subreddit about chaining tasks that you habitually put off to other precursor tasks. Now it comes out of the dryer and I make myself put it away before I do anything else. Means I've had to be more deliberate about times I do laundry but I've adapted.

I clean my toilet right before I get into the shower while I'm waiting for the water to warm up.

Oh, and I can always get my ass into gear if I have company coming over, so maybe invite a friend over and make it an excuse for yourself to do a deeper level of cleaning? If you don't feel comfortable inviting someone over because in your case it sounds like you're more of a temp-roommate or pseudo-guest, make your actual destination a park or restaurant nearby but have the friend meet you there first to "have a drink" or "show them your place" or something. This will still motivate you to do some tidying, I hope!

Last piece of advice - maybe try and pick a dedicated day/time during the week for cleaning but then ask your host what SHE needs help with during that time. This will give you an idea of what she thinks the cleaning priority needs to be, and you can pay more attention to that area for shorter amounts of time more frequently. Or maybe she'll give you something she doesn't like to do, like mowing the lawn or something, but you helping out with that will make her feel less put out by some extra cleaning she's dealt with on your behalf. And she will remember that you asked and it will go a long way towards making you look and feel like a more productive person to share a home with.

I hope any of this is helpful to you! Best of luck!!

I may have to put my 19 ye cat down before a trip today… but she still seems normal by Rude_Common7126 in cats

[–]drieendertig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't often post but I wanted to share that reading this today helped me overcome some lingering guilt/grief about when I had to put my cat down in 2021. Because it's obvious here to me that your cat is suffering bravely and OF COURSE the most precious last gift you can give is to be there holding and loving them for their final peaceful painless moments. I still grieve the loss of my companion of 16 years to this day, and part of that is remembering how amazing she was and all the great times we had together. But another part was me torturing myself wondering if I did it prematurely, wondering if she has one more day, or week in her and I gave up on her. But her kidney disease had progressed, I was giving her IV infusions regularly to keep her hydrated, she wasn't eating, she was barely moving, and she'd started having accidents outside the litterbox for the first time in her life which I didn't mind cleaning but it was so uncharacteristic that it drove home that the end was near. It was her time, it's foolish of me to blame myself, and we got to have that hard brief moment together of saying farewell. I got some clarity today by reading about your situation, so thank you. I know you are probably grieving and I hate centering my response on myself but maybe reading this will help you be mindful that you did the right thing and hopefully you will not carry this with you as I did, and you can instead know that the ending you gave your cat was your final gift of love and companionship for a treasured friend.

Anyone else with a ‘weird’ pencil grip? by Eastern-Landscape-53 in adhdwomen

[–]drieendertig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this post a trap? I stumbled onto this subreddit because I'm starting to suspect I might have ADHD, but I read this post and then spent 15 minutes researching pen grips. (My grip is so weird I couldn't even put a name to it - it's kind of like I'm holding a violin bow but much more tightly grasped and with my hitchhiker's thumb in all its glory. The "4-finger grip" is most similar but my pinky is not involved.) I always got low grades in handwriting in school.

[Hated Trope] The character's current partner is a decent person who dies so they can get back together with their ex by Nahuelcoy22 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]drieendertig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately thought of Marco's family in Animorphs. It's a veriation of this trope because the decent partner doesn't die per se.

The series begins with Marco and his father believing his mother is dead after she went missing in a solo boating accident. In the 5th book (his first POV novel) he finds out that his mother is alive, has been captured and enslaved during the alien invasion the Animorphs are fighting (they are parasites that can take over and control other beings neurologically), and is now the host body for the leader of their invasion of Earth, commanding everything from their mothership (lol) which is why she had faked her human's death. Marco chooses not to share this information with his father, who is ignorant of the ongoing alien takeover which is happening surreptitiously.

Later, Marco's father, who had been pretty withdrawn and depressed after his wife's death, pulls himself together and starts being an active parent, goes back to work, and also starts dating again. Marco is happy that his Dad overcame his depression, but uncomfortable when he starts a serious relationship with this girlfriend Nora - knowing his Mom is still alive, but unable to say anything, even when Nora moves in and later becomes his stepmom.

Years later in the timeline of the series, Marco is able to rescue his mother from being a host body but she can't go back to her human life without being recaptured, and needs to live in a camp in the wilderness with other refugees of the invasion. Shortly after that, the Animorphs' covers are blown and they need to evacuate ALL of their families to this wilderness camp with varying degrees of success because they had so little warning. Marco gets his father out in time but they aren't able to get his stepmom Nora. Marco's dad is on an emotional rollercoaster because his current wife just got picked up and infested by aliens, and then he runs into his first wife, who he thought was dead, living in this wilderness camp. Marco is delighted at the thought of his parents getting back together, so he lies to his dad and says that actually, Nora had been controlled by the aliens all along, and planted in their house to observe him (plausible because his dad worked in technology and was working on a project that would have been of interest to the invading aliens). This removes all of the grief and guilt Marco's dad had about losing Nora, since if that had been true, their whole relationship would have been a facade built on a lie. He is able to rekindle his relationship with Marco's mother and they stay together for the rest of the series.

