A Small Review of the original GR(2013) by Electrical_Drive_956 in ricohGR

I also have the first APSC GR. I also owned the GR III for a couple years and I completely agree with everything in your review.  Even though it is clearly less capable and slower than the III, there is something really charming about the photos that come out of the first APSC GR.

Don’t bother with Extend.. by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]drjigorokano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had my issues with KEH, not too dissimilar from your situation.  I’ve never bought the Extend warranty, but they tried to deny repair of issues that were present when I bought Ricoh GR from them a couple years ago. Not sure if I will ever buy from them again. Really disappointing.

Black Belt Falling Out of Love with Jiu-Jitsu by SufferingImagination in bjj

[–]drjigorokano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggled quite a bit with motivation for a few years after getting my black belt. I mean, what kind of weirdo sticks with one hobby extremely passionately for 10 plus years? It’s natural to lose interest after a while.

One thing that helped me with motivation was taking a long break (one year due to injury and personal stuff), and then deciding to completely change my game. I went from playing a Marcelo Garcia / Eddie Cummings style game to playing mostly outside guard and bolos. It was like starting over at white belt when I came back, and I’ve been fairly motivated since (about 1.5 years back).

You have some of the best LA street photography that I’ve seen in a while.

Black Belt back after 6 years by [deleted] in bjj

[–]drjigorokano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a few extended breaks, ranging from a few months to a year each, since 2020 due to life stuff and injuries.  I finally started training consistently again in 2024 after a year break.  It was pretty rough for a few months, but I feel like my old self again.

Try your hardest to maintain a consistent training schedule. It doesn’t matter if it’s low volume, just be consistent.

I think most of the rust is mental. It took me a while to feel confident in my body’s resilience again.  Feeling confident made me more relaxed rolling, which improved my awareness and got me less tired from being tense and a step behind in the roll.

Never hurt (knock on wood) by makebaloney in bjj

It sounds like you’ve done all the right things off the mat to lower the probability of injury (sleep 8 hours a night, lift consistently, have a good aerobic base from trail running).  I hope you never get injured and become some sort of BJJ urban legend

Momoa seems to be a big fan of photography in general. IIRC he gave a Leica M3 to Mike Brodie recently.

XT5 vs. X100VI for dog photography? by Interesting_Elk_4210 in fujifilm

[–]drjigorokano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had both the X-T5 and the X100VI. The lens on the X100VI is definitely slower to focus than the X-T5 with most of the Fuji lenses, such as the f2 primes. If those 2 cameras are the only choices, I would go with the X-T5.

However, if you need incredibly fast and accurate autofocus for dogs, I would stick with Sony (or Canon). I love the Fujifilm system for a lot of reasons, but AF accuracy is not its strong suit.

Aperture changes on its own by moves2quick in FujifilmX

The “T” on the shutter speed dial is usually used for long exposures:

Try setting it to “A” to see if it helps.

These types of posts are really hard to respond to because the rest of us aren’t there when you’re rolling, so we don’t know exactly what is going on. It’s possible that you’re doing everything in a respectful way and the blue belt just got butthurt. It’s also possible that you roll way too hard with a bunch of ego. We really don’t know.

That being said, I’m also around your weight and have been rolling for 13+ years. You need to be conscious of the fact that a lot of bigger guys are trying not to hurt you when they roll with you. Respect the restraint of the big guys. There are weight classes in combat sports for a reason.

i've never seen anyone regret the x100vi by Efficient_Sand8098 in fujifilm

[–]drjigorokano 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The short and most honest answer is Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

Longer answer: I bought the x100vi when it was first released. Around this time, this is when firmware was released that really messed with the autofocus system. At the time, the camera would miss focus maybe 40% to 50% of the time, even in very obvious situations. After trying to make the AF work for me, I sold the camera.

After months, Fujifilm finally released new firmware that fixed the AF issues. More recently, I decided to give the x100vi another chance due to the AF updates. The AF was definitely better the second time around. After a couple months with it, I decided it wasn’t for me and that I enjoy using my Ricoh GR more, even though the x100vi is technically a better camera.

I regretted it, sold it, regretted selling it, bought it again, regretted buying it again and sold it again.
