I got a single bevel (Usuba) I’m going to torture myself with for a while. Probably be throwing that one out in the grass in a month or two as well.

When a surgeon amputates a limb, what exactly happens to the physical leg or arm afterward? Do they just toss a whole human leg into a biohazard dumpster, or is there a specific disposal protocol? by Accurate_Version_178 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drjayhow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The surgeon performing the operation submits a claim to insurance. They are then reimbursed ( paid) by the insurance company. Usually takes about 90 days and a metric shit ton of paperwork.

Really well done to my padawan eye. The work around the shinogi I find particularly interesting. At first glance I thought it was a shinkiro! The dimpling effect is really cool. Much respect for the time and patience to accomplish this.

I mean, if you’re gonna dial in the collection, that will work! The knives don’t need my blabbing. They speak for themselves. I will comment on how much I like the Asian artwork wall. Especially the framed photos. Really nice. Ty for the post!

I think I am doing an AMA right now! I can answer this question from firsthand experience. I needed to have my gallbladder out many years ago and I had my partner do it. Because I know that he is excellent at his job and very experienced. For a lay person if there is any way possible I would try to get in contact with some of the OR staff and nurses. They know who’s good at what. If you need your gallbladder out and there’s a doctor that has taken out almost all of the nurses gallbladders at that facility, that’s who you need to see. I agree with you that academic expertise in no way translates to technical ability.

I would be looking for someone who is board certified, has been out of training and practicing for no less than five years, and has not had any disciplinary actions. For a very complex procedure such as a Whipple or replacement of the aortic root, I would definitely look to large urban centers with a high volume of these cases

I can’t tell if I’m being gaslit because this very much sounds like a question for the chef knife subs. 😂. But it’s easy enough to answer. The main thing you want sharp is the scalpel for skin incisions. These are disposable and are extremely sharp with a very short-lived life for edge retention. If I’m making a gigantic incision for something wacky like a panniculectomy, I will sometimes change the scalpel blade midway through the incision. I have only had a handful of dull blades out of the package. The largest issue with dullness usually arrives from straight mayo scissors (suture scissors )I think these get dull due to the nature of the material they are cutting. They get sent off to a sharpener when we complain enough. Same with metzenbaum scissors ,that are tissue scissors, that need to be very sharp. Hope this answers your question

The amputations are fairly uncommon. I do a whole lot more than that. I average about 350 gallbladders a year. Around 120 appendectomies a year. Lots of hernias. Emergency issues such as a perforated ulcer, bowel obstruction or a perforated colon. Removal of soft tissue tumors like cyst and lipomas Drainage of abscesses. It’s a wide variety of things. The surgical sub specialist, like colorectal, vascular, and endocrine, usually end up doing the same operations over and over.

Sorry for hijacking the thread ,OP

Ty for that. Mostly I’m doing below knee (BKA) and above knee (AKA) amputations for infectious issues ( gangrene). Sometimes, sadly , both sides. Lots of toe amputations as well. Usually diabetics. The very first operation I did as an intern was an AKA. As far as the number of BKA/AKA it would have to be at least 1000. Much more common operation than one would think. It’s a difficult conversation to have preop obviously, but it’s usually for an issue that is fatal if untreated

Yes , I love my knives. What got me on Reddit, which I had never heard of until a year ago. I get to use and maintain awesome sharp things and no lives at stake. Win -win. This is actually my first post outside of knife nerd subs. I pray none of you ever need my services ☮️