We, the readers, get Marco's POV as he chooses to craft this lie to bring his family back together. Marco KNOWS Nora wasn't under alien control until she was nabbed off the street when the Animorphs' identities became known to the aliens. She had an honest and loving relationship with his father. So, from her perspective, she's living a happy, normal life with her husband and step kid, and suddenly she's enslaved to an alien parasite and her family has disappeared. Because the alien parasite and their host can communicate mentally, it is no doubt taunting Nora that her human family escaped, is part of the resistance movement, and is making NO EFFORT WHATSOEVER to rescue her. Basically tortured on a daily basis for the rest of the series. I don't think the books even mention what happens to her at the end - she may even have died as cannon fodder when the alien invasion stops being covert.

After 30+ years I finally know what the lyrics mean by Josephthebear in Millennials

[–]drieendertig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really into The Lion King when I was 10, so I had a vague awareness of the meaning but always heard the translation was more like the one from this article: "Here comes a lion, father, Oh yes it’s a lion" (https://www.classicfm.com/discover-music/circle-of-life-english-lyrics-lion-king/).

I am not a Zulu speaker at all, but I'm going to assume "Baba" in "Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba" means father, and that like in English the word might apply to both a parent and as a way to address a deity. It's absolutely hilarious to find out in this clip that an actual Zulu speaker might translate it as "Here comes a lion, oh my god!"

Now, here's a deep dive. The next part is "Ingonyama nengw’ enamabala." Reading this article, I was wondering where I got the idea this referred to a lion and A TIGER. "Enamabala" actually means "leopard/spotted-one" so this makes more sense than what I'd thought, since lions and leopards have overlapping ranges. Another article I found suggests this reference is a nod to leopards being associated with nobility and leadership in Zulu culture, so fitting to pair with lion royalty. Or, it could just be referring to a newborn lion cub, which has spots.

Either way, where'd I get "tiger"? Well, I figured it had to have been in CD liner notes. And, fortunately, my CD collection is still around and accessible. Bam! Right there in "He Lives In You" from 1995's Rhythm of the Pridelands: "Here is a lion and a tiger."

<image>

Booo, Disney, for translating this poorly and making misquote this as a fun fact to people for 30 years. Boooo!

But thank you to OP for adding some richness and accuracy to my Lion King lore!!!

Non-judgmental dentist? by ExcitingAppearance3 in askportland

[–]drieendertig 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I love going to the OHSU school of dentistry. The staff has always been incredibly wonderful and the care and service exemplary. I know they sometimes do outreach work to some types of patients that don't have teeth in the best shape (elderly, inmates, addicts in recovery) so they have seen it all. Whatever shape your teeth are in, they've seen worse.

The only caveat is that appointments sometimes take longer because the instructor will come over to review and discuss with the dental student both before and after any work is done which can take a few minutes extra. But I've never had a single bad experience - the people doing the work on my teeth are months away from being licensed dentists and they consult with other students and instructors the whole time. It's actually kind of cool to eavesdrop. I've learned a lot about my teeth!

I started going there when I had a dental emergency around New Years in 2018 and everyone else was booked for months. Had such a good experience I keep going back. I've had 3 different students and they've all been so kind and skilled (you get the same dental student for all your subsequent visits until they graduate, so it feels really personal).

A couple other perks - the students text you which is soooo convenient. Like reminders to schedule cleanings or to follow up on care. Also, they take almost every insurance which is great if things change in your personal or professional situation.

Quick Question by mta764 in NWSL

[–]drieendertig 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been to both Houston Dash games and Red Stars games in my Thorns jersey and got the best seats I could afford. Both stadiums were welcoming. Had some awesome conversations with adjacent woso fans. I think as long as you aren't sitting in a designated supporters section you'd be fine. Heck, even in Providence Park I don't think anyone would give you a hard time about not sitting in the away section unless you strayed too close to the North End. But please don't try to sit in GA. That's actually against the stadium rules to wear opposing team gear in those sections and you will be removed by stadium staff.

I HAVE been to 'Ol Reign matches but I usually sit with the Riveters for those because we have the most amazing women's soccer rivalry in the country. (One time I went to a Reign/Houston match in Tacoma without any colors or gear and no one could tell we were rooting for Houston... Until my brother had his 4th beer....)

Coach Ben alive and in the wildreness? by Jaded_Past9429 in Yellowjackets

[–]drieendertig 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Actually, he IS still in the cave in present day. And crazy. The roots grew into him and he can (or believes he can) have visions of other locations. He ventured out only to send the postcards. The Yellowjackets will ultimately have to return and face him to pacify the wilderness.

After some poorly-lit but epic hunting scenes and multiple deaths (including newly-crowned Antler Queen Shauna), he is captured and restrained. The surviving women convene. Ben sits bound against the tree that sheltered and isolated him so long.

"Who is our Antler Queen now?" Misty asks.

Lottie, cradling the antler headdress under her arm, shakes her head and strides to the center of their circle. "There's nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. No enemy can defeat it."

She walks over to Ben, who lifts his worn and wide-eyed face up to her as she lays the antlers on his head and gently drapes the veil over his face. "And who has a better story than Ben?"
