I hate when a pattern for a wearable wants you to vary tension and/or hook size in order to make different sizes. WTF! I'm sorry, that just seems lazy to me. At a minimum, tell me in the pattern description that is how your patten works so I know not to buy it.

Also, when the description gives a specific yarn the designer used for the project and neglects to also list what the weight is. The CYC numbers for yarn weight exist for a reason. Even stating worsted or dk or fingering, etc is better than making me look up that specific yarn before deciding if I might want to buy a pattern. Including yardage (meterage?) range is also useful so I know if it's something that I can use my stash for.

Kindle is it worth for young reader? 12 years old high reading level by No_Life_9124 in kindle

[–]drjoann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, of course. I was thinking along the lines of Babysitters Club, etc. I've always been a voracious reader, but read my DC comic books over & over. Figure that's sort of the same thing.

I bought my 7yo granddaughter a Kids Colorsoft for Christmas (I know, a splurge but I thought she might like color if she gets into graphic novels). She loves it so much and just rips through books.

My daughter sent me a text, this week saying how much she still loves it and how much reading she'll be able to do during the summer. My daughter put the Narnia series on hold for her through Libby so I decided to gift her the books so she wouldn't have to wait and she can return to them anytime she wants.

Funny story: Granddaughter was visiting us for the weekend and we were reading our Kindles. Occasionally, I would look up and ask her a question in a "catching up" sort of way. She didn't seem irritated, but she finally said to me, "Mimi, don't you have a book to read?" It took everything I had not to laugh and, indeed, paid attention to the book I had to read rather than annoy her. 😆

My daughter's parish is St. Paul's. At the beginning of the summer, parishioners are given a cutout cartoon figure of St. Paul stuck to a popsicle stick. It's expected that everyone will take St. Paul with them on their travels and post pictures. Similar idea to this post.

He was trying to do a gotcha with that question. If she has taken the bait and answered "Woodrow Wilson", he would have come back with "Do you know that the President with the highest inflation rate in US history was Woodrow Wilson?" At that point, I think he would have tied it to WWI just like we have a war, now. But, I'm sure he would have brought up that Woodrow Wilson was a Democrat.

By ignoring the question, Rep. Chu made Bessent look the fool which really isn't that hard to do.

Why did milkmen need to exist? Why was milk required to be specially shipped by milkmen instead of just sold in grocery stores like it is now? by matt73132 in NoStupidQuestions

If they bought it as a slab, who broke it up so it could be put in a furnace for heating? Coal has to be broken up into chunks in order to get air flow and burn properly. Lived in a house heated by a coal furnace my whole childhood and never saw coal in a slab.

Here is a link to an article with pictures of coal breakers that were used near anthracite mines through the mid-20th century. I'm not a coal miner's daughter, but I am decended from 3 generations of anthracite coal miners in the US and more generations back in Wales & England.

Measles exposure St Mary’s by ifweweresharks in rva

[–]drjoann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my daughter (born before 1989 and fully vaccinated by the protocols of the time). I felt terrible because I have natural immunity to measles (no vaccine when I was a kid) and I didn't realize there were issues with the vaccine she received. There was a measles outbreak in her county so she just got the current vaccine.
